The sadist in me had been imagining the peleton sweating up the climb from Eau Rouge past the old pits and straight on at La Source. Quite a steep drag to finish off a 100 odd miles in the saddle.

Don't worry, I think the two Third Category climbs (the Stockeu and Aisomont) near Stavelot will be tougher than anything on the Spa circuit.The sadist in me had been imagining the peleton sweating up the climb from Eau Rouge past the old pits and straight on at La Source. Sad to say ,the whole peleton seemed to hit the deck at least once today! and tomorrow they have to race around 130 miles including cobbled roads used in the Paris-Roubaix,still cant be as hard as kicking a football about for 90 minutes a week can it?Don't worry, I think the two Third Category climbs (the Stockeu and Aisomont) near Stavelot will be tougher than anything on the Spa circuit.

I thought that yesterday's reaction by the leading riders was a bit strange. It was hardly the organisers' fault that it rained a little and that the roads got slippery. What was the point of not contesting the finish? A real treat for the spectators to see no-one sprinting. When I noticed one of the stages was going to finish in Spa, the fan in me was of course wondering whether they would cycle over a part of the track or not. Would have been a nice sight, surely.
I would say a missed opportunity, personally. But given the extraordinary carnage so far, maybe it was just as well.
Hopefully today we will actually see a decent finish, even though a large number of riders now appear to be sporting scars and bruises...

There can't be any motor racing fans in the Peloton or among the race organisers. I would have been pretty cheesed off if I'd been in the crowd at the finish - you wait all day for the big finish and then nothing happens. A bit like Saturday qualifying for the Belgian GP in 1992 (if I've got the year right) - it bucketed with rain the whole hour and all the qualifying times were set on Friday.
Anyway, good on Chavenal - he earned the yellow jersey the hard way.

But if you think about it, a town or city centre finish is preferable to an out of town race track as it is more accessible for spectators (and of course the town pays the Tour organisers handsomely for the privilege). And given that, then there is no good reason to use a race track as part of the route when they can just use the regular road. Cyclists will always look a bit naff on a race track anyway - fast as the top boys may be, they will always look pedestrian compared to race cars.

The old Nurburgring has been used a few times for the World Road race championship, last time in 1978 when Gerrie Knetemann from Francesco Moser

Clearly not a co-driver since the route defined on the official site, together with Google Maps and/or Earth show clearly the route arriving at Stavelot from the south west, via Trois Ponts, dipping down to the south, turning back north into Stavelot, then back to Trois Ponts, staying to the west of Francorchamps - through La Gleize and Borgoumont.

We arrived on the Saturday morning, hung around all day hoping something might happen (highlight of the day - watching Sir JYS walk the track) then got carted off by Page & Moy for a nice day out in Bruges on the Sunday, so we missed the F3000 race.At least someone got to Spa in 85 - some of us only got to Zeebrugge that year ...

I'd like to think you're right, but I suspect Contador is going to make it three...
Having never raced over the cobbles before, Contador rode extremely well, and, barring injury, looks like scoring his third Tour victory. Evans has been something of a revelation this year, showing a willingness to attack that was previously lacking. He is proving worthy of his Rainbow Jersey. Not much chance of a Tour win though, after his tough Giro d'Italia just a few weeks ago. Much the same applies to Ivan Basso unfortunately.

Went there once for a vintage meeting. Dan Marguiles won heat 1 in his Maser then when easily leading the final pulled the steering column out of the rack. We were highly amused & Dan wasn't! If you have ever studied Dan's driving style you would understand the joke. He treated the steering wheel as he if he was Lester Piggott riding a tight finish definitely not in the style of Farina. I think Simon Taylor went on to win. It was so cold we had to shake the snow off the Maser's tarp before practice!

The next stage finishes at Reims. And some of the later stages start and finish in Pau. Maybe we should rename the 2010 edition as Tour des Circuits.
BTW...Go Cadel! Nice work today on the cobbles. It's good to see that mountain bike experience comes to the fore when needed.
Quite a few circuits, hill climbs and rally stages on or near this year's Tour de France hence TonyK's play on words.
