Maybe I missed something in earlier posts, but which car sales business was Ross Farmer involved in?

AFAIK Ross Farmer worked for Motors (Holden dealers) in Hobart. Was well known for taking 'suitable' cars from the used car lot to run in championship trials, and returning them to the lot afterwards. Not sure of his racing career though?
Could also mention Ray Long? When I first came to Tassie Ray Long Motors sold used cars I'm sure, as well as mechanical repairs.

Alan Caelli long time family friend ,I would say Alan at some stage owned or worked in the motor trade ,i think for a Ford dealer.
Alan is still alive, although these days is not the health he was.
Great life, married a few times, raced cars, horses, pawn broker, lived on canel boats in the UK/France and for a number of years lived on a motor boat at the St Kilda marina.
Last time i saw Alan about 5 years ago he had a Ferrari 365 .

Thanks Geoff. Being a NorWest Coaster, Hobart was at the end of the earth....

Mention of Ray Long reminds me. Add Bill McGregor of Bill McGregor Autos (early to mid 60s in Hobart) who raced the ex Ray Long Elfin in that period.

Brian Morrell, raced an Elfin in the 60s and still works occasionally for his son. He was a dealer himself for well over 20 years.

Rob, a bit O/T but I don't suppose you're related to Jim Saward?? I remember Jim organising a number of NWCC championship trials & rallies in the '70s, including the innovative Mersey Valley Rally.

I've had a go at separating them to a state by state listing...

And putting them in alphabetical order and dropping out the blokes who were in other occupations in the motor trade other than to do with car sales. Most of the list is, however, based on previous posts and there may be some I've missed or not dealt with properly.

I have also added a lot of names I've come across, though I have had to put a query against some and there's a little list at the bottom of 'uncertainties' and an unknown location. I have listed Brian Maguire under Victoria because I think he may have come from there.

Any changes needed, please advise and I will edit this post.

WA

Sydney Anderson
Eric Armstrong
Jack Ayres
Aub Victor Badger
Alf Barbagallo
Rod Donovan
Clem Dwyer
Jim Harwood
Don Hall
Wally Higgs
John Hughes
Ron Lindau
John Luscombe
Cyril Poole
Ron Posselt
Brian Rhodes
Gordon Stephenson
George Wakelin

Ray, here are some more West Australians;
Dave Sullivan
David 'Rockford'
Jim Percival
Stuart Campbell
Norm Scott
Max McCracken
Wally Knox
Warren Matthews
Tony McAlinden
Jim Brewer
Don Reimann was involved in interstate car procurement and sales in conjunction with Jack Brabham when Don lived in SA [ before he moved to WA.]
I don't know if it was a 'business' as such.
The following drivers were better-known in speedway but did have the odd start at Caversham;
Laurie Stevens
Geoff Stanton
Bill Jost

Okay, when I get around to it I'll add all these in...

Also W H Lowe, who seems to have been in the industry for a long time. He raced in the AGPs at Phillip Island and had a 250LM in the sixties, he was the Australian Ferrari agent at the time, but I don't think he's been mentioned in this thread before.

I have a few names to add to the QLD contingent:

Barry Tapsall raced one of the ex-works Datsun 1200 Coupes, then a 180B sport sedan and, IIRC, sold cars for Qld Datsun distributor, Ira Berk.

Both of the above cars ended up in the hands of Brian Power Junior who worked at the Datsun dealer on Gympie Rd Chermside, Brian Power Motors. His Dad, of course, raced openwheelers, incl. Renmax BN1.

I knew [and raced with] Des Wall in the late 70s. He was an earthmoving contractor then....when did he get involved in car sales? Are we talking about the same bloke?

Hi Greg,I First met Des when he was running a new white LJ torana GTR in aLap dash at Oran Park with the southern sporting car club in 1973, which incedently he rolled at Yamaha on his first run. Around 2006, I heard he owned or part owned,The South Coast Motor Group, which were the Dealers in Nowra For Nissan, Honda and mitsubishi.

Re: Jim Downie. I have been contacted by Jim's son for info about his father ( who, he says, rarely if ever mentioned anything about his motor racing  to his son). So far I have provided some photos, garage location on Parramatta Rd, residential addresses at Carlingford and Iluka, excerpts from Bathurst book -- but little more. Can any here contribute more?

You can add me. I did two years of rallying in the NSW Gemini Series (with a couple half-decent results), many years of motorkhanas, with some State and National championship class wins. Precisely one race meeting (in regularity) and many, many club events.

And I work in the Service department of a large Audi / Mitsubishi / Skoda dealer.

Of some interest to this thread:

0317frsomewhereulmmrsandbucklewithtriump

Bill Buckle Sr delivered this Triumph to Charles Ulm. Mrs Ulm is in the doorway with Bill Sr, I guess Bill Jr was at school?
