Elfin FJ / Catalina Ch. No. 6313

There seem to be quite a few threads appearing on Elfin cars so please forgive me for starting another - chassis specific - one.

Elfin Formula Junior / Catalina chassis 6313 was the car used by Andrew Mustard at Lake Eyre in 1963 and 1964 to test the track that he was responsible for preparing - as Dunlop's representative - for Donald Campbell's eventually successful LSR with Bluebird CN7 which was achieved on 17th July 1964. As far as I know, the car, presumably built in 1963, was constructed to the Australian National 1.5 ltre formula. At Lake Eyre it was fitted with wheels and tyres which looked like smaller versions of those fitted to CN7. Later, Andrew Mustard used this car to attack various Australian national records.

Just wondered if any pics surfaced since the above post on the Clisby thread? Also. does know if Mr Dean Rainsford of Adelaide still owns this car? I would also be interesting to know if the wheels and tyres used in 1964 are still around somewhere too. I see that the Elfin Heritage Centre websire has a pic of the Elfin with Bluebird CN7

Dad remembers it being back at Conmurra Avenue after it's trip to Lake Eyre, though that was many years ago!!

Many thanks for that. I'll contact the Elfin Heritage Centre and the Registrar and see what we can discover! Search prompted by re-reading "Bluebird and the Dead Lake", John Pearson's book on Donald Campbell's successful 1964 LSR attempt at Lake Eyre. Clearly, Andrew Mustard and Donald Campbell just about tolerated each other but the animosity seemed to remain until the end of the Project. Does anyone know if Mr Mustard is still alive?

I can still recall what engine modifications were undertaken in 1964 and again in 1965 for the 2 seperate record attempts at WRE (now DSTO/Edinburgh Airfield).

John, how about starting an Elfin Formula Junior thread for all the Elfin Juniors/Catalinas? It would be nice to see the period shots of these beautiful cars consolidated into one spot......

Were they run in both wet and dry sump configuration in period?

Dry sumps weren't everyday in the early sixties...

I'd suggest that more wet sumps were seen, but Brian Lear would be better able to categorically answer that question.
