I was a marshall for the BARC in 1969-72 and recall getting luncheon vouchers. Do marshalls still get them?

I have a story about another type of LV from a certain C Payne- someone might know who I'm talking about!

Ah dear Cynthia ;) (think about it!) ..... I lived in Streatham at the time and used to wear a T-shirt which I had purchased in the small Pembrokeshire village of Solva. As almost nobody in those parts of Sahf Lunnon had ever been much further west than Heathrow I used to tell them it was the official shirt of the Sex On Luncheon Vouchers Association! :p

I've been Marshalling since 1980 and we've been "Subsidised" in many ways over the years. We do get Vouchers or a Fiver sometimes but I've never heard of Cynthia..er I mean "C Payne" before.

Wonder what I would have got for a Fiver....... ;)

On the question of marshalls. Where do the marshalls in places like Bahrein and Singapore that have no racing tradition come from? Do the organisers train them or import them?

As for Madame Payne. Did she write a book or am I thinking of someone else in the same line of work?

Yes, they do. At an event at Mission, B.C., last weekend, marshalls were giving race control their orders before lunch.

For many years now the marshals in Scotland at Ingliston and Knockhill had pies, sausage rolls etc for lunch thanks to Walter Robertson who was in the cooked meats business and as far as I am aware it is still the case. Walter was perhaps best known for racing the Mick Hill Volkswagen special but was later kicked upstairs and is now a Stewart and Clerk of the Course.

Regarding other countries, when I was in Hong Kong the majority of the marshalling team for the Macau Grand Prix were British enthusiasts who worked in Hong Kong and were imported for the event. The same was true for the occasional race held at Pataia in Thailand. I remember this circuit because of the shrine to Prince Bira as you entered the circuit.

The LV given to me by Cynthia was more of a signed souvenir when I went to value one of her friends properties when I worked as an Estate Agent in Croydon in the mid 1980's. By sheer co-incidence I'd bought her paperback 'An English Madam' at a market just weeks beforehand and naturally she autographed that aswell.

There was a pic and some story about the redoubtable Mrs Payne a few months ago on the 'Famous Registrations' thread.

At the Liverpool Motor Club events we put on a buffet lunch for the marshals as well as providing them with an 'out of pocket expenses payment'.

I know that a lot of other clubs organising hillclimbs and sprints do the same thing as without the stalwarts on the banks our branch of motor sport would never take place.

I get paid in Luncheon Vouchers for doing surveys online (as does my Mother). I think we're the only people to use them in our local supermarket and usually have to tell the till operators how to enter them!
