Virgin Racing is the new Red Bull!

Cool status, Cosworth, Full CFD design, established sponsors, smallest budget of the grid, four drivers, Wirth, Booth, leather jackets... but how about their line up?

Has Glock something to prove?
Will Di Grassi "click" in F1?

What do you guys think of it?

Good choice. Glock`s level is higher than Virgin and Di Grassi is one of the best renta-drivers at the market. But I think, that Virgin is not the best sponsor, cause it may leave the team after some dissapointedyears.

I'd expect Glock to have a small edge because of his experience and they're the best available for the budget. If Di Grassi adapts to F1 as well as he should, Parente and Razia won't have a chance, barring accident or illness. But I hope Parente at least can find a seat somewhere. Maybe Razia, too? I know less about him.

Smallest Budgets puts them by far in a different league from Red Bull, don't you think?

I think Glock will have the edge, though!

Wikipedia on Razia.

Edit:

But I think, that Virgin is not the best sponsor, cause it may leave the team after some dissapointedyears.

And their involvement is actually quite cheap. It's good that they have other sponsors behind them.

It's a good line-up. Glock is a GP2 champion, and wasn't that far from Trulli (who is quite a good driver in my opinion). Di Grassi has at least lots of experience from GP2. Last season wasn't good, but we must remember he was the best GP2 driver in 2008 (highest average points per weekends competed). So Virgin-Cosworth will have a nice pairing in 2010, albeit slightly worse than that of Lotus's. As if that matters, though. Their 100%-CFD-planned car will be there to compete with USF1 for 23rd-26th...

Glock, by small advantage as he has experience.
At the end of season they will be on par.

Di Grassi is not for me F1 standard, he has made a bit of a dogs dinner of GP2 and will be out of his depth in F1

Surprissed Di Grassi got the drive but did drive well in GP2 a few years ago when he came second in the championship after missing half the season. Still think Davidson or Kobayashi should of got the drive though.

I am glad Di Grassi has been given a chance and will give Timo a run for his money.

I think Glock will be faster, probably by a good margin at the beginning, but I think di Grassi can be quite close to him in some time, as for Parente and Razia... Well, I think this team will keep unchanged for the next 2 seasons, but maybe if di Grassi is worse than expected... but I believe that this was quite a good choice, di Grassi looked strong in 2008 and overall in his carrear he looks like a decent driver...

Some miscellaneous about DiGraxa...

> Lucas belongs to some kind of closed society of genious people, with QI above average [20 pts? above].
> Di Montezemolo, Di Resta, Di Grassi... the prefix "Di" in Italian means that he comes from a noble family.

When will people stop thinking that performances in GP2 correlate 100% to performances in F1?

As for making a dog's dinner of GP2, he would have won the title in 2008 had he not missed a third of the season.

Mark my words:
The rookie DiGrassi will beat the experienced Glock.

Lucas always had bad luck in GP2, every time he signed with a supposed good team, in that year the team turned to be average. Lucas always trashed his team mates. Petrov was a non-entity compared to Lucas but did pretty well alongside the farse Grosjean.

That's something that wouldn't surprise me at all.

Glock was never that consistant, I have a sneakly little feeling that Di Grassi could shade him.

he's had enough time in an F1 car. Its not new to him so I think he will feel pretty confortable right away. Got to say though, another great driver lineup. We have so far been blessed by no pay-drivers for a large field!

Did the team *turn* average, or did Di Grassi just not perform as well as he did in other teams? That happens in GP2 all the time.

Some of you seem to assume that a driver's performance stays the same every single race, and from year-to-year.

And, in Argentina, are the Di Palma one of the most notable racing dinasties of touring car series (despite dinasty founder Rubén Luis Di Palma was good in national F1 and his son José Luis was British F2 champion in 1994).

But well, back to topic, it's expected that Glock will do the best things for the team, but I have a lot of expectations about Di Grassi. He really deserves to be into F1 after seeing him in GP2, despite not being champion.

One thing's for sure is that Di Grassi will beat Glock in qualifying at least. Whether Glock will have the race pace to beat Di Grassi in the race is to be seen...

I suppose the teams turned average because di Grassi kept doing a good job compared to his team mates.

Also, for those who don't know, di Grassi already won F3 in Macau in a very interesting battle with Kubica. The pole was faster but di Grassi did a great job holding him behind, go on youtube to see what I'm talking about.

Again, you're assuming that drivers do equally well in every single race of every single season they perform. Surely, if you've payed any attention to GP2(and other lower series) at all, you'd see there is no accurate way to rank the drivers against each other. Certain drivers just do better/worse in certain teams. Its probably as much to do with the quality of the team and their race engineers as it is how the driver performs and *clicks* with their race engineers.

Things just aren't as black and white as you think they are. And its not the first time you've tried to come to 'certain conclusions' based off of simplistic assumptions.

As for winning the Macau GP, it doesn't mean everything. There's plenty of simply 'ok' drivers who've won the race.

Seanspeed, what you say is correct, but there is no way I can know about those stuff. What I'm doing here is kind of guessing things based on what I can know and of course it is simplistic, it just can't be otherwise.

Glock is going to work hard for his money next year - I expect him to outshine Di Grassi, but then you'd normally expect that with a rookie, right?

I´m very, very happy to finally see di Grassi in F1 the comming season. He is a very talented driver, and I think he is going to surprise everybody,
if that Wirth can build him a competetive car ! I think di Grassi is going to be better than Glock .
di Grassi have beaten Shumi in karting, so why not in F1...even if it´s not the same kind of racing. Forza di Grassi !!!!

Interesting poll.

I think di Grassi is one of those guy who could blossom in F1, despite not winning enough in GP2.

He's a good option given that he brings lots of cash.

For that reason I don't see the team getting rid of him this year or next, provided he does a good job.

Glock is ahead when we check the points standings at the end of the year IMO. I like di Grassi he's going to have a good career in F1 if everything goes well. Great to see them as teammates in F1 after their battle in GP2 in 2007!

You're not guessing, though. You're saying you are *certain* of things. There's a massive difference there.

I've just realized that its very hard to tell how good somebody is going to be in F1 judging solely by their pre-F1 careers. I'm very hesitant to say anything other than, "He's got x amount of potential", ya know? Unfortunately, that potential is not always realized, and there's no sure-fire way to know which drivers will or wont acheive expectations.

Di Grassi could be good(Rosberg). He could be very good(Hamilton). Or he could be mediocre(Kovalainen). Or he could be a disaster(Piquet).

I've no problems with guesses as long as you realize that you could very well be wrong, perhaps completely wrong. Anything more than that, and I think you're just being a little too sure-footed for your own good.

And they are off...

Heard on an interview with Luck DisGrace today at Radio JovenPan.
The [serious] reporter mentioned that G_Luck said an statement that he considers himself the first driver of Manor, bcs he is more experienced. [quote needed, please]

Lucas replied that there is no such clause in his contract or outsponken politics at Manor and that ultimatelly this kind of though from Glock is good to him, bcs it will probably make Glock work less.
Also, Lucas mentioned his past with the team full of victories, like the F3 Macau GP.

Wirths been really cocky especially with him jerking off CFD every chance he gets. That's probably the one thing I'm most interested in about 2010, at least for the new teams, is how well will Virgin's 100% CFD designed car go.

Glock, by small advantage as he has experience.
At the end of season di Grassi will dominate.

Don´t undestimate di Grassi. They guy is very good (and a really nice bloke too).
