i believe the cars were correct in a very pale yellow and am trying to confirm the actual color

i took a look at '67 chevy corvette colors - the yellow they had listed (sunrise yellow) looks very very close

"Godawful Yellow" is a 66-67 Corvette color "Sun Fire Yellow" - paint code should be CETA S4U/WA9929 which can be bought in scale model paint sizes from Model Car World as their code MCW 6600 - info came from an interview with Bill Neale in the Shelby Auto Club newsletter of July 2005

Allan Moffat is/ was Canadian though was racing in Australia before 1970 but also racing regularly still in Nth America.
He has just been 'promoted' as an ambassador for Ford here in Oz

Robert Barg's One That Got Away

I purchsed this car from NW racer Mark Johnson in the early nineties - was
in very rough shape and rusty - went down to see Joe Chamberlain and he
authenticated the car as his 2nd Camaro. Decided I couldn't afford to restore it and sold it
to a Dr. in Palm Springs who had it restored. - The Camaro was later sold at the Monterey
auction - it's currently running with the CA historic T/A group.

Meadowdale Raceway was built in 1958 north of Carpentersville, Illinois, to attract development to the suburbs of Chicago. It is located at the intersection of Illinois Route 31 and Huntley Road. A world renowned road racing course during the 1950s and '60s; it was 3.27 miles long and its steeply banked 180 degree Monza Wall led onto a 4,000 foot roller coaster straight. It was also home to a Trans-Am race in 1968.

From what Mike says, his racing photos range from 1968-1985 and "include front-runners as well as back-markers. He didnt attend any of the races that my car was at, thus didnt have any images of my car...but he did have an image of my friends F5000 car which made me smile and made recreating the paint scheme so much easier. So if you are looking for that all illusive image, I would definitely check his site out.

As has been mentioned earlier, the names are Penske and Donohue. Regarding the above images being lifted from another site, are you sure they are not copyrighted and are available to be lifted and reposted elsewhere?

Unfortunately, I decided to go back to school and the GI Bill wasn't enough to cover it, so I sold off lots of stuff including my Pentax and my Elan . My photos don't pick up again until the IMSA GTP days.

For some reason, it won't let me quote, but this is in reply to carpenterdesign's above message.

Does anybody know what year the SCCA allowed the Trans-Am cars to have plexiglass (polycarbonate lexan) windows?

According to what I have found, 1966 rules required that the car retain their stock steel hood (without a scoop), the original glass windows, and full interior upholstery including dash padding and door panels. But, I have read that the rules loosened quite a bit over the next few years.

Does anyone have a copy of the rules per 1966, 1967, 1968-1972?

Your help would be much appreciated.

I believe the Group 2 rules were published in Sportscar Graphic in early 66. I will take a look. The GTA had plexiglass side and rear windows and a special lightweight front windscreen.

Trans-Am was running to FIA group 1 and 2 rules during 1966-1969 (there might have been the odd exception though, but don't know). For 1970 rules were tailored for Trans-Am. Don't know were any of this leaves plexi glass windows, but the above might be of help to tell the whens, wheres and whys.

Trans-Am rules through 1972 were based off of SCCA A Sedan rules which were created in the pre-T-A days when compact sedan racing became popular and a experimental class was created to see if it would fly.

They were always some-what based on FIA rules but were unique to the SCCA.
When a factory '69 Mustang was used in the Brit. series it had to un-modified to fit the Brit rules. (If I remember correctly the roll-cage that tied the car together had to be mostly removed.)

They were always quite strict , even when the highly mod. type cars ran in the late seventies, if you were not within the boundaries, as they saw them, you did not run.

These are some more T/A photos from the 71 Edmonton race taken by a friend of mine Rolf Greiff (transf'd from slides). In hindsight our gang should have made the long distance trip there - only 14 cars and we probably would have finished in the top ten and paid most of our expenses. I think the time factor to get there and back nixed it for us.

Yesterday, while scanning a few of images I had the chance to talk to Ade Ketchum, award winning and internationally published professional photographer, best known for our purposes as Watkins Glen Track photographer from 1970-2006 and owner of MOTORACE GRAPHIKS. He is an avid collector of anything to do with Watkins Glen and has a collection of race photos that would make all of us drool. John Buffum used both in Trans Am the TC in 1971 and the RS1600 '72 &'73 more details on this racingsportscar.com page.

Memory tells me that Ford Escorts were not sold in either Canada or the US. The few that showed up in the under 2 or 2.5 races were likely imported from the UK.

The following drivers were listed as Escort drivers in a few T/A races - John Buffum, Rob Tanner, Tom Lynch, Ron Shantz, and Ray Gage.
Escorts raced at Bryar, Lime Rock, Le Circuit, Watkins Glen, and Mid Ohio.

They were out-paced by Alfa, BMW, and Datsun. Best showing was Buffum with a 3rd at Bryar. Perhaps with some factory support and strength in numbers they would have been front runners.

At the July 6, 1969 Trans-Am race at Donnybrooke (Brainerd, MN), there was a wreck involving George Follmer's Bud Moore Mustang and Larry Bock's '68 Camaro, apparently due to them trying to avoid the spinning '69 Camaro of Lloyd Ruby. Follmer's and Bock's cars had extensive damage. I believe Parnelli's Mustang caved in the passenger side of the Camaro but he kept on going and ended up winning the race. Does anybody have pictures that they could post that shows the damage to the two cars? I've seen a video showing it but would like to see some decent quality stills, if they are out there. Bock's Camaro is #11, primarily white with a black hood and red accents. Thanks for any help.

Mid-Ohio 1969

A photo forwarded to me by Mr. Robert Barg by way of a fellow enthusiast calling himself Gerrybear. 1970 race at Road America. I could be wrong, but it looks to me like the cars are coming through Kettle Bottoms into Canada Corner. RA historian do you have any light you can shed on this picture?

You have it right. Pace lap, 1970 RA Trans Am. Cars entering turn 12, AKA Canada Corner as they exit Kettle Bottoms. Two Bud Moore Mustangs on front row, a Chaparral Camaro, Swede Savage Plymouth, Sam Posey Dodge, Mark Donohue Javelin, etc.

I have been informed that Follmer was "taken out" by Leslie at the first turn and that Parnelli was also involved. Donohue won the race.

From the book, Road America, Five Decades of Racing at Elkhart Lake , :

"The two works Mustangs of Follmer and Jones headed he grid, Follmer turning the pole lap at 2:31.0. Leslie and Savage were on row two, followed by Hall and Revson. At the first turn, Jones, Follmer, and Leslie came together, disputing the turf, with the resulting damage eliminating Follmer and Leslie. Jones kept going in the lead, while Savage pitted to repair some minor damage. Posey and Donohue followed Jones." And so forth.

Donohue won the race, using a typical Penske strategic move, pitting out of sequence in order to have an open track with the ability to lap faster. Savage finished second, followed by Posey, Jim Hall, Jones, and Milt Minter.

Perhaps that series of images was mixed up and mislabeled? The R. Petty #14 Barracuda seen in the second picture I believe is from the Marlboro 1966 TA race.

These pictures are interesting. I am not sure if they are from the May 30th Trans-Am race held at Lime Rock or from a regional event held the same month. They are labeled "May 1967 Lime Rock, Connecticut."

Also, are you able to obtain photos from the '67 Marlboro race which shows the pony cars? They ran the under 2-liter cars on Saturday and the bigger cars on Sunday. I had a car in the over-2-liter race on Sunday.

Thanks for letting me know. I don't have a copy of the grid for the 1967 Lime Rock Trans-Am but the results show nobody named Cunningham with a Volvo in it. Also, in my entry list for the race, a previous owner of the program crossed out the name C.W. Cunningham and put DNS next to it. The other cars in your photos are...

Hi Ken, Just posted the Alfa related images to the alfabb.com blog. Hope you all enjoy! I thumbed through the album again and sadly these were the only images that had anything related to the TA series.

Hi all, I checked out that SCCA site and make 2 notes. The result posted for Marlboro 1966 is not correct in that the second page is actually the results second page for Green Valley. The correct result for Marlboro was published in SCCA Sports Car magazine. Also they do not post the result for the 1971 Laguna Seca race. I have sent SCCA an E-mail re these to items.

I have copies of both of these correct results as well the 1966 result for Green Valley in the 8.5 x 17 format , same as other 1966 results.

BTW Clay, thanks for posting that info on the other BB.
