The Official Big Summer Break Thread

You can discuss whatever you like, but try to make a tiny bit related and useful
Let's start with a statement from Stefano Domenicali that sums up the summer break for the teams:

No F1 mostly means nothing to do at 8 am on Sat and Sun since I'm in the states.

"son of the 3 time world driving champion" as they just said on the commentary

I was watching the BTCC yesterday and wondering, why can't Lewis or Jenson just show up for a guest drive?

Didn't think Domenicali had found his yet

It seems that Formula One drivers spend hardly any of their careers actually being racing drivers. They compete in about 20 races a year. Less than 40 hours worth of races per season. No wonder the racing is dreadful, they're all out of practice!
I was watching the BTCC yesterday and wondering, why can't Lewis or Jenson just show up for a guest drive?
The teams would rather have them doing endless laps on simulators, than risking injury and gaining bad habits from driving cars with different characteristics to the F1s. It's kinda sad but that's what we have.

Perhaps this means that Ferrari only have one brain between them?"The brain does not stop working on holiday"
Didn't think Domenicali had found his yet
Anyway, a clear admission that Ferrari are cheating as usual, by thinking during the summer break!

All F1 engineers should be fitted with an FIA Standard Brain which allows the FIA to control what they're thinkg at all times.

He's obviously talking about Nikos cause ... i really don't think there's anybody else with a brain left at Ferrari.

I would love to see Lewis* or Jenson in a BMW. They wouldn't really be on the pace in a FWD car, I don't think, without a lot of testing.I was watching the BTCC yesterday and wondering, why can't Lewis or Jenson just show up for a guest drive?
Not sure Jenson would enjoy the argy-bargy tin-top tactics but I reckon Lewis would relish it.
* as long as it wasn't too near Croydon, of course

The FIA could fix this easily with a minimum participation requirement. To qualify for a superlicense you have to participate in at least 30 FIA-sanctioned events per year. Then drivers would have to race in other series.
This is the greatest idea I've ever had, someone fax Todt immediately!

best thing about it though, despite hating pre seasons of both, at least I have football in the winter then F1 in the summer.

One of the channels I came across in my hunt for a good stream seemed to be showing F1 races from years past.
Might be worth a look there if you need your F1 fix. What surprised me is how different the engines sounded a few years ago (season showing was 2004 I think), the higher revs really stand out now we are used to "lesser" engines.

Have to agree there, the Austria 2002 footage on youtube really highlights the 'scream' of those v10s in the Austrian hillside - they sounded magnificent.

it's cost cutting nothing to do with resting

To reduce costs, mainly. It still baffles me as to why the FIA have to mandate a specific engine size.
Anyways, why are people here saying Ferrari are stupid and Luca doesn't have a brain? I think a lot of people expected Ferrari to drop into mediocrity after Schumi/Brawn/Todt left, that didn't happen. Then people were saying the same thing was going to happen when the new regulations were introduced, and while 2009 wasn't as good as their previous years, they still won a race, had several podiums, and we saw other F1 superpowers have big struggles themselves. And now, they are back, winning races with a very competitive car.
But I'm sure NEXT year, they'll start living up to y'alls expectations and start falling all over themselves, right?
When will some people just admit that Ferrari is still an extremely competent F1 team?

I heard it mentioned on the BBCs coverage after the end of the last GP, but what caught my ear was the fact that it wasn't the same for all teams. I thought the whole point was for all team member to get a minimum guaranteed break? Or are some teams giving additional time off?

It's a forced 2 week factory closure, meaning the factory must be closed for 14 consecutive days. Doesn't matter when you do it, you just have to do 14 consecutive days.
AFAIK McLaren shut down right after the Hungary race, most of the other teams shut down either last Sunday or Monday

All regulation changes in F1 seem to be done to reduce costs nowadays Remind me again why a budget cap with more technical freedom is a bad idea?

I'm just going to suffer from depression. It is that bad that I was off sick with whiplash and decided to back to work when I'm not able to do my job because I will go crazy. I can't even read a book because the neck gives up after 20 minutes. I also hate daytime tv.
may you be 100% better soon!

Despite the car not being successful that V12 engine is legendary just because of the sheer heavenly sound it produced. Especially on the downshifts and dabs of power ah pure Italian Brutality I'd gladly wake up to that every morning as my alarm.Call me a fanboi if you will but nothing will ever compare to this ->

and it is not like they work year round with nov to march break already
race all summer and do the down under races in their summer
plus run the desert races in the cooler times too

My opinion is that F1 drivers and team members are paid enough, so they should bloody well carry on.
It is a cost saving measure, so why not just say that the crap teams can have a holiday if they want, seeing as they won't score any points anyway, and allow the serious teams to keep racing.
Just make quali 2 sessions, and automatically eject Kobayashi at the start.
