Classic sidecar racing

Little sequence here from Lydden Hill 2008 of a near miss, the #16 outfit braked early for the next corner & the #48 outfit had to swerve to avoid running into the back of him, driver almost losing his balance. No harm done & he rejoined the track.

Don't really know Larry? they are from Kent so was my Father & Grandfather so possible as not a very common name, especially 50/60 years a go.
I have not done any family tree research type thing, I will have to speak to them next year if they are still racing?

Yes your right about the passenger being Alan Bedford, he is not listed in programme from Lydden, he normally chaired for Brian Gray, could it be him?

in most progs the passenger is a certain TBA , is he/she related to A.N Other , I wonder ??

Mr Bedford here with Brian Gray who is losing the sole of his shoe which looks like its made from plastic padding/fibre glass!

It's pretty obscure.

In the early 70's Bill Hodgkins along with Laurie Hodson and brothers Mick and Richard Attenborough (there might have been another one but I can't remember) formed a team called Invicta Racing. Their bikes were yellow and red and they managed to get small amounts of sponsorship from businesses local to where they were from, one of which was a bakery. There were stickers on the bikes and on vans pronouncing "Race Ahead With Farmcrust Bread." Seeing that photo of Bill Hodgkins reminded me of it.

Easter Monday 1974 or 5 Snetterton National.

My TD2B managed to break its' crank during practice so I was at a loose end for the day.

Lionel Horsnall (BSA) had managed to turn his outfit over at Bottom Bend (I believe) at Brands on the Saturday and his passenger was not in fit state to lay on the platform, drinking champers and eating grapes (as was my impression of passengering ).

I volunteered to stand in for the recently hospitalised regular. Practice was over by this time but we were allowed one lap prior to racing starting, not even flying lap at that.

The first race was eventful as Lyn appeared intent on making up for lost ground on the straights (despite the BSA engine being out at 860cc) by attempting to overtake by going straight over the opposition as this was the shortest line. We nearly looped at the Russell chicane (old Russells’) when I was a tad tardy shifting from left to right and the rear wheel lifted. We finished in the top ten, much to my relief (finishing at all).

In the second race we were further up the field, however as I wore glasses at the time I was lifting my visor along the Revett straight to push the lenses back against my eyes, when on about the third or fourth lap whist both hands were otherwise engaged replacing lenses I started to slide of the platform. I managed to get a grip back on only to find myself dowsed in hot oil as we ground to halt on the grass, to discover the cylinder barrels had parted company with the crankcases (not an unknown phenomenon with Jumbo BSA engines).

After two races I was shattered as despite being quite fit I was unused to all the upper body punishment.

Luckily Lyn usual ‘passenger’ was fit for the next meeting and my career as a passenger was over.

Very similar experience to my own Tony.As press-ganged monkey on Dave Stones huge Fiddaman Norton (950 or thereabouts).Going over Paddock gives the same feeling that Lemmings must have

That seems to very quick, and not quite period correct though!! A great ride around Winton.
Look at one of the associated videos on You Tube with this of the ex Len Bowes s/c Vincent speedway outfit at Broadford. Somewhere there is a video of 2 of them running together.

I may be sturring up a hornets nest, but when someone say to me classic sidecars, i have in my mind machines from the likes of Eric Oliver to Helmut Fath etc. All i seem to see is three wheeled cars dated from the early 70's with mid 70's to early 80's fairings and brakes ets. For me this is so wrong, 19'' and 19'' wheels with the odd small chair wheels throwen in. Why are so many classic outfits period 3-30001a etc? Nothing against the riders/passengers but give me a Rennsport or Manx GP outfit drifting with smoking rear tyres anyday. Oh and before anyone blasts at me, i do have one of the first all mini-wheeled outfits ever built in 1966. Its nice but......you know.....

Inclined to agree with that Kevin but I did not take photo's then unfortunately.

However, I have painted a few pics of the stuff that is really classic sidecars, and have supplied individual paintings to a lot of the greats. Recently, came up with this from a little montage of some of my paintings of those great stars..

Here's one for you, Dommie. Gordon Skilton/Ray Larsen (750 Norton Atlas) lead Shorty de Malmanche/Gary Binyon (650 Triumph T110, "El Tigre") at Porirua 1969.
Gordon Skilton has still been turning out on his chair at NZ classic events until a major back operation a couple of years back, and the El Tigre outfit has never stopped racing through a variety of permutations, and is still active in the hands of Bruce Williamson. Pic from the Wellington newspaper...
