This is my first thread on this forum. I am trying to encourage owners of old Saloon Car Racing photos from New Zealand to share them here. I write historical articles for a couple of NZ and Australian car magazines, and am always struggling to find old racing photos to accompany my stories. I'm hoping people on here will be encouraged to show their photos off, and share them with others, and I really hope that they'll be keen to see them used in the pages of various magazines, where they can be enjoyed by the masses. I work closely with Terry Marshall, whose beautiful photography many Kiwis will be familiar with, but I'm always searching for other peoples photos that will complement those of Terry.

Anyway, please share what you have, or if you know of anyone who has a collection, be it large or small, regardless of its quality, I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks in advance
Steve

Good stuff, Steve. I've really enjoyed what I've read of your writings in Australian Muscle Car mag. No doubt Terry has suggested tracking down the portfolios of his best-known contemporaries, Jack Inwood and Euan Sargison. There was also another Christchurch-based photog who worked mainly on bikes, but I think shot cars in the day as well. Seem to recall his name was Evan. It'll be a bit of a battle, but keep digging, mate.

Hi Steve, do you know Bruce Jenkins? He has quite a few shots on my oldracephotos.com website - not that many of NZ tourers but some good ones amongst them all the same (check pages 6-13 in the Touring Cars category. His shots are coded "j". Great quality work too). He lives in Napier - I only have a postal address for him though. Let me know if you would like to get in touch with him. Regards, ellrosso

Recently I was lent some old photograph albums and some slides to scan of NZ speedway cars. Amongst the photos and slides were some photographs taken at Pukekohe and Bay Park in the sixties, here are some for your enjoyment.

Red Dawson, Spinner Black, and Johnny Riley at Pukekohe.

I feel I should recognise the bloke in white overalls on the other side of Red's car in the last photo
Looks like Inky Tulloch but far too early for him

Thank you for that NZ Mustang link , Ellis. Great pics of JR's Mustang.
I moved to Aussie with JR way back when.

I have a house in Rosberg Place and am sure it is around the dummy grid area of Bay Park.

A study of Google Maps reveals the following Streets : Denny Hulme Drive, and off it Rosberg Place, Francevic Ave, Radisich Place(Probably Frank, not Paul), Grable Court, and Crichton Terrace. Also Fahey Ave, Marwood Place and Kingsley Place in the vicinity, and Lotus Avenue as well although it might belong with Poinsettia, Lantana etc.

Do I remember correctly the prizegiving ceremony with Ron Grable and the Governor-General's delectable daughter (?Joanna Porritt) presenting the trophy?

Hi everyone, thanks so much for your replies to this thread. Its really taken off, which is fantastic! Lee, thanks for the link to your photos. I stumbled upon those a couple of months ago on another Forum, and also on your Photobucket page. Yes, they would definitely be of enormous interest. As more and more of the stories from the 70s are told, interest will continue to grow in the 1980s, which was really the last decade of NZ saloon racing where the sport was still dominated by Kiwi Injenuity.

Ellrosso, no I don't know Bruce Jenkins. I couldn't find any shots at all of the NZ saloons on oldracephotos.com. I'll need to take another look.

Ellis French, yes I am a regular visitor to NZMustang, its been really helpful.

Gavin Evitt, thank you for posting those photos, they are absoltely magic! And in colour, even more so! How could I go about getting copies?

Lee, I would also love to get copies of your photos too if at all possible?

Thanks again everyone for your replies, I really appreciate your help. Lets keep this thread ticking over! See what else we can coax out of the woodwork.

Hi Steve, the majority of Bruce's NZ touring car shots on site are from the Wellington Street races in the 80's. There is the odd shot from Pukekohe and Bay Park. He spent a lot of time overseas shooting for Nissan I think - did a lot of Superbikes and Rally as well. Most of our NZ Touring Car stuff on site is from Terry's collection of course.

Yes Wenoopy you probably do. Here is one of the photos I took of the occasion that was published in (and been scanned from) NZ Hot Rod Magazine.
It was around 41 years ago.

And a more formal photo from the collection I scanned.

Here are a couple more colour shots from the scans.
Allan Boyle Mini always imaculate.

And Barry Phillips (I think) Cambridge Mini

And on the subject of Mustangs, it was great to see the Frank Bryan/Red Dawson car at the McLaren Festival and in NZ to stay hopefully.

You'll be right about Barry Phillips. He always ran 86, certainly in the Lotus-Cortina days and I think will all his Minis.
Can't remember if the other Arden Mini, Mary Carney's, ran in Cambridge colours at the same time

BTW, looks very much like NZ saloon champion Rodger Anderson at the far right of that pic

This just happened tp be lurking behind the McLaren Trust tent at Hampton Downs. I did hear that it had been found offshore and bought back to NZ. Looks just like it just drove out of the sixties.

Barry Phillips, Lotus Cortina.

Here are the rest of the photos from the collection I scanned. A bit of a mixture.

I think this was a November Northern Sports Car Club Meet at Pukekohe, that included Australian visitors John Leffler and Don Holland in their Minis.
Must have been run under Allcomers rules.

One of my own favourite saloon photos is this one I took at Levin in 1969? (this scanned from NZ Hot Rod Magazine)

Lunch time fun run. Red Dawson, Paul Fahey, Spinner Black, Johnny Riley (off the track) and Roger Anderson.
