Just got back from Shepton. Good day for me with a couple of D-types and BRM I needed but alas no Astons. I got quite excited as there were a couple of stalls selling Ixo Le Mans cars for £8.95. I went through the entire stock both above and below the tables in the hope of picking a DBR1/300, but nothing. Well there was a nice 250GTO which I couldn't resist.

Best moment of the day came when I was introduced to Sue Leake on the Wessex Collectors stand. Really great to meet you Sue.

That'll be a Ferrari, then...

odd about the Astons - I'm sure that there were was a DB3s readily and cheaply available (I think an IXO, too) not many years ago - indeed I have one, a 1953 Le Mans car that I modified to be Peter Collins' 1953 Dundrod winner. It can't have been expensive or I would not have it. Now all that appear to be available are SMTS hand-mades at £100+

Thanks for looking for me.

Glad you met Sue. I must get to one of these toy fairs one day.

Awww, Tony. What a nice thing to say. I must say I enjoyed meeting you and Pat and enjoyed our chat. I usually pop upstairs to meet up with friends from Wessex MTC. Hope you didn't spend too much money - Shepton has a tendency to make me part with mine!

Malcolm you really should go to Shepton at least - toy fairs are fun.

Hi Sue, glad to hear the Wessex mob are still operating from the same corner, my stall used to be just along a bit from them. Perhaps we should organise a TNF meet at Shepton like they do at Goodwood?

Now that is a good idea  . I always stop by to chat with the Wessex "Mob" who are old friends and also meet members of the Farm Toys Forum (yes, I collect old farm toys) and often members of the South Hants Club too. I am a regular at Shepton although I often miss the December one but Shepton is, for me, a social event. Would be great to meet for coffee and a chat.

Combine the TNF meet with a pilgrimage to the Haynes. Now there's a thought...

Hi Tony, Sue, Malcolm and anyone else; Exeter Toy Fair taking place next Sunday, Nov. 4, at Westpoint. I will have 2 new 1/43s from Tony Smith; Cliff Davis's Tojeiro Bristol LOY 501 and the 1956 Mille Miglia HWM. Latter a bit morbid I know but never quite sure about models of such cars.

Oops. LOY500, 501 was the Leonard MG.

Just checked emails, have sold HWMs and not even on the website yet.

Hope you (all) had a good day out - Exeter is a bit too far for a Sunday jaunt for me at least although it does cater for my collecting habits in a big way so I might make it one day!

I have 16th December at Shepton in my diary, though still have to clear that with Mission Control...

Unless it is snowing I intend to be there too. I enjoy Shepton, meeting up with a lot of friends and generally spending money! I tend to climb the stairs to the Wessex Club's stand which is where I met up with Tony last time! Hopefully Mission Control will give you clearance for take-off...

The Exeter gang will definitely be at Shepton on the 16 December, and we look forward to meeting up with you all again. Hope Rod will be there too. I saw him at Exeter Westpoint last Sunday and was able to admire his excellent selection of Tony Smith models. Westpoint was a good toy fair and I was able to pick up a some interesting Mossie projects for Malcolm, as well as a bag full of very cheap Ferraris for my collection. As both Shepton and Westrpoint are now organised by the same people there should be plenty of interesting dealers. Make sure you ask Mission Control for an advance on your pocket money Malcolm.

As you say Sue much will depend on the weather. Two years ago it was pretty chilly and we arrived to find the Showground car park frozen, and cars sliding all over the shop. We managed to slither our way into the hall only for the phone to ring. It was my wife summoning me home as she had fallen on ice and broken her wrist.

When the weather is cold Shepton car park and the pedestrian access can be very icy especially if it has been raining overnight. The wind howls through the gap between the buildings and freezes everything solid. It was bad earlier this year too.

Oh yes, Malcolm, ensure you have pennies in your pocket as I never give loans!

And that's in the summer! :drunk:
The showground really is a benighted spot! Still at the Christmas Shepton they used to hand out a glass (well plastic cup) of sherry and a mincepie to the traders, wonder if they still do. Must remember to book it this time.

I wish they would hand out sherry, or better still brandy, to the queuing punters waiting in the cold for the doors to open. The entrance is always in shadow at that time of the morning. A bleak venue indeed. At least the Wessex boys always have a good supply of coffee on their stand.

Not wishing to put anyone off attending but it could be bitterly cold in the hall as well! Seemed a bit warmer on the balcony, heat rises and all that. Makes me think I should book for up there this time around, but then there's the hassle of dragging everything upstairs.

Should we be starting a Toy Fair thread?

This chat about Shepton is good fun for four of us, who happen to be - to some extent at least - fans of 1/43rd-scale Moss cars which is what, after all, tgis thread is supposed to be about.

Who knows, there might be some poor benighted Hawthorn fans out there who would also like to hear news about toy fairs and the happy hunting grounds they can be. Even for people who like Ferraris, God 'elp 'em.

Serious suggestion.

I think a toy fair thread with special coverage of Hawthorn Ferraris would be a brilliant idea. We do seem to have rather highjacked this thread with our plans for an outing to Shepton but I hope very much that other TNFs who share our interest may also come along. A good meeting place would be the Wessex Model and Toy Collectors stand up on the gallery at the Bath and West Showground where Barry Lloyd, their newsletter editor, is a TNFer and a great Moss and Vanwall enthusiast.

Getting back on thread I can reveal that we are currently working hard to find a paint stripper which can deal with Malcolm's Maserati 450s and 150s. Results will be posted very soon.

Just been outbid on eBay for this Moss Vanwall:

Posted Image

... but in fact not too dismayed - because it is wrong, is it not?

Surely the '57 car had spoked wheels front and rear and the alloy rear wheels were not introduced until 1958.

What I actually was planning to do was repaint this all green, #20 with no nose band, for the car in which Moss actually finished the 1957 British Grand Prix, as opposed to this:
Posted Image

which is the car in which he started.

The too-large air intake suggests that is in fact a recycled Brumm model, specifically their interpretation of Moss's 1958 Italian GP car. They took their basic poor casting and modified it for different races, changing numbers, nose colour, type of wheels and for the Italian GP car adding the nose scoop. But they did nothing about the poor basic model and made no effort to change the exhaust to the faired in 1958 version.
I'm still looking for an affordable replacement for my Brumm model.

After looking more closely at both the pictures (there is a similar Vanwall also on eBay, current minimum bid £5.00 and so far 0 bids) and my own '58 Brumm I entirely agree, Duncan.

And as for you, BB: have you yet found that Crescent Vanwall for which not so long ago you were searching?

Yes.

BUT, it has been mucked about with by a previous owner. I have begun un-mucking about with it but the cret... person had removed the exhaust pipes as well as doing other odd things to it.

One of these fine years I'll get around to doing something more to it.

Ah yes, Barry - I now recall your telling us about this when you got it.

In the meantime I received what eBay calls a '2nd chance offer' from the seller, telling me he had several more available (are we surprised).

Ever helpful ( :rotfl: ) I have sent this reply in declining: "... since bidding I have done some detailed reasearch and I'm afraid the model is wrongly described (on the box - not your fault). This is not a 1957 Vanwall: it is a 1958 Vanwall. Specifically it appears to be a re-issue of the Brumm model of Moss's 1958 Italian GP winner. One can tell it is not a 1957 Vanwall because of the wheels and the bonnet air scoop (which is too large, by the way). All '57 Vanwalls had wire wheels; only the 1958 cars had alloy rear wheels, as on this model. Up to you, of course, whether or not you continue to list it, but I can assure you it is emphatically NOT a 1957 Vanwall, Moss or otherwise."

Duncan - if he sues me I intend calling you as my expert witness.

Having been assured by the seller of the £5.00 model that 'the description is correct' I sent a similar reply to him. Wasting my time, I know - but it's been a slow day so far...

You can call me too.

Incidentally, I see that Racing Models, who currently hold about 300 of my models that they very occasionally sell one of, are advertising a Connew model on Facebook.

Not Racing Models' fault of course, but this model is so diabolical I can't believe anyone would pay £8 for it, let alone the £80 that's being asked.

Some recent additions, mostly courtesy of Tony L given that my own modelling abilities, never up to much in the first place, are currently ‘on hold’:
Posted Image (along with my photographic skills, it seems)

From an SMTS kit. Moss's 1956 Monacco GP winning Maser 250F. So at last I have a pre-57 250F.

Then we add this:

Posted Image

1953 Cooper Alta Special, from the K&R Replicas kit. When I first received the model I thought that Tony, with his well-known and inexplicable obsession with that big blonde from Farnham, had made a mistake and built a Cooper Bristol because this was not the car I was expecting (pages 92 and between 192 and 193 of My Cars..) and which we have seen (IIRC) at Goodwood. For this car you need to turn to page 94 (as they say in Private Eye).

Then there is this:
Posted Image

The Maserati 450s which Moss shared with Fangio the Nurburgring 1000km in 1957, which is actually a re-paint (at no little trouble – Tony says he had to use special graffiti remover to get it off, Nitromors wouldn’t look at it) of one of these:

Posted Image

Which is Cuban Grand Prix, I think Collins. Tony went to much trouble to find a headrest (eventually made from the top of a Biro!) but on close examination of the picture on p175 of Moss losing the left rear wheel it looks like the car may not have had one after all.

AND FINALLY...
This...

Posted Image

... stunning Tony Smith build of the SMTS Ferguson P90, bought from Rod Hunt at yesterday’s Shepton Mallet toy and collectors’ fair. I have not yet even had time to take it off its base and really examine it, but it is beautifully made. A real Collector’s Item, as they say.

Mind you, it took about four months’ pocket money to get it so I may go quiet for some time – but worth every penny.

Apologies for the poor standard of photography - but you get the picture. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Quizes are traditional at Christmas time, so here is your starter for 10.

Car, year, race, outcome... (it's a Mossie, of course).

Take a bow, Tim - and an extra bonus point for the picture, the which I had not seen before. It was bare aluminium, as Barry suggests. According to Tony another driver (Manzon? Fangio's protege?) rolled it in practice and a new, unpainted body had to be fitted overnight. Moss (or Doug?) does not mention this in My Cars.., only that Hans Hermann won in a works Porsche and that the pictured Cooper Climaxes gave a lot of trouble. Behra was eighth. There is no mention of the race in the Robert Edwards book that I can find and I do not (yet - there are still seven shopping days 'til Christmas) have All My Races.

I found that photo with quite a few others on this site - scroll down to the Competition Gallery section – 1956 Nürburgring:

http://www.ketchamim..._SI_2401_H.html

However, there's an interesting anomaly. That site thinks that the car is 200SI chassis 2401. I don't think this can be correct as the Nürburgring race restricted sports cars to 1500cc - race details and results here:

http://wsrp.ic.cz/gerscc1956.html#4

Anthony Pritchard's Maserati history says that the two works cars at the Nürburgring race were 150S's.

Oh yus, as that appalling dog would say. the race is on between it and the Tony Brooks book.

And BTW: Tony L emails me (for some reason he is having problems logging-on here) that it was not Manzon but the great Guiseppe Farina who rolled the car, on 24 June 1956. So presumably there was time between then and 5th August to get it back to the workshop and re-body but not repaint it.

I must say I thought that Farina retired in 1954 after being badly burned at Monza but this, from that infallible () source Wikipedia: " Farina attempted a comeback in 1955, dosing himself with painkillers and scoring a couple of points finishes. However, conceding defeat, he retired from Formula 1 at the end of the season. In 1956 he made a half-hearted attempt at the Indianapolis 500, crashing in the process, only to break his collar bone after a crash at a minor race at Monza. Again he recovered and tried the Indy 500, but this time his team-mate had a fatal crash while practicing in Farina's race car, and Farina decided to give up for good..."

The crash, presumably, was in this 150s. So my little model tells quite a story... Farina's last sports car race and then taken over by Moss.

Neat :)

http://www.ketchamim..._SI_2401_H.html

However, there's an interesting anomaly. That site thinks that the car is 200SI chassis 2401. I don't think this can be correct as the Nürburgring race restricted sports cars to 1500cc - race details and results here:

http://wsrp.ic.cz/gerscc1956.html#4

Anthony Pritchard's Maserati history says that the two works cars at the Nürburgring race were 150S's.

It would appear from this apparently complete history of the car:
http://www.ketchamim...01_Complete.pdf
that #2401 began life as a 150s and was then used to develop the 200s marque. The history also confirms that it was Farina who crashed the car in June. Not only that: Moss raced this very car again, but with the 2 litre engine and as a 200s, in the Cuban Grand Prix of February 1957, painted red and with race number 28. (There are pictures of it thus also on the site that your link goes to, Tim.)

So I can have another version of the same car, this time red and #28! Brilliant. By the time I'm done I shall have almost as many variants of this car as of Merc 300slr/04 (Mille Miglia, Le Mans, Dundrod, Targa Florio).

There remains one remaining question. Tony Lethbridge has a photo of the car in its bare aluminium scheme being loaded onto a trailer with Moss in attendance, presumably on its way to Nurburgring, with what appears a yellow emblem on the head rest fairing - but that does not appear in the pictures in the History document. Presumably that would have been a Shell badge, since Moss had his own contract with Shell? Interestingly the modern recreation/ restoration of the car as #32 has the same yellow emblem.

Excellent stuff, Malcolm - thanks. I still can't work out how its engine capacity varied during its life. The (less comprehensive) listing at Racing Sports Cars:

http://www.racingspo...r...[200S].html

implies that it was always a 2-litre, except for the Nürburgring race when (presumably) they dropped a 1.5-litre engine in just for the one race, but it's not very clear. Interesting too that it was the car in which Luigi Villoresi had his last race.

I always understood Moss had a personal contract with BP and not with Shell? It was BP that contributed to the purchase of his Maserati. It was BP who featured Moss on billboard adverts.

In the UK, Shell and BP had a joint marketing operation which allowed SCM to drive a [Shell-sponsored] works Lister and works BRM in Britain

So. Not a Shell sticker, then...

At last, found an old Brumm ’57 Vanwall with wire wheels on eBay:

A bit tired and with a broken windscreen (that the seller omitted to mention in his description and which I failed to notice in the photograph). It wasn’t in an auction but on a dealer’s site at £39.95 !!!. I haggled and he accepted £17.00 plus £3.00 P&P.

The paintwork was very dull and the numbers fairly yellow: the latter came off relatively easily and the paintwork polished up nicely with Farecla. I had to do some touching-in of the paintwork round the nose, and paint over the chrome rear-view mirrors. Humbrol dark green no 3 + Humbrol brown no 10 in about equal proportions give Brumm’s Vanwall green (which seems relatively close to Vanwall’s Vanwall green). The new numbers are Letraset: a fraction too big, but not really noticeable when the car is in the display case, even alongside its fellow. So I now have the two cars used by SCM to become the first Briton to win the British GP in a British car. Duncan, I know you don't much rate the Brumm Vanwall for accuracy - but beggars can't be choosers.

I have just finished Tony Brooks’ Poetry in Motion autobiography: he complains therein that he has never been given proper credit for his share of the win, saying that the stratagem of his even starting in the race (given his still un-healed Le Mans injuries) and driving conservatively so that Moss would have a reasonably-placed spare car should Moss’s break was his idea in the first place and was the plan all along. Instead he is generally dismissed as ‘the injured Brooks’. But then a mildly disappointing aspect of the book is that he complains quite a lot, about quite a lot – most usually about being treated unfairly.

I have never seen a Brooks Vanwall modelled – indeed I am not sure I have ever seen a Brooks GP car modelled, although there are several shared sportscars. Maybe he is the ‘invisible man’ after all.

Speaking of books, I also got All My Races. I had resisted buying it when it first came out, thinking there was nothing new in it and that it was just another squeeze of the old commercial lemon. But for this lark it really is good, not to say invaluable: I have already sub-titled it The Anorak's Handbook...

Happy New Year, everyone.

The only Brooks GP car I have seen was a British grazing green and red Yeoman Credit Cooper. I think there may have been a white metal Syracuse Connaught but I'm not sure.

As for the broken screen - the clear plastic stiffener from the shirt you got for Christmas or any clear plastic bubble pack will give you the source material to cut out a replacement screen using the existing one as a template, then use the wife's hairdryer and the neck of a whisky bottle (empty it first!) to mould it on and all you need then is some clear glue (the model shops sell one that won't dissolve the plastic but I think some ordinary glues are OK).

More rehab therapy...

I found it surprisingly straightforward to Mossify this Quartzo Chris Bristow Yeoman Cooper, bought for a fiver some time ago at, of all places, the Revival. They are still fairly common and I had thought to try and use it for a Walker car. Thanks to my new “Anorak’s Handbook” (aka All My Races) I found a picture of Moss in a Yeoman car and thought – have a go.

The ‘fin’ came off quite easily with just a quick twist, although it did bring some paint with it. The numbers were even easier to remove. I used the picture on p286 as my guide, and stuck a white vinyl roundel – one of a whole supply given me by Barry Boor – with a Letraset letter capital I as the race number for the Watkins Glen GP of 18th October 1959, the first time that I can see Moss drove a Yeoman Credit Cooper. Mixing the Yeoman green to touch-in the chipped paintwork was tricky: a combination of Humbrol green, pale cream and white.

I don’t normally go in for with-driver models, but when I started to take this apart to remove the driver I found that seat, driver and steering wheel are all one unit so decided discretion to be the better part of valour, put it all back again and settled for re-painting the helmet.

In All My Races it looks like there are no rear numbers, but I have now found a picture in My Cars... (p212) that clearly shows that I need to add another number I at the back.

All in all an unusual (unique?) Moss model for a fiver – it may not be completely accurate (the windscreen, for example – and the driver’s stance is not very Mossy at all) but – with apologies to Rod – that’s my sort of collecting!

In contrast this work of art is perfect in all respects. A Christmas treat to myself (via the aforementioned Rod) - which did cost a little more than a fiver. But it is beautiful...

Malcolm, I was just admiring the Mossy Cooper and thinking how much a dab of paint made Chris Bristow look like Stirling! I suppose it looks like him because I expect it look like him.
Happy New Year.

Does anyone know if the Yeoman Credit Coopers always had a thin red stripe along the tail?

I can find only black-and-white pictures: I do not have a copy of DCN's Cooper book - would there be a good colour picture in that of Stirling's first race in one?

Moss appears to have driven the car - a T51(?) - only twice: at Watkins Glen and then in New Zealand on January 9th, 1960. (http://www.sergent.c...motor/1960.html) .

And this site; http://www.reissorg....omancredit.html would appear to suggest that the answer to my question is 'yes': "The Yeoman Credit Coopers retained the distinctive "meadow green" B.R.P. livery already seen in 1959. In addition, for a reason I admit I don't know, noses together with a longitudinal stripe were painted in a bright red color..." yet in the previously mentioned picture in My Cars, My Career appears to show a plain tail.
