This Friday HGCPA Test Day and Saturday VSCC. Should be a good couple of days, Anyone else going ????????

Reading between the lines, I think the HGPCA have got the track on Friday morning and VSCC Friday afternoon, but as there's an HGPCA race on Saturday it may not make much difference

I'll be there on Saturday. Hope it's less muddy than the Pom was!

I was there on Sunday and the earth banks are baked hard. This is creating a problem though with sand being blown across the track. I would take a stout pair of boots as a lot of the ground is quiet rough still.

I'm not sure that Joe public is welcome tomorrow as the last test day was closed, (press accreditation only!) and there's nobody at the circuit right now who can tell me!

Having just spoken to Stella at the HGPCA, she said the club don't object to spectators at the test day. She wasn't aware of any charge.

It is a HGPCA test day, with the VSCC having 2 sessions for pre war cars (3-3.30 & 4.30-5)

I tend to think I've seen most of them before, but I'm sure Ted or David will be able to tell you if there was anything new there. What I thought was good, was their test day seemed to be like a race day...most were out on track in their time slots, they were all trying hard and there was plenty of overtaking. The circuit was shortened ( but I guess that's because they're still working on parts of it).
I did take a few static pics at their lunchtime - and if I've got some that people haven't posted tomorrow then I'll try and stick them up.
There were very few 'dedicated' spectators, and in the morning I was 1 of about 5. The afternoon saw more, but even then I'd put it as less than 30.
I really enjoyed it, and would certainly go to another of their test days again

Since it was free today and I got 6 hours worth of action....I think I did well

I go to a lot of historic events anyway, so it was more in the 'Silverstone classic' type of event style. I think the tickets are only £10 for tomorrow's races.... so yes

Before I continue & I know it's been said before, the commentary at these VSCC events is quite frankly hilarious, and worth going along for alone! It's a cross between Monty Python & Ripping Yarns! :rotfl:

This Ferrari smelt like a fake. It did however have alot of Win Percy's BRDC passes hanging from the dash..... Can anyone ID the car?

All you need to go racing (including the 'Nash).

I must say that I would hate to be a commentator - but with that proviso, I really miss the VSCC 'commentary gang' of old, who managed to blend "Well I mind the time" insights with accurate race info as it happened. It also sounded as though the relocation of the commentary box from above the main start-finish grandstands to one above the pits gives a very limited field of view, making the task even more difficult. And boy it shows!

But it was a wonderful VSCC day all the same.

An inverted Lotus 18/21 of Andrew Wanty at Copse after clipping a spinning Brian Jolliffe in his Cooper T45. Andrew emerged unscathed, but the astroturf certainly seemed to assist the flip, and a large flap of it remained upturned for the resuming race.

Yes I did sell all of my books in the morning so had bu...er all to sell by lunchtime.(apart from hot rod mags) so went walkabout.Lots of people to talk to and very good racing. I think without the HGPCA content the meeting would be very dull.

modern racing cars

I started to marshal at events 42 years ago Allan, and there was nothing at Silverstone yesterday that I saw run in period........... :blush:

However, Allan has a good point here, and one I was discussing with Simon Hadfield last Wednesday. Nostalgia has a sell-by date; I only photographed the cars that were of interest to me and subjected you all to my tastes by posting them here! The rest of the meeting is of little specific interest to me, and thus I like very many of the spectators there yesterday was just enjoying a good day out. I am fascinated by the exotic and quirky stuff, but have no desire to spend my time photographing row upon row of Rileys (not that I have anything against Rileys!).
I am nearly 56 years of age, and I was certainly below the average age in the paddock. Most visitors had a browse through, and then went to find a grassy knoll or grandstand seat from which to sit with an icecream, relax, take the sun and watch a bit of racing. The only vehicle that drew anything vaguely resembling a crowd in the paddock all day was the 200hp Darracq, which will give you an idea of the requirements of the average paying spectator!
As Ted says, the meeting was enhanced by the HCGPA content, and the VSCC recognise this and have responded, as they have with the 'See Red' meetings. These 'add-ons' allow them to continue running their core events whilst keeping support up. I attended my first VSCC event in 1970 (as a marshal) and it they remain a great experience as a result of the efforts of the club and a highlight of the year for me. We all have our pet period or era which is of most importance to us as individuals, but in reality they are all the same and pass through in popularity as the generations who are nostalgic about them move on, leaving a core of enthusiasts to keep the memory alive.

I assumed you must be quite young - using a pseudonym, etc. - and as I remember proper (front-engined) GP cars racing, your comment confirms that! (edited to say that I just looked you up and so you are!)
I used "modern" in the VSCC sense.
Apart from invitation events post-war grand prix and sports cars are not eligible - though the front-engined GP cars have been "honorary VSCC cars" since the early 1960s.

I attended my first race meeting in May 1952 and I sometimes feel that I am now too old for todays 'Historic' racing, though yesterday's 'Lindsay-Rothschild' race was a 12 lap blinder which really lifted the spirits. Many thanks to all concerned!.

The angle of the upper rear radius rod is interesting - and similar to the Ferrari 1512 that appeared in Bahrain. It looks like a 1965 upright and a 1964 chassis mounting point.

If this is 2615 - and I've no reason to doubt giraffe's assertion - it had an interesting history. In 1965 it was, unique among P261s, fitted with alternative mounting points for those radius rods. There is no sign of that on this car that I can see. Two years later it was fitted with a 3-litre V12 engine. This involved replacement of the rear part of the monocoque to accommodate the longer engine. Presumably it was rebuilt at some stage for the V8 but why the (apparent) 1964 mounting points?

Lovely action shot, Tony.

The car for me (albeit not racing) was the Don Lee Special Tipo B Alfa, belonging to Hugh Taylor, which was in the Brooklands "Double 12" display. AlthoughI saw it at the Festival of Speed some years ago, it doesn't get aired in public very often.

T'wasn't I!
Had it been, I too would have gone through Whittlebury as I have been doing for over 50 years!
I didn't go as (a) I haven't been there except to work for decades and I've stopped being a judge at VSCC events or a handicrapper at others and
(b) I had agreed to help guide a visiting party from the 20th Century Society round Letchworth that day before the VSCC date had been announced.
