New Rio circuit layout

This circuit is the one to take Jacarepagua's place ( to be demolished).

Ext: 4.715,7m (biggest delineation) meets A grade by FIA standards

Has 19 turns with oval option; includes also a separated karting circuit (1.344m)

The project considers building a multisports complex within the area; designed by Artur Katchborian and Rio Automobile Federation.

Hey, Flexa, thanks for the new topic.
At first, I don't like this proposed layout, but the idea of a new oval in Rio (Indy back!) and maybe a MotoGP compatible track is exciting!
I'm surprised that Tilke was not involved.

I wish someone would make a circuit with only fast corners, like Thruxton or old Silverstone.

Seriously, though, it doesn't look like it has an overtaking spot F1 cars could use and the zig-zag section looks like lazy track designing.

It looks like somebody designed it using a slot car track that offered a choice of a straight section and maybe three different types of curved pieces. It looks awful.

That would be based on a guess, as we haven't enough info about the track straights yet.

is that serious? it looks like a child's draw. No inspiration whatsoever.

I've drawn it... well the image of the layout at least!

It looks like a fantastic 'roval' like at the old Jacarepagua where they did CART races combined with the Caeser's Palace track. It would certainly provide some interest in car setup but I wouldn't want to see it replace Interlagos as an F1 venue. As someone said, maybe a MotoGP venue (I'd imagine Interlagos is a bit dangerous for bikes) and maybe a permanent venue for the Brazil Indycar race (on the roval)

The new Rio circuit is in Deodoro, not in Jacarepagua.

Thanks for clearing that up. I knew that part of the Jacarepagua circuit had been demolished for housing, so I assumed that a new circuit was being built on the same site that made more efficient use of the space available. :blush:

By the way, I pass besides the circuit area every single day, so I may bring pictures of the construction site if this ever comes to reality.

I've overlap the height map with the satellite picture. There's some small elevation changes, but it's mainly flat.
One thing is for sure, these neighborhoods are worse than Interlagos.

2/3 of the lap is utter **** (looks like Le Mans Bugatti with so many short straights into slow corners) but then the part leading into and out of the oval is awesome.

I'm guessing it's anti-clockwise just like most ovals are, and the road course should follow its direction? Anti-clockwise the hairpin at the end of the main straight makes sense, clockwise it doesn't.

Also I'm not sure whether the main road course takes the fast sweepers within the oval layout or just uses the whole oval. That part of the lap looks great either way, so no issue with that.

Even with the chicane in place, the oval section looks nice and fast (assuming that it's large enough - if it's a small oval, it would be abysmal). Even the semi-chicane across the back section looks like it could be reasonably quick. But the final section just ruins the entire circuit. It's like a really bad version of Twin Ring Motegi. At least the straights at Motegi were of a reasonable length and you can carry a bit of speed into the corners.

To be sincere with you, I've no idea.
It looks it's just for aesthetics and cooling, as it's close to Avenida Brasil I think that's possible.

Double posting, but lets do it.

Reading more about the circuit [ link:pt-br ], it's clearly only a proposal by now, and the track design is only a conceptual draft for the moment. It can, and possibly will, be changed due topographic studies there weren't made yet.

By the way, this would be the very first project of a race track for the architecture company that made this draft.

That actualy doesn't look too bad imo. It's a nice diversion from the typical Tilke layouts that we get these days.

They should maybe remove one of the repetive kinks then we got a nice flowing layout with lots of fast corners.

For those that can read Portuguese, here is a link for the online magazine WarmUp with a more detailed article about the new circuit: [ WarmUp ]

- The image we have seen so far is not the project it self, it's merely a proposition.
- A consulter will be hired to help develop the race track.
- The venue most feature an oval, a long drag straight, the race course and an kart track.
- The whole project still subject to ambient analysis, that can cancels the project or completly change it.
- It must be self sustainable.
- Permanent installations would allow 28 thousand spectator plus space for temporary stand that could raise the capacity to 85 thousand people.
- The track will be part of a multisports park that wil also house a medical facility, an educational center, a shopping mall and a parking lot for 10 thousand cars.
- Estimated cost of R$ 100 millions (EUR 45 mil) for the race track and R$ 300 millions (EUR 135 mil) for the whole park.
- Estimated time to build is of 24 months.

I'd love to see an motorsport event at Olympics. 2016 Olympics are in a city where it could happen. Maybe there could be MotoGP and F1 events in back-to-back weekends during Rio Olympics.

They should resurrect A1GP for a weekend.


In Olympics every team and athlete has to represent a country, so A1GP might be the only series IOC would accept. Still, events of Rio Olympics Olympics have already been decided, so there's no hope of having motorsports as an official event. Anyway, my idea was to have F1 and maybe also motorcycle GPs in the host city of the Olympics if it's possible. The "Olympic GP" wouldn't be an official Olympic event but it would count towards F1 and MotoGP World Championships. Maybe also the proposed London street circuit could be realised for London Olympics. It wouldn't be a one-off race. UK deserves another GP, so after Olympics it could still host a GP. Of course, there wouldn't be a MotoGP race on a street circuit.

Impossible, there aren't enough hotel rooms in town.


That's a pity.

you would have to invite the road racers if you wanted a bike street race...

but a olympic + 2 top line motorsport events would be a huge event. chuck in some sports cars and a oval race too ;)

Well I'd like to see some sort of motorsport represented at the Olympics, but I can't see how it would be feasible to be frank. Unfortunately. :(

Too much of motorsport depends on the car itself. A1GP was about the closest you could get to Olympic motorsport.
