Spark have just released a nice 1:43 model of the 'Torno' sponsored Brun Porsche 962 (chassis 962C-107) that ran at Le Mans in 1985 driven by Walter Brun, Joel Gouhier and Didier Theys.

While researching this car and deciding whether to add it to my collection, I saw that it was almost totally destroyed in an accident around the 20 hour market of the race having completed 304 laps.

Unfortunately I don't have the 1985 Le Mans annual and looking around on the net I can't find much information on this car and even less about the accident. A few of the question I had were :
  • What position was the car in before the crash,
  • What caused the accident (no other cars retired from accident damage around this time),
  • Who was driving at the time and were they able to walk away.
Any information would be appreciated.

While looking for details of the car I did find this website indicating the car was rebuilt after the accident to IMSA specifications and subsequently restored in 2000 :

Hello Jager

Nice pic   because it's mine   thaken in my first visit in LE MANS...

So I've got the 1985 annual, and I give you the answers :

Joël GOUHIER was the driver at the crash moment at 11h50 in the Hunaudières Strait .
No damage for him but the car crash first to the rigth, cross the track on the roof , crash on the left part , make several flips and finally stopped on the right in his wheels , just at the 4km panel.
His place before the crash was 6th.

With my poor english , I hope to answer to yours questions.

Regards.

Tire blowout would be the most likely obvious cause a la the Sauber team in '88, though it sounds nearly identical to Jo Gartner's crash the following year on the same straight in the same type of car which had an undetermined cause. Gartner was killed, but his car left the confines of the armco barriers and caught fire. Speculation seems to be that he hit the brakes and swerved to avoid something on the track (animal?) but I guess we'll never know.

Hi Haine, thanks for the detailed information (and of course your photo). I though it was strange that I haven't been able to find pictures or video of this accident given it happen during the middle of the day. Some reports I found of the race don't even mention this incident.
