ESPN's Driver of the Decade

Good poll. Only one NASCAR driver in there (Hornish is there but not for his performance in NASCAR). Looks like it's pretty much one driver from each discipline. I guess the Schumacher mystique is prevailing.
For the record I have Rossi first. Total domination of a very competitive series.
Note if it were "Driver of the period from 1994 to 2004" then Schumacher would win hands down.

Easily the top-3
M. Schumacher
Rossi
Loeb
Unquestionably the three greatest racing drivers in the world. They could be ranked in any order; I had it in this one.
Next 3:
Kristensen
Schneider
Johnson
Three guys who have been dominant in competitive series. Johnson gets the last spot in this group because his dominance of NASCAR is mainly due to his crew chief (Knaus), as there are surely more talented drivers than him.
Next 2:
Bourdais
Hornish
These two dominated AOW, but have thus far gotten creamed in superior series against superior competition.
Last:
T. Schumacher
Sorry, but drag racing requires next to no talent.

Bernd Schneider? Was someone really desperate to fill the last spot on the board, or something?
Wasn't he a German International footy player

A poll that asks you to rank various racing series according to your personal preference would be identical to whatever each individual submitted here.
The overall poll results depend on the makeup of ESPN's on-line audience. Wild guess - "Hee-haw!"

Sorry, but drag racing requires next to no talent.
Some say that about NASCAR as well. Of course it requires talent. If you are going to do it well.
My top three is
1. Rossi
2. Loeb
(These two are uncontested)
3. Schumi
I guess Jimmy Johnson is fourth, but rest I can not rank.
Rossi and Loeb has been outstanding.

2.Michael Schumacher (contractual #1)
3.Jimmie Johnson (still think MS is better)
4.Sebastien Loeb (Who seriously could compete with his car?)
5.Tom Kristensen (Great car, but victories are shared with other drivers)

Because some people seem to think drag racing is literally consists of pushing a gas pedal down and nothing else, probablyWhy not?

But it's not. There is keeping the car/bike in a straight line, launching at the precise moment, having the physical capability of coping with the speeds and g-forces of the vehicle and risking your life as you only have one lane and little runoff.Because some people seem to think drag racing is literally consists of pushing a gas pedal down and nothing else, probably

5. Lewis Hamilton
4. Sebastien Loeb
3. Michael Schumacher
2. Valentino Rossi

Ricky Carmichael. Given the extensive (well, existent) Motocross coverage Speed has, I'm surprised he wasn't nominated. Especially considering how he's one of the greatest athletes of the decade, full stop.

Surprising indeed. Since it´s a poll by US site, you´d expect 5 guys from NASCAR, one from Trucks, one from ARCA, two good ol´ boys from local dirt tracks...and maybe Schumi, on last place.

Not the same, IMO. He was trying to get past, rather than illegally impeding a much faster competitor. This is about on a level with Emmo and Al Unser, jr at the Indy 500, or more or less any move made by Danny Sullivan. Or maybe Freddie Spencer vs. Kenny Roberts at Anderstorp in 1983, not that probably anyone on this board has actually seen that incident...
It was no Biaggi elbow, that's for certain...

Didn't Scott Dixon eclipse Hornish's win record last year? And in less starts? Oh well Dixie is probably penalised by being spread across CART and IRL as well as not being flamboyant out of the car.
Can't see a lot of point in trying to rank apples v bananas v oranges v melons!!! Like trying to compare Fangio and Senna on another axis.

Agreed.
For those who don't know Ricky one year won every single race of the series, thats 22 races folks in a row in first place in one of the worlds most competitive series, American outdoor motocross.
You're not only racing others but the track and conditions as well and that feat was just incredible putting aside his other incredible history/results.
