The Gordon-Bennett Cup Conditions (that appear as an Appendix to Gerald Rose's Record of 1894-1908) mention that the races were to be governed by the 'Racing Rules of the Automobile Club of France...which relate to Road Racing'.

Does anyone know if a copy of these Racing Rules has survived?

Rose also mentions that a 115-page regulations booklet was produced for the 1898 Paris-Amsterdam-Paris. Are any of these still in existence?

It would be great to know more about the specific rules and regulations that governed the early races.

I have not seen the complete ACF racing rules from this period, but Krausz's ABC of Motoring (Chicago: Laird & Lee, 1906) has what may the earliest complete sets of the "Racing Rules of the American Automobile Association," the "Gordon Bennett Cup Rules" and the "Vanderbilt Cup Rules."

Alas, the Contest Rules and race regulations from the first several decades of automobile racing are scare to essentially non-existent. Indeed, it does not get much better until very recent times, this being an area generally ignored by Nostalgists, Historians, and Scholars alike it seems. They are out there in some cases, the problem just being finding them and making them available to others.

Contact me and I can send you a pdf with the Krausz information.
