Spanish commentators.

Some of us were really worried that with the "loss" of Pedro as commentator for the Spanish TV, Lobato would be left alone saying what he feels like on TV without nobody holding him down when he gets too much... "emotioned" (just to say it without offense). He would probably bash anysingle driver with the exception of those from Hispania Racing, Alonso, Jaime and Pedro of course...
But today I went to laSexta homepage and to my surprise and happyness, Gene and Carlos Sainz will be also commenting the races!
News are from Yesterday but I didn't know about it. So what do you guys think about it?

Marc Gené Two years ago I could heard him working with Sky (italia) and he did a good job (IMO), he works inside Ferrari so he can give some good info.
Carlos Sainz: He deserves respect, but lets wait.

I have to admit i like reading his web page, there is good info there, but i really want to punch him in the face more than half of the times when he is commentating the races .This thread is mainly focused to the Spanish fans...

Still, whoever they bring in is going to be a thousand times better than that useless know-it-all piece of dung that Gonzalo Serrano was. God, it makes me cringe whenever I remember those too (Lobato and him) commentating.

OT. Magnificent the advertisements of La Sexta about the new season, with the F1 cars in the middle of the street, stopped at the red lights... Amazing.

Gené will provide really good insight. I do hope that he will be slightly less diplomatic than PDLR, thus putting his foot in Lobato´s mouth from time to time. Sainz, well, I don´t know, I never rated him as a words-wizard, and I don´t know how knowledgeable he is in F1. However, I will more than gladly give him the benefit of doubt.

Do you guys have alternative commentary options, like we have in the UK via the Red Button? You should try listening to Leggard for a race. With quotes like"He's in the pound seats"

Between lobato and commercials i die a little every race
And yes i will take a hit at lobato everytime i can, i wont hide the fact that i dislike him as commentator

You can expect some favouritism here or there if nationality is involved or even if they are just a fan of somebody. The MotoGP commentators love Rossi but he's not British. A commentator's primary role though is to convey what is happening on track to the viewer at home. The viewer might not see every news story, read every forum, they might not watch every race and it's the commentators job to keep the viewer informed so they can see what is really happening on track in context. What they shouldn't do is try to persuade the viewer to think one way or the other. A bit of enthusiam for the home guy is one thing, but it should try to be honest and the viewer should be left to make up their own minds. Speed TV and ITV accomplish that IMO, even if they are some cringe or corny moments. The NASCAR and MotoGP guys do a good job too. Yes there are some "yehaaaarr gosh darn it" moments in NASCAR but it's NASCAR, that's what you expect.

And TV3, catalan television, is not such an improvement over La Sexta. Yeah, there are no commercials, but Josep Lluis Merlos has been branded by a my friends as "Il Divo" 'cause he seems to think that HE is the star in the show rather than the guys driving at the racetrack.
It's a bit depressing to watch F1 in Spain... too many moments when you have to control yourself to not throw the remote control at the TV in anger
PS: Victor Seara signed with Canal 9 and not TV3... it's pretty "funny" how things are done in Spain. There are FOUR different TV stations that will broadcast F1 this following season

It would just be a HUGE dream come true if La Sexta management just decided to to dump Lobato and put Javier Rubio in. That's a really good motosports commentator.

Sorry. My mistake. I'm from Granada and thought that only La Sexta and TV3 were broadcasting F1 this year.
Anyway, I'm not agree about big critizism agaisnt Lobato. He puts a lot of emotion to every race. I never heard someone before doing it that way. I remember Jesús Fraile in the TVE2 1999 onwards and he sounded like a priest giving a sermon in a chuch: "And now Driver X enters to the pitlane..." Not to mention comments such as this one about Ralf Schumacher. Schumacher was out of the race and putting his steering wheel out in the pit lane. Fraile said: "Schumacher is not only changing the tyres, but the steering wheel TOO...", and then... "No, it seems that he's out of the race".
In 2004, when Lobato started to comment the races, he was, of course, a new begginer, a rookie on TV comments, and he behaved as a rookie with a lot of mistakes. But since that, he learnt a lot in my opinion. For me, it's really boring the way TVE1 commentators broadcast, for example, Moto GP's. Only Ángel Nieto puts a great emotion on the comments. Lobato, in that point, is really brilliant. The way he was talking, for example, in Hungary 2006 with Pedro de la Rosa, or Bahrein, 2005, also with Pedro, were one of the best moments of the Spanish TV for ages.
And yeah, he's biased with Alonso. But not that much that ITV with Hamilton. I remember, I think it was Bahrein 2008, the ITV commentators saying "Alonso is breaktesting Hamilton, Alonso, the archenemy of Hamilton".
Anyway, I think it's normal for sport-commentators to put their bets on some driver. It would be really amazing, for example, watching a football match, let's say, England-Spain, and hearing the English commentators shouting all loud out, after a goal for Spain: "GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLL by Spain!!!!!!".
A lot of people think here that F1 is different from football. I think not. You're supporting someone. A different thing is to be a biased hooligan just supporting someone and critizising the rest of the grid, which I think it's not the case of Lobato.

During the race I don't care much about commentators. I just look at the lap times and what I hate the most is when they show something stupid on the screen while the action is somewhere else. I hate watching more and more advertising every year and I hate bad commentators when I can't watch the race live and I have to tape it which fortunately doesn't happen much. Unfortunately I love watching the race again quietly during the week and you realise how short the race can be once the advertising has been removed.
Was it 60%? TBH I think last year it was about 50%-50% and, with the new regulation on mass media, they can show even more advertising than race in 2010.too bad we only get to hear them during 60% of the race

BBC or ITV?Speed TV and ITV aren't that bad at the moment. People complain but people will complain about anything. For some reason when German, Dutch or Spanish fans etc complain about their commentators I believe them, but since I can't understand a word they say, it's all a guess.
Totally agree.PS: Victor Seara signed with Canal 9 and not TV3... it's pretty "funny" how things are done in Spain. There are FOUR different TV stations that will broadcast F1 this following season

I had both La Sexta and ITV channels at home. But, for some strange coincidence -or is it because of F1 TV regulations- when La Sexta starts showing commercials, ITV is doing just the same. So it's your choice to watch Spanish commercials or English commercials... And I hate to watch the race through the small window while the commercials when something is happening and you can't know what's happening exactly. And then, Lobato saying after the break: "Well, as you could see during the commercials, Sebastian Vettel is out of the race..." What the hell? How can I know Sebastian Vettel was out if I'm seeing a image whish is 4x6 cms in the window in my TV screen?
Commercials should be forbidden in F1 races.

Fraile, Frentzen mother's paella and the elastómeros (more here http://danicastillof...ess-fraile.html )
I don't agree with the Lobato critizism either, and the more I see other countries broadcasts, the more I disagree, lots of people complain for the sake of it.
There was a suggestion of Javier Rubio before, and while the guy is knowledgable, he's very boring, and anyway he isn't that better to justify the change. There has to be a mainstreem comentator for all kinds of audience, and that's Lobato. Say whatever you want, but he never unfairly critizes a driver. That was Gonzalo Serrano, I was glad to lose that one. If you want more technical details, you listen to what PDLR (or now Gene and Sainz) have to say. So I don't understand how can anyone say he gets angry or whatever watching a race.

i admit i dont watch the commentators of other countries, and he does get very involved in what he does, but it gets tiresome when everything, and i mean everything revolves around alonso for him, and he hardly ever admits a alonso error. thats the way i see it, and that is why(i will say it again ) i do not like him as a commentator.Sorry. And I stand by my words: Javier Rubio is miles better than Lobato. He's knowledgeable, doesn't show any bias and knows pretty well how to switch between explaining what's happening on the track and any other thing that may give people a better understanding of what's going on. The main difference with Lobato is that Mr Rubio doesn't scream or gets overexcited, 'cause he is pretty aware that he's broadcasting a race, not a football match.
Oh, and how could I forget? Mr Carlos Castella also kicks ass and makes Lobato look like an amateur.

Guess what, the Finns loved this: http://www.youtube.c...lFnipds#t=2m18s (and I would if I knew Finnish, and even if I don't). God forbids if Lobato makes something like that, because the complainers would be all over him.
As I said before, there are people who complain for the sake of it, and the more I see other broadcasts, the more I appreciate what I've got.
Javier Rubio is very good for Eurosport, but he would be totally unappropiate to lead the broadcasting of F1 in a national scale. The knowledge difference could be very big in 2004, but isn't now.

Nah... there's not so much choice as it may seem. The four stations are La Sexta (nationwide), TV3 (only in Catalonia), Canal 9 (only in Valencia) and the one they have in Asturias (no idea about its name) so, basically, you have two different options at most.

As we are discussing national comments, I would like to say that, in Portugal, I miss Domingos Piedade as a commentator and that I find José Miguel Barros knowledgeable but incredibly dull.
José Miguel Barros by now is clearly too old for the job. Takes way too long to respond to action. I tend to prefer sober commentators to over-the-top dicks like Lobato shouting all over the place, but even I find JMB incredibly dull like you say, which is another proof that he's not good enough anymore. I think he's still very valuable for studio interviews and analysis, but not live coverage.
Domingos I have only vague memories because I think he's been gone since I was a kid, but I think he was very blatantly biased towards Senna and anti-Prost, also very arrogant and talking up his achievements in the sport.
The one great commentator we have found in recent years has been, surprisingly, Tiago Monteiro! Too bad he has to drag around that Seat on the WTCC tracks, he seems to do more for motorsport in Portugal as a TV commentator (and as a team owner) than as a driver nowadays!

The first and fourth ones is Andrés Montes, mentioned earlier in the thread. He was (he died recently) famous because of his weird commentating.
The second one isn't Spanish though, and I don't know who is the third one as I don't like football.

Agree with you on Monteiro. His comments also show us that he hasn't got 'the killer instinct': he seems a thoroughly nice and good hearted fellow. But Barros was always like this! Informed and interesting but totally unemotional. It is true he is becoming worse: nowadays he tends to comment on technical issues even when there is action on the track (which is not often...), and seems to be always watching the computer (fastest laps and so on) and not the race.
Piedade alwats liked to show that he was friends with whoever was world champion. But he knew a lot about racing and even commented on driving tricks. I liked that, even if I found him a bit vain and pompous...
Glad to know you're all right after the floods ;)

Lobato might not be a great expert in F1, but you must give it to the man, at least he puts passion at it. And I like it.
Spa 2008 by Lobato
Well, he does love the sport. A bit too much, but I sympathise.

I can't say I'm a fan of the man but to his credit he has improved and is enthusiastic but I'm afraid I still find him intensely annoying far too often. Hence as with others I was a bit worried about the departure of Pedro whose commentary really was the only thing worth listening to in adding rather than intruding on the race. So hopes for Marc.Well, he does love the sport. A bit too much, but I sympathise.
I find La sexta a bit dumbed down, I think most Spanish guys have got the hang of it by now, certainly the ones I know but my main problem with the coverage is the mix of volume commentary and race levels, for me, the commentary is way too up or conversely the race itself is way too low they should have a better balance (personally I'd love a commentary off option!). The nascar coverage on telesport was even more extreme a lot of the time it'd be near silence! La sexta need to better appreciate the importance of the car noise to motorsport.

That was a nice commentary from Spa by Lobato but for me I'll always remember him for making a complete mess of the final lap of Brazil 2008. He and Serrano were too busy rejoicing that LH was going to lose the championship that they failed to notice a certain red and white car slithering around on dry tyres!
To be fair a lot of people didn't notice that overtaking, PDLR who was also there commentating didn't notice. He also said later "until Antonio said it, I thought Massa was WDC". I have that race recorded and in fact when he saw the Ferrari garage celebrating he was saying "No no no [they are wrong], HAMILTON is the world champion".

To be fair a lot of people didn't notice that overtaking, PDLR who was also there commentating didn't notice. He also said later "until Antonio said it, I thought Massa was WDC". I have that race recorded and in fact when he saw the Ferrari garage celebrating he was saying "No no no [they are wrong], HAMILTON is the world champion".
the BBC radio team had no idea either...
Brundle was one of the only guys who noticed

Lobato might not be a great expert in F1, but you must give it to the man, at least he puts passion at it. And I like it.
Spa 2008 by Lobato
Absolutely agree. He puts a lot of passion. That makes races worthy of watching them.

Now I'm confused, ITV don't show F1 and on the BBC there are no commercials...
(I could be missing the point completely)
Sorry. I meant Speed TV.
