Police will investigate fingerprints of steering wheel and speed-stick and it will tell who was driving.
Only if any previous drivers wiped their prints first.

This to me says, that they suspect JJ but that he denies. If it turns out so, and the police can prove it, JJ is in more sheisse than I imagined.

Of course cynical part of me thinks he is just covering his own ass - but I hope he is man enough to confess if he remembers driving the boat. It would be the first step to ever redeem himself.

It's JJ's boat so there will be plenty of JJ's fingerprints there anyway. The point is not to find any fingerprints of the other candidate. I think it's also possible to determine which prints are on top if there's different prints there.

Don't take that 70km/h too seriously. It just an estimate by first person on the scene. Anyway, looking at the pictures propably over 40km/h and drunk, that's dumb. The good thing is that this happened a week before mid summer fest, so maybe a few will consider not to drive boat so drunk after reading about JJ.Holy crap!
I just watched the video. Are you telling me they ran 70kph down that little levy?
What a dumb ass. Drugs are bad JJ

I don't see the need for this specific word
Especially when it's not even spelled correctly.

There will be prints of the other man, earlier in the day both JJ and his friend were seen travelling with the same boat, both having their families with them. At that time JJ's friend was driving the boat.
Yes, it's possible that the police have a way of finding out which prints were the most recent. Also they can look closely at the injuries of both men, and how they fit with how the boat was damaged.
By the way there was a mistake in that english article posted here earlier: the canal is not 2 meters wide, it's 3.8 meters wide. The width of the boat is 2.59 meters, so it wouldn't even fit into a 2 meter canal.
Some more information I haven't seen here: JJ and friend had arrived in the bar/restaurant close to the harbour around midnight. The restaurant closed at 2.30. Having seen them drinking, the doorman of the bar reminded them not to go boating and suggested they go to a hotel for the night.
Apparently they had not listened, and had decided to drive with the boat back to JJ's villa. Around 3.40 in the morning a man who lives close to the canal bridge was woken up by someone knocking on his door. He and his wife were at first suspicious of someone knocking on their door in the middle of the night, but then they saw the man was dripping wet and shivering, trying to dry himself with a towel that had been hung outside to dry.
They let him in, and saw the man was in shock, but they didn't recognize it was JJ Lehto. He was asking for help. They gave him a blanket to warm himself with. He seemed to have only a scratch on his arm, otherwise he didn't seem to be injured. They had difficulty communicating at first, the couple speaking only Swedish (common around that part of Finland), and JJ suffering from the shock and concussion of the crash. JJ couldn't remember clearly if he had even been in the boat himself, or how many had been onboard.
The couple's son was also there, and he went to the canal to see what had happened. He found the remains of the boat and called the authorities at 4.04.

Back in the 1980s, Miller Brewing had an advertising slogan "Think when you Drink"....
Suuuuure...........
Back in the 70s a busing company advertised that a positive about using them was that you could drink during your trip.
Slogan: "Go by bus, and leave the drinking to us!" Sounds quite different than intended!

Full line was: "Remember this Holiday season, drinking and driving don't mix: So go by bus and leave the drinking to us!"
Still sounds different than intended.

The intention is to remind people not to drink and drive. If you must travel during the holidays and want to drink, take our bus. Drink on the bus and get intoxicated while we drive sober.
But it sounds like ride with us sober while we drink and drive intoxicated... Defeating the purpose...

That idiot would microwave ice cream so he could eat (actually drink) it faster to gain weight faster for that movie. Then he ate nothing but cabbage soup to lose the weight quickly afterwards.

Jyrki Järvilehto was in police questining today and news says he cannot remember accident or what happened before it. He is also very shocked his good friend died in accident. Have to wait till they reveal something new.
The cynic in me says that that is quite convenient and not unexpected.

Honest officer, the last I remember was downing a shot at closing time. I must have passed out in the back of the boat.Jyrki Järvilehto was in police questining today and news says he cannot remember accident or what happened before it. No witnesses, and the only other person that knows the truth besides Lehto, is dead.
I hope for his sake, Lehto was passed out, and not at the wheel, otherwise he'll have to lie to himself the rest of his life about committing manslaughter.
I'd have to say that he'll walk on this.

Finnish laws are so fu-ked up,that even if he is guilty, then he propably only gets probation. One good thing is that i dont have to hear his stupid comments on TV again.

In true forum fashion Lehto has been found guilty with no supporting evidence bar the fact that he was present at the time.

The problem the police is having is that they would have to prove that Järvilehto was either 1) operating the boat at the time of the accident, or that 2) he let his drunken friend operate the boat. They cannot charge him for both of those things, they will have to pick one and go with it. If they cannot prove one or the other, it's possible that there will be no case at all. They cannot charge him for both of those things at the same time and hope one would stick.
If they have no eye-witnesses for who was operating the boat, and if Järvilehto doesn't remember, as he's saying, and if they cannot get proof any other way (reconstruction, finger prints, etc.) then they have pretty much nothing else than a wrecked boat and one injured person and one dead person. That's not enough to go to court with.
Really, this is speculation, we'll just have to wait and see what's going to happen. I imagine it could be late this year until we know whether there will be a trial or not.

What sort of question is that? Can't you see people are too busy throwing around accusations and handing out jail sentences. We have no facts at all but lock him up I say. He's bound to be lying that shifty son of a bitch. I always thought he was the type to cause a fatal crash and then lie to the police, not surprised at all.How is his health?
Bring out the torches and pitchforks people.

Being the wuzzy European, my instinct was along the lines of: "If he hasn't attacked me, and you should always use the appropriate amount of retaliation, and such, I'd go for the leg".
"Wrong, go for the head. One less explanation the police has to listen to"

What was the final official finding of what happened? Was anyone charged in this matter?
The Finnish justice system is far slower than that. I'll be surprised if the decicion on pressing charges is made during this year, not to even mention when the trial is.

Isn't that enough with some details?
Side of the boat where passenger was, got destroyed. Seat for driver has been maybe most safe spot in boat and Lehto survived. 1+1=2

Suspicion isn't enough to convict someone. You must prove it.

The police have now made their mind, and next the prosecutor will indeed try to prove it.Suspicion isn't enough to convict someone. You must prove it.
(translated from a yesterday's tabloid)Thorough investigation of over half a year by the police does not support the possibility that the boat of racing driver Jyrki Järvilehto, 44, would have been navigated by someone else than himself.

Proof is another word for heavy suspicion. Many crimes can't be proven 100% but 90% is enough most of the time for a conviction. In this case the boats passenger side was destroyed and if JJ had been sitting there he would've been dead now instead of other guy, so it won't be too much of a stretch for the prosecutors to charge him with manslaughter or something. It's up to the judge if s/he finds the evidence enough or not.
