The forums should now be recovered from an extended period of unavailability today, which was caused by corruption to the database table holding the forum posts. A major network fault at our datacentre is ultimately the cause of inconsistency developing in the database, which brought things to a halt when the server considered the posts table corrupt.

As there are over four-and-a-half million posts in the table, it takes considerable time to repair such a situation by re-indexing the table. Due to a configuration issue, the repair was being processed in an inefficient way and unfortunately it took time to spot and rectify this problem.

We will obviously fully investigate the causes of this issue and work to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

In the meantime, please accept my apologies for the interruption to the forum service.

Yes nice to see it back, great job by the team.

Still in the event something like this happens again it might be good to make it more apparent what's happening, via the main site or twitter. Because as far as I could tell there wasn't anything other than the forum telling me it broke.

What else did you need to know?

Good job getting the forum back without any data loss.

There was a message if you tried to access the forums that there was a technical problem, what more did you want?

I had different messages. It's not a major problem, but if it's going to be down for a few hours I thought it would of been useful.

Blimey!! I finally get a chance to catch up on all the forums and you go and ruin my life completely by taking away the only chance that I've had to really enjoy the forum this summer. How can Atlas, oh sorry, Haymarket/Autosport continue as a working organisation if they treat their members like this. I demand a refund for every year that I have subscribed to this place; I regard your intolerable treatment of subscribers like myself. I would also expect at least 2 million pounds/euros/dollars(I'm not proud) in compensation be paid into my swiss bank account immediately. This is a complete disgrace.

BTW sad sacks who think that this is a real response to an obviously unavoidable situation should STFU.

Well done for getting everything back to normal.

I thought that was weird 'cos Autosport Live wasn't working and I always thought that was a chat based thing.

It's different to the 'chat' in the top right of this page which is an IRC based chat. It's pretty cool in there, a few freaks ;) and some weirdos who just go in there and spy on what people are saying but it's generally a decent bunch of people. :)

Hopefully this should now be fixed and apologies for the inconvenience.

Well, hadn't noticed it in January, but...

... have gotten several "IPS Driver error" crashes (in Firefox - in IE6 it just loses connection and then gives "Server unavailable" messages when I try to reconnect) over the past two days.

Anything to report?

Our hosting provider has been carrying out essential upgrade work to its network infrastructure, causing some short outages and instability during off-peak hours.

Apologies for the lengthy outage today, this was again caused by corruption of the database table that stores all the posts.

I have taken the opportunity to dump and rebuild the entire forum database, which may or may not help resolve this issue. With almost five million posts, it's clear we are hitting some issues with the size of the posts table and I will be looking at solutions to move archive posts elsewhere.

Still getting IPS Driver Error frequently. Using Mozilla Firefox and Windows 7 if that has any significance.

I fixed my IPS Error message problem by simply deleting my old "favourites" link and making a new one. No further problems. Very odd, but there we go. The happy wotld of computing.

Over the past week, using various browsers and various kinds of computers at various locales, have found access to the Paddock Club forum to be slow, jumpy & unstable, and it often fails outright.

Maintenance?
Upgrade?

Other issues?

EDIT: FWIW, access to this forum seems not to involve similar issues; the News section feels a bit sluggish, but otherwise presents no problems.

I've found the whole forums to be painfully slow in loading, and often failing to load at all and having to refresh to even access the boards. Happens on both IE and Firefox and various computers. I mean seriously painfully slow, as in welcome back to the days of a 28.8 modem slow.

Neil

PS: Took two refreshes to even get this posted.

Zmeej, it may be down to popularity. I've noticed similarly slow responses to gmail clicks on this side of the pond too. At certain times it's a case of give up and try later. At other times no probs.

tbh i've never had a problem accessing the site or the forum - i can recommend ccleaner (google it, its free and my endorsement is purely honourable lol), easy to install and its very good at helping you do things like clear your caches, internet history folders, registry entries (old stuff) and all that......its very useful and pretty safe unless you're the 'sledgehammer to crack a nut'-type ;)

other things to check include whether your ISP is port-throttling during peak times, whether your connection settings in your pc are up to date, whether your anti-virus or OS needs updating....generally whether your pc/laptop/phone are being kept clean and tidy :) a little housekeeping never did anyone any harm now, did it?;)

Hmmm. Uncharacteristic silence from Hack, even as the problem persists... :well:

Also failed to mention the persistent incidence of being bumped to a non-formatted "directory" while trying to access a thread, to submit a post, etc.

Perhaps you've said something to upset Pascal? :p

It might be, but I've had these issues around the clock, at various times of the week (even on non-race weekends, when activity is usually down).

Puzzling.
