Hi,

I'm trying to find out a bit more about the 750cc engine that ran in an Elite at Le mans in 1961(?)

I understand it was a twin-cam, essentially made up of an FWC block and a V8 head.

Does anyone have any pictures of this engine?

Does anyone know if it still exists?

Thanks,

Gareth

The FWMC was indeed a twincam version of the FWC, used by Lotus at Le Mans in 1961. I only have a twosided drawing available if you don't mind. :)

From Coventry Climax racing engines by Des Hammil:

"In 1961, Coventry Climax built a twin overhead camshaft, 742cc engine for Lotus to use at Le Mans in the 750cc class. Two FWMC racing engines were eventually made based on FWMA engine, but these featured a specially-made twin camshaft cylinder head, the design of which was later applied to the FWMV 1.5 litre V8 Grand Prix engine.".

There is a grainy shot of it from the Amal side in Ortenburger's second book on the Elite, and there is another in Sporting Motorist January '61 reporting Wally Hassan's paper to the SAE in Cleveland the previous autumn/fall.

The #51 UDT/Laystall Lotus Elite was the only car to use the FWMC at Le Mans in 1961. The engine was numbered FWMC/441/2/112.
