I missed that one last season, I guess. Can you let me in the joke???

Someone posted a pic of the new Mc with a green border on one of the sidepods. I didn't get the joke. Then I read Puffet's interview and it ends:

Q. So no green paint tomorrow?

GP: You never know.

What is all this about?

Thank you for your answers.

It's not really a joke. McLaren used a green oil-based paint on their cars that would be pushed around as the car drove at speed. It was designed to create a visual representation of where air flowing around the car would go.

If I understood it correctly last year, the green paint is some kind of aerodynamic tracer to help materializing the airflow around the car.

I see what joke you're speaking about, but I didn't get it either.

edit : this joke, 2 posts above.

Yeah they used it a lot last year and it became a major sign that they had lost understanding of how their aero was working. The joke is that seeing them do it this year must be an ominous sign.

why just because you think so?
whos to say they are not just checking that their aero work is correct, or perhaps they have not had time to windtunnel the part.
many many reasons why they could be doing it and most are nothing to be worried about.
lets wait and see what the car is like over the next two days when it finaly has a real driver in it.
To me i dont care how much flow-vis they use if the car is going well thats all that matters.

Thanks. I know you cant read anything into this yet. My heart couldnt cope with another doggie car. But it would be interesting to see Button in a not so good car (not being nasty) but like he has been used to before Brawn, racing against Hamilton in the same car. See who can get the best out of it. Would Button beat Hamilton in a dog?! Heh, I guess whatever happens it will be good watching Mclaren.

i lay it out for you nicely

for many years mclaren have used a paint which moves across the car to show where the air flows.

the joke is that last year it was 1 of many indications that they were struggling to understand why the car wasnt reacting how the simulations showed. therefore seeing it again this year is meant to be a bad sign, even though we used it in 2007 and 2008 which were title capable cars.

the basic idea of the green paint is just mclarens way of being meticulous in its detail to operations when testing cars. its not an ominous sign in any way as its been used many years.

people have to lighten up, myself included dont like seeing people trying to wind us mclaren fans up but at the end of the day i have belief in my teams ability to win until Qualy in Bahrain. so doesnt really bother me what these people say, when i first saw the image above i facepalmed for a 2nd when my gut had an instinctive flashback to last year, but thats it. anybody with a little sense knows to take anything right now with a pinch of salt.

because apparantly Renault and Williams cars looking impressive but today were nowhere with there top drivers... so if gary paffet is that bad, i have no idea what state renault and williams are in :)

The picture that dsfgdshg posted originates from a meme from the 4chan message and image board.
Seeing he is combining that and the world of F1 makes it an epic massive win for a geek like me  :p

Just to add that the worse things got during testing the more the green paint appeared on the car, even being used over race weekends. It was an indication that all was not well, although some were in complete denial and insisted that Mac were sandbagging.

Flow visualization: http://en.wikipedia....w_visualization

Long blah blah...
http://ims.ivv.nasa....main_H-1481.pdf - report on the above F-18*
http://web.mit.edu/hml/ncfmf/05FV.pdf - description of the general ideas involved

*The F-18 results section describes the things Macca would be looking for I think... seperation, recirculation etc.

This is more sophisticated as the dye is fed out of a port, whilst the McLaren one is just painted on and it dries while the car is moving forming lines and dense (dye and therfore air moved towards one spot) and light regions (air moves away).

People under estimate the hilarity of internet forum humour. It's a whole new comedy genre and it can be superb.

When things started getting better, they used blue paint. Maybe they had exhausted the stock of green, or maybe there were too many traces of green in odd places around the car to confuse the issue!

If the paint goes where the computer predicts, the team are happy. If people look at the paint, turn pale and scratch their heads then don't expect too much at the start of the season!

Love the idea of Renault using black ...

They can build a virtual model of the paint and put it into their CFD, all very complicated!

Seems smooth enough on the endplate, that's a very large amount of paint...
