Silverstone - Where to stay?

I'm considering going to Silverstone this year but I've never been there and I don't know the area at all. If I go, I will be travelling from Dublin.

Where would be a good place to stay for the Grand Prix? I will be travelling by myself and I'm not interested in camping or hiring a car, so I'd need some sort of hotel or B&B and be able to get some sort of bus or public transport to the circuit. I'd be willing to stay at a place that was walking distance, however I suspect they're all full at this stage.

Any info much appreciated.

You've left it a bit late for locating a B&B or hotel anywhere remotely close to the circuit. And any you do will have massively inflated prices to reap the benefits of demand (even the Travelodges nearby ramp their prices up astronomically).

Probably best bet is to find somewhere in Milton Keynes or Northampton and see if there are any bus services available. Pretty sure there used to be few bus transfers from Milton Keynes with Megabus.

Last year on race day I stayed in London and took the train up to Northampton first thing in the morning. Then took the shuttle bus to Silverstone Village. It took a while but was surprisingly easy, not the nightmare I had heard it would be. If going for the full weekend, I would not recommend doing this every day but prefer to try to stay in Milton Keynes or Northampton, as previously suggested.

As someone new to F1 travelling, I am surprised to learn that it is already too late to book accommodation for Silverstone - does this also apply to Spa? I've checked every hotel in and around Spa and all say no availability. I'm only checking online though, have not placed any phone calls. Am I naive to think that I could still get accommodation for the Spa gran prix??

It's probably not too late, because there will be cancellations. But you will have to be lucky to get somewhere within 20-30km of Spa now.

Depends if you have a car or not - for instance you can still get rooms in Oxford - which is under an hour away from the circuit.

I live between Aylesbury and Oxford, and it only takes me 40-50 mins to get to Silverstone down the M40, or through the back roads between Aylesbury and Silverstone (going through Buckingham and Dadford).

Perhaps don't stay directly in the middle of Oxford though, as getting out of there is a nightmare and you'll spend ages trying to get on to the M40. Either stay in Bicester or the Holiday Inn or Travelodge at Wheatley and dart straight up the motorway.
