Shows how the memory warps,i would have sworn the Control Tower opened around 1972/3.

Oran Park was my circuit, where i have spent the most time watching motorsport in my life. It's really so so sad to see that place go

Same here, favourite circuit once WF got the staggers and then closed.
I heard on a Sports Radio show(Sydney) that the Liberals were going to support the building of a permanent new Sydney track when they shut down Homebush.

I suspect you're right, but I don't have the time or energy to check right now.

While I can completely understand your proviso regarding the Farm, I don't understand why Amaroo didn't rank more highly.

The thought of a Government-funded permanent circuit could be a bit thin, I'd think... they can always claim they already did that at Eastern Creek!

Going back further, and not counting Bathurst, there was for a very short time four circuits within 80 miles of Sydney...

Things were very strong then.

Oran Park, Amaroo, Catalina and ..... ? Mt Druitt didn't overlap did it?
Whoops, just remembered the other joint - bikes didn't go there you see.

During one of the Tasman Series JB took his Car to Oran Park to make sure all was ok for the WF races, his quote was "If you set you car up for OP then it is also set up for WF"

Now make what you will of that statement remembering that this was prior to the GP extensions of OP.

I can't tell you how sad that makes me. I'm 35 so haven't had the experience of losing a circuit I truly loved like others on here have had, until now. And the fact they've named the streets after motor sport legends just makes it worse.

What you said. Phillistines. Only, I'm 50 and I remember Warwick Farm, Amaroo Park, Silverdale Hill, Calder, AIR, the old Surfers Paradise and the Leppington Motorkhana Ground.

'But it's only car racing'. Can you imagine this happening to a cricket or football field? Never mind - old argument.

AIR is still there, and is used for drag racing again. I have heard whispers that Rodney is trying to get the road circuit going again too. And Calder too. It is a lot of money on the books not earning any money. Though I think the Dome is buggered and not economical to repair

Bruce given another 17 years on your age to catch up to me there is also Catalina Park, 2 - Orange circuits, Nowra, Oxley, Fountaindale & Lithgow Hill Climbs plus the Castlereagh Sprints & a couple of years before my adult time Mt Druid, sorry if I have missed any but it is a very poor state of affairs as you rightly point out.

Warwick Farn, Catalina Park, Amaroo Park and Silverdale are worth spilling beer over...

The fact is, however, that Sydney is in serious need of another circuit or two.

Most or all of these places have been discussed on this forum; try a search.

But, to get you started, look at these locations;

Warwick Farm; -33.910373,150.945582

Catalina Park; -33.712583,150.303569

Amaroo Park; -33.651467,150.933995

Silverdale; -33.926751,150.633505

why did they close Amaroo? I know it was because of building houses there, but looking at the map there' hardly any houses, and there's plenty of empty space around there. Seems a bit unnecessary

The club that owned Amaroo needed the money due to their takeover of Eastern Creek and their betting on the wrong horse at Bathurst.
So the place went up for sale and was turned into semi rural property.

How fitting it is for "Catalina Park" to answer questions concerning other Race Tracks, please forgive my scene of humour. :rotfl:

Ha..but what were the odds of Albert Park ever staging racing again, now if we can only get the Horses & Housing away from the Farm.

With V8 Thupercars anything is possible. Though they may have lost a little of the original layout. But racing in carparks and suburban streets is their thing!!
The GP at Albert Pk has some vague resemblance to the 50s track. Though they do go the other way.
