I may be getting horribly confused here, but I thought the actual car on ice event in Canada was cancelled? Or is this picture of something else entirely different which just happens to be on ice as well?

The event was supposed to comprise:
Runs on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve - Took place as planned.
Runs on the Olympic Bassin articifical lake - Cancelled due to lack of ice.
Instead they shiped the whole package around 1000km North to Clearwater Lake (Lac à l'eau claire).
The result is this very good commercial presentation video celebrating F1 return to Montreal in 2010.
Make sure you also check the B-Roll video (making of). Note in that video, sound works only for interviews
Trivia: Nick Heidfeld, BMW Sauber drove on Ice in Saint Moritz in late 2007. Video.

You sure it was two events?
Toro Rosso driver Sebastien Buemi will drive one of their F1 cars on a specially-constructed ice circuit by the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
The event will take place at the Olympic Basin at the Parc Jean-Drapeau on Sunday 17th January 17 at 1pm local time.

Yes I'm sure.
Watch the B Roll video. And read the first three slides at the beginning of the B Roll video.
It's explained there: Separate action on Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and Lac à l'Eau Claire, QC.

Thanks for pointing that out. The event was rescheduled to January 20 instead of the original date of January 17.
