Looking through a programme for 1985 i came across this Libre race at a SUNBAC Silverstone meeting in which the winner was Stuart McPherson in a BMW M1.

Presuming it is an EX Procar vehicle does anyone have pictures or can confirm where the car came from .?

This is the GT car built on the ex-Purley Chevron B30, body parts aside it has no relationship to a BMW.

Ït´s far from being a genuine M1. Actually it´s David Purley´s Chevron B30 - which he ran in the 1975 F5000 championship - with a M1 bodyshell! :love:

1-Stuart McPherson /BMW M1 3400cc

The engine is still the same 3.4L Ford GAA V6 engine which was eligible ro run in the F5000 series back then.

I think it also features on one of Steve Jones' Youtube clips, running in the Formula Libre race at Oulton in May 1985, with F5000 bodywork

It appears first at 0.25 ....looks very neat, rather small for an F5000 and sounds lovely!

Stil it doesn't resemble the genuine B30 anywhere near it (pictured) and it's plain ugly too.

But then Mike Pilbeam had been brought in to radically revise it for 1976 and so it looks exactly like that version, except for the colour. Agreed it looks much better as originaly drawn up by Derek Bennett - a man with a remarkable eye for making 'functional' look 'attractive'! :up:

Yes, Purley did it in 1976 by a countrymile. He won half the races (6 out of 13).

Many thanks for all the answers, i was at that race but just could not remember if it were a pukka M1 .

The Chevron B30 was a nice car and in Purley's hands was very quick .

Growing up in the 70's I remember good old John Noakes trying out the LEC Chevron B30 on childrens TV programme Blue Peter. I think it was at Oulton Park and he tried a B29(?) beforehand before graduating to the B30, anyone remember that?

The early 1975 B30 had the traditional Chevron wide nose, but the 1976 incarnation following Pilbeams input, had the Ferrari 312B type wing and side rads. The 1977 LEC F1 car (designed by M Pilbeam?) looked similar.

Lovely car and the GAA V6 made a great noise!

The episode of " Go with Noakes " was set against the Good Friday meeting at Oulton: the year when it snowed .... however John Noakes ( without Shep ) did test a Formula Atlantic Chevron at Goodwood during the programme.

Did Noakes drive the B30 as well as the FA Chevron or is my memory playing tricks with me? Thanks for the reminder about the snow at Oulton, its a shame it isnt on youtube
