Not sure if this blatant ad will be tolerated here, but perhaps it could be viewed as a service to subscribers??? All kinds of road and racing car photography can now be viewed and/or supplied in print form from the newly launched Motorgraphs.com website.

If you have an idle moment take a trawl through here - www.motorgraphs.com

...you might end up spending quite a time there...

Brilliant stuff, Doug. Just had a brief trawl. Lovely shots of NGH in 12 and 16 in 1958/59, Bugatti T251......and it is surprising what you forget, Nuvolari in XK120 at Silverstone. The very early stuff is superb, such good period shots.

Ahem - yeeeesss - the site has actually been put together by our colleague David Weguelin of Motorfilms movie archive fame - Motorfilms/Motorgraphs geddit???? - and it will offer some of the better material from GPL, from Matt & Di Spitzley's sister collections which include Franco Zagari's material and George Monkhouse's negs, and also from the Motor Industry Heritage Collection archive at Gaydon.

My Maurice-Louis Branger pre-WW1 glass plate negs will eventually feature there, and over coming weeks masses more 1920s-30s-40s-50s-60s-70s-80s-90s material will progressively be added. Everyone is obviously welcome to browse - and it would be nice to see one or two prints being purchased on the easy-to-use system them.

But initially please do tell like-minded friends, fellow enthusiasts...and picture editors...of course. :blush:

I was going to ask about earlier stuff, Doug - but you might have guessed that! I don't know whether you can anwer this immediately, but is there any chance of some of the less visible parts of the BMIHT's Nick Baldwin Archive being made available? There's a lot of racing pictures there which just say things like "Alfa Romeo - packet of 22 prints 1928-51".

Just caught up with all the stuff on GPL congrats on a fab site Doug, Im sure I'd have great fun counting all those prints individually but I'd probably never get to the end :-)

Really to early to comment as the site is only just up and running.

However, one suggestion, in order to aid navigation and guide the viewer to his or her particular subject interest it would be of assistance to have a sub-directory level within the main subject headings which are too broad at present.

I'm not sure we do 'basking' - we DO make corrections... please feel free... :cool:

Odsey - prints only at the moment. But we have to walk before we can run. There are around 2-million images 1902-2002 from which to choose, and that takes time...as does the captioning process. Weg has a chap who does that. It's called drawing the short straw...

I'm not sure we do 'basking' - we DO make corrections... please feel free...

Very good point - thank you. Site will develop over the next few weeks. Only launched this week, after all...

Re offering prints electronically - as scans - the only possible reason I can see for doing that would be for providing high-resolution scans to the printed media for reproduction in their publications, triggering a formal reproduction fee. Happy to oblige.

I have no desire to appear aggressive, but surely you do no think the electronic version will be free? You are entitled to your views on pricing, since such things are always subjective, but you would be well served to check with other photo archives and magazine libraries etc to check for prices. You are not paying for someone's holiday snap. Many of these old archives remain private, qv. how I would welcome sight of more of Peter Coltrin's work

With regards to correcting them, I would think that any graining or marking would add to the period effect, after all, they were not taken with digital cameras. It is also all about availability. The photographs/negatives/plates cost money to buy and to preserve, - or would sell for large sums- and there is a cost to the added value, ie scanning, captioning etc and posting on site, plus the value of copyright.

No, surely I don't expect it to be free, but I don't want to spend money on the photo paper, the printing, the packaging and the posting when it will end in the bin anyway as I have to work on it and reprint it.

Having worked in writing F1 magazines and books, I have an idea about the prices, but for that price you can use them commercially, and I would want them only for my private use.

But of course I can see the dangers, CrashPA offer their photos digitally (ok, they were very amateur in the way they stored the photos), and the result is that anyone that has ever seen a torrent client can download their whole archive from 1950 to 1999 in 2 hours.

Oh, isn't this good.

Not just the motor racing photographs, but the motor industry factory pictures, the advertising shots, the fashion in motoring etc sections have material few if any of us will have ever seen before. A brilliant new resource, well done all involved .

Well on the 500s, a couple are wrong:
415302: 1955 Goodwood, September is correctly Goodwood, 26th September 1953: Don Parker (Kieft CK52) leads Stuart Lewis-Evans (Beart Cooper Mk VIIa)
415197: 1954, Goodwood, Moss, Cooper is correctly Silverstone, 15th May 1954: Stirling Moss in the Beart-Cooper Mk VIIa (a clue in the background. Remember when the Daily Express was a real newspaper?)

As others have said, I'd check the site on a few more browsers. I'm getting all the images dumped to the bottom of the screen. ALso, oddly, while I'm offered to view the images in multiples of four, they are displayed in rows of five.

No - you cannot do that with our photographs for the price of a print.

But here our intention was for fellow enthusiasts to enjoy the images, not to spectate at a debate upon commercial issues relating to a photo archive.

I don't know about yours without asking you of course. As far as I can remember (and it was a couple of years ago) we bought digital images for use in the magazine between €25 and 75.

No debate here - we are all enjoying these great rare shots

I have yet to stray beyond the bounds of the 'Advertising' section, although I did enjoy a brief diversion to take in the wonderful image of the 1954, British GP, Kling, Mercedes in the speed section. It is a wonderful resource, a dream come true for many. If any expansion is planned, it should come with accompanying health warning.

That wonderful MG EX135 illustration!

Quite straightforward really - unless we've made a gigantic blunder we - the contributing Collections - own the original negatives and the original colour transparencies from which the images are scanned. We are the copyright holders.
