Plus I would like to point to the link a few posts up on the Fittipaldi cars (http://members.atlas.../Fittipaldi.pdf). See what you think - I must admit to being a little embarrassed at the praise from Mike Argetsinger - many thanks indeed for the comments, but I don't think that it is quite so worthy.......

Firstly, and slightly off topic, I'm now writing a weekly motorsports column on http://www.thegaffer...rrengindex.html . Nothing spectacular, but I am free to write whatever I like! It's mostly contemporary, but nostalgia will be introduced at some point.

I have been toying with a couple of ideas. I've been thinking of creating two new sections for my website: one on the Land Speed Record, another on Racing Cars (from the year dot to present). However, rather than doing everything myself, I was looking at doing it more in the way of Georgano's "Beaulieu Encyclopedia of the Car", with myself as Editor and collator (although I will supply some material), and others as contributors. The contributions would include pictures, specs, stories etc. The Racing cars section would be more than a re-run of David Hodges A-Z books - I would want to cover all racing cars from all countries. Would anyone be interested by helping out and submitting copy which could be used?

Great idea. I'm scanning some photos. Unfortunately I have no time. Tonight I scanned all 1978 F.1 car drawings, issued by Autosprint just before Italy GP 1978.
I have already uploaded Merzario on Kauhsen + Merzario thread.
Do you think you are interested in?

Ciao,
Guido

Blimey - and I thought I was mad in trying to catalogue all the racing tracks in the world! You've been doing this for a while along with everything else and now this... I guess no-one can accuse you of lacking ambition Darren! ;-)

Or should that be stupidity?? I get to see that vague glimmer at the end of the tunnel where I am just coming towards the end of some project, and I then go and build another 100 mile extension. Still, gives me something to do next year for the 10th year anniversary of the website.

WSC Results
-----------
1965 - Monza 1000Km: Changed #52 details. M.H.Willie Cave should be Mick H. Cave, and it was entered by Radford Racing, not Weber Racing. Thanks to Neil Dangerfield (Cave's co-driver) for the info).

It doesn't look much when you post it above like this, but that take many hours to do, and much ear-bashing from my wife!!

Part 2

10th Anniversary Celebration!

It is the 10th anniversary of my website. I never ever thought it would take so much time, or go so far, or introduce me to so many interesting people. Thank you all.

Going back a few posts - I'm now almost in a position to get going with the LSR and Car projects. Guido has kindly already supplied some material - can anyone else help?

Thanks,

Darren

Darren, according race car data: I have a database of about 5000 racing cars from WWII to present, varying from very little details to complete entries with acceleration figures. It's been neglected the last few months (I'm running a website too  ).
The whole thing is in Filemaker Pro format, most entries have a picture of 440 * 230 pixels. Sources are included though not always reliable (think of HP figures in the turbo era).
Let us know what kind of formats you want to use and most of all what you are able to read. I'd be happy to bring in what I have.

I don't know the Filemaker Pro format - could you possibly send me an example so that I can try to see what I can do with it? I can manage most formats, as I have access to MS Word, Adobe Framemaker, plus other programs.

Filemakerpro is a good little package. Works well on the web. You can get a free trial of Filemakerpro 6 (here) so you can access Frank's data and experiment with exporting it to Excel. If you have a recent version of Excel or Access, you should be able to transfer the data using XML.

Frank - any chance I could have a copy of your database too?

Thanks for the hint Allen. I'll try and see if I can convert the data some other way first, as the free download is 57MB! That would take just a little bit of time on a 56Kb modem at home.

Darren, of course I can export the data to any kind of format - the only thing is that you lose the link to the pictures which is often necessary to point out which car we are taking about. Take a look at the PDF first and tell me what you think.

Darren,

What's the LSR page address? BTW, I have a table of speed records in various classes (class 1 - groups 1 to 10, class 7 - group 1, class 8 - groups 1 & 2), but... by January 1, 1976 only. If you need it, please let me know.

The class records will be in few days. The LSR page is great but... in my opinion, it worths adding km/h speeds column.

This is the latest update, although only about 90% complete for phase 1 (uploading 200 MB takes a long time over a 56k modem!) - I have updated the majority of Frank de Jong's car database. The plan is to upload the rest of the data, and then add in some more detail, plus more cars as they come along.

Darren is aware that the pictures are not mine but are scanned from various magazines. The database was originally never intended to be on the net at all; it was offered as a help for the original project. But from there it went a little bit further than expected.
Darren could reduce the size of the images and/or state the sources of the original pictures. But I'll leave that up to him.

I'm aware that most of the pictures come from previously copyrighted sources, but this brings up the entire old argument again. I'm planning to have acknowledgements as per usual, and I'm not making any money whatsoever from this process. There is no way I could afford to purchase the pictures for all of the subjects. It is offered in the same way that everything else on my site is offered. Hopefully along the way I can add in new material which hasn't been (or at least rarely) seen before (some of the info on MiG, and the Brazilian specials for instance)

1966 Daytona 24 Hrs - Changed Russ Beazley (finished 19th) from not having driven to having driven. His grandson (Martin Brown) supplied photo's taken by his parents at the event - they aren't conclusive, but he did drive at the event, if not in the race at least.
1981 Daytona 24 Hrs, Sebring 12 Hrs, Riverside 6 Hrs and Mosport 6 Hrs - the chassis number of Jamsal's Porsche was incorrect.... This information comes from the new car's owner and restorer, as follows: 'the car you are showing in the 1981 IMSA series results driven by "Jamsal" is not the 930 770 0958 car. You may have picked this up from John Starkey's book. John also knows this is an error as he has spoken directly to the person , Claude Haldi , who sold this car to Enrique Molins AKA "Jamsal" . The car is actually 930 670 0171 . I have a complete history of this car from its time in Europe 76-78 and it's time in North & Central America 1978-1986 .

That's because I have been completely inconsistent with myself and filed it under Scandinavia rather than Central and Eastern Europe as I did with the other Estonian tracks. Something to rectify for the next site update........

I was just wondering if these circuits were speedway tracks as the ones I have heard of in the Wairarapa were Solway Showgrounds in Masterton which was very popular post war I believe, Penlee Speedway which was near the end of Norfolk Road just south of Masterton and is the East Taratahi track at Hughes Line. More info here: http://wairarapa.co....y/speedway.html There is a Clareville Showgrounds which is just north of Carterton which may have been a racecourse in the past...was racing also held there?

These were mostly grass circuits, so would probably have been used for Speedway as well as other races (David McKinney will be able to better help out here....). Clareville was used - Clareville Racecourse was a grass circuit used 1930-1932, and in 1973.

Yes, most of these venues no-one's ever heard of were grasstrack courses
I didn't pass on any speedway venues, 'cos I don't know enough about that subject

1954 Mille Miglia - the codriver for Anselmo Maggiorelli was listed as "Righi", but should be Rivi Giuseppe, born in Casalgrande (Reggio Emilia) on the 17 April 1926, resident today in Grosseto, nr Florence. Thanks to Andrea Marchi for this info - Giuseppe was his maternal grandfather.
1970 Le Mans 24 Hrs - the Lenham P70 entry was actually entered by Societe Darnval, not Lenham himself (as per 1972, when the next version of the car was called a Taydec). Thanks to David Matthews of the MG Owners Club for pointing that out.
1976 Le Mans 24 Hrs - 16th placed Porsche was 930 670 0171, not 930 670 0175. Thanks to Mr Zannis, who received the following from Jurgen Barth:
"The car with Chassis no 930 670 0171 was sold to Georg Loos in Köln Germany, the colour been red. As i could remember Claud Haldi probably got the car from Loos after the it been running in Le Mans 1976 under Gelo Racing Starting No 57 with the Drivers Hezemans/Schenken and finshed 2 Place in Klass."

Just a detail - the correct map of the Woody Point circuit is thanks to Ray Bell, who wrote an excellent article on the event and interviewed surviving competitors.
