Not so far away in time, it seemed that Nico Hulkenberg’s career at Williams was secured, but according to some French F1 media : “ToileF1”, this is not the case.
Since a couple of weeks, it seems that Nico & Williams are struggling about the renewal of the pilot’s contract.

Besides a rather disappointing season in terms of achievements from the German, he seems to be pretty demanding salary wise for next season.
Being that, William’s finance are not at their best, nothing more is needed to think about replacing the paid GP2 champion, who was much weaker than the experienced Barrichello by someone else (It seems, by the way, that the Brazilian’s contract is set for next season with the Grove Base).

It is also “The Sun” which reports that Williams is seriously thinking to replace Hulkenberg next year. Two candidates are pointed out. First the new GP2 champion: Pastor Maldonado, who would bring with him 15 million dollars, and the second: Adrian Sutil, who would also bring around 3 million dollars, thanks to his personal sponsors.
William’s financial situation seems to be the most worrying one; it would like to hire a pilot who would cost nothing. The “Evening Standard” points out that the Grove teams is seriously indebted, and that since the last five years, Williams would have accumulated more than 9 million dollars in debts, meaning that the 2009 exercise was negative of several million dollars.

I don’t know, I was pretty happy about Nico’s first year Formula 1 career, and if it is the case of him loosing his driving for Williams, only because of the Grove Base enterprise’s difficult financial situation, maybe a shame?

What are your thoughts about the team's situation, and about the pilot's results ?

It's a very unfortunate situation, both for Hülkenberg and Williams. Barrichello may only race for one more season, and Hülkenberg has I think, shown enough promise to warrant another season as his team-mate. He was groomed for/by Williams and really should be their lead driver come 2012.

I started believing Williams were finally on the up, but if they're forced to take Maldonado, well...

Then again, they may be about to sign him as a third driver with an intention of racing him in 2012, which means Williams gets his sponsors, and Hülkenberg stays as he deserves.

Notwithstanding it is very difficult, with no testing, for rookies these days, I was a little bit underwhelmed by Hulkenburg in the first half of the season. He has looked a bit better in the second half and has started to show some of the promise that he showed in A1GP and GP2.

I commented in the "Silly season" thread that it is a shame that a team like Williams appear to feel it necessary to take on a pay driver. Maldonado may prove to be a fantastic F1 driver but at this stage nothing indicates to me that he is a better bet than Hulkenburg.

It is the sign of the times, I suppose, but if you are a rookie in F1 you need to shine immediately or bring substantial sponsorship. I don't like it but when it costs hundreds of millions a season for a team to be just to be semi-competitive, it is hardly a surprise.

Maldonado won the title in his 4th season up against lots of new guys, Hulkenberg won in his debut season by a big margin. Maldonado still crashes a lot as well. Hulkenberg is far far better.

If there are debts to be paid though, surely Pastor's 15 mil could wipe them out in a stroke, and then still have some left over to go towards the team's budget? Hulkenburg isn't finished in F1 surely but you can't discount another GP2 champion as a Deletraz-esque pay driver, even if he did take 4 years to get a title Nico only needed one for... perhaps Nico has a year on the reserve bench, like Alonso and Massa have in the past?

He hasn't been anywhere near as impressive as I thought he'd be this year I have to say, and if Williams are struggling then it would make sense to dump someone who only takes away money and achieves mediocre results for someone with heckuva lot of cash which would help the team immensely.

Team always comes first.

Surely the very example of Hulkenberg struggling, Petrov struggling, and Kobayashi doing well are enough pointers to show that your performance in GP2 has little relevance when it comes to F1?

Personally I don't see why Maldonado would be a better guy than Hulkenberg, but then, if Hulkenberg really is asking for a pay rise then he or his agent (Wili Weber?) needs to look in the mirror.

Its about the whole financial state of affairs with F1 and the surreal costs involved, it's ridiculous and needs to be changed and I don't mean the FIA's way with caps, the whole foundation is simply wrong when billion dollar turnover can't be shared by the actual entertainers (more the fools them too).

"Pilots" operate aircraft by the way, in English, "Drivers" drive cars.

This rumour has been doing the rounds for the last fortnight. Williams have been on the precipice of financial trouble for a few years now and if cutting Hulkenberg and taking on a pretty good pay driver in Maldonado will help steady/correct the ship, then that is the way they should go. Maldonado is in the same league as Buemi and Alguersuari IMO and Hulkenberg hasn't exactly been Hamiltonesque in his rookie season.

Williams is the new Tyrrell.

Missed their golden chance with BMW.

These days it is too easy and tempting to cash $20-25 mln by pairing two paydrivers, but this is the road to nowhere.

Hulkenberg did OK as he has a good chance to overtake Petrov in the standings by the end of the season, with Vitaly driving a capable car.

Maybe, but isn't this a short term commitment, as if Maldonado doesn't prove himself good, all the money he brought will be eaten up, and the what about the team. No results no own sponsors, no team !
It is the sickness of the sport that probably made Nico hungry about money, aren't tey all ?
I sincerely believe that Williams is here only thinking about short term commitment, and their money problem doesn't allow them to invest into a young driver for more than a year. Not good for F1, not good for the public, not good for us...

Hulkenberg s first half off the season was just awfull... Not that bad in qualifyings, but with very poor pace in race... Only Petrov was doing worser... From Canada, Nico s race pace finally improved, but still it wasn t consistently better then Rubens... There were only 4 races, where Nico s race pace was better then Rubens - Monza, Sepang, Montreal and Hungaroring...

I don't think taking the GP2 champion for his sponsors would make him a paydriver. Hulkenberg is a good driver, but not the new Rosberg.

It would be sad if a team like Williams has to make a driver decision based on money though.

EDIT: And when will sponsors start supporting real talent?.. :)

May have missed their chance to make a bit of money, but for the team it was the right decision. Just look at the mess BMW left Sauber in.

If your taking a driver purely on the money he can bring then he is a pay driver.

Regardless of how good the driver has/hasn't been demanding money from SFW will not go down well - he won't be held to ransom and will not sign a driver if such demands are being made.

I was shouted down in another thread for saying this, and I sadly stand by this analysis of my beloved team.

When a multiple world championship winning squad are considering pay drivers to make ends meet, it is the end of the line.

In Australia, if I remember correctly, he escaped from a huge accident created by Samouraï Koba, and I don't remember Hulk making such an idiot error as Rubens did in Spa on the wet in his 300th GP's !
Williams is far from its delirent years 80's with Piquet and M. Moustache Mansell, sadly enough.
I still believe that Williams is not anylonger one which will sustain the stress of Formula 1 money pressure, unfortunately, but still believe that they should keep Hulk for the sake of bein consistent, and continuously believe that they took the right decision by choosing him last year, but hey, I'm a dreamer...

Comparing this year's rookies with Hamilton or Rosberg just shows how ignorant some people are. Lewis and Nico had massive amounts of testing before entering F1. That is just not possible anymore. I think Hulkenberg has improved quite a lot during the season, and as he gets more experience you could only expect him to get better. Considering his potential, it would be foolish of Williams to let him go. But then again if they've really messed up their finances, then I don't know if they've got much choise. That I do know, that Maldonado is nowhere near the level of Hulkenberg. They were team mates in GP2.

1) For a minute I've thought that the season was based in points, right? And we were talking about drivers' performance so far. I'm not ranking them, I'm not saying someone bins it all the time, I'm just bringing the actual race results in order to avoid "driver x had a good mid-season" vs "driver x was nowhere at the time" kind of discussions.

2) Small mistake, it's fixed by now.

May have missed their chance to make a bit of money, but for the team it was the right decision. Just look at the mess BMW left Sauber in.

BMW left F1 abruptly due to the crisis in 2009. Williams' relations with Dr. T soured by 2005. In theory Williams had four seasons to work with BMW and it could be really good, considering BMW had to invest heavily in Hinwil facility.

And it was never late to switch to Cosworth.

There is a slight chance Williams will improve due to its fancy KERS system, but Williams' renaissance is the story of every midseason.

A sad case, really. Something is broken in F1 if a team like this has to downgrade to another Tyrrell.

That was the way I understood it. Thought it was a cleaver approach to show who is who today...
I also think (nothing to do w/ the a.m.), that Williams is not anylonger "The" Williams we knew. Frank is not anymore "The" leader he was, therefore, today's trends are taking over without his strong force of persuasion and "clairvoyance".

Mistakes were made, but BMW wanted to buy a team and Williams wouldn't sell. The crisis would still have happened regardless.

In don't know, unfortunately living here, I can tell you, Germans are pretty radical, and F1 is not influencing their car sales...hybrid engines yes.
But it's not the subject...My question : who thinks that Williams is bound to disappear, and who really will trully care, as it is not anylonger one of the teams that people are interested in ? I'm afraid they are already part of history ?

I don't know how much F1 really influences anyone's car sales, but Merc seem happy to stay. BMW wanted out because they were not winning.

I wonder how much longer FW and PH will want to stay in the sport. What are their plans for selling up and/or handing over the reins.

They must be feeling a bit sick as I'm sure they and MS thought they were going to be defending the crown this year.

Some numbers:

Hulkenberg s average gap on Barrichello in qualifying: /combination of Q1+Q2+Q3/ = + 0.079 s
Hulkenberg s average gap on Barrichello in race /12 races counted/ = + 0,283 s

So, Nico is more a good qualifyier then a racer at the moment...

There's another one on my hard drive with a pair of girls in a rather compromising situation in a kitchen: the caption reads: OH LOOK - cupcakes. [there are a box of them on the counter]

Welcome to the 'wonderful' world of Tufty's humour :p

Right on Dude, but it's not the chicks I was looking @, it was the little white patch, heck, no luck I had, so I turned onto the nice ladies (sweet they are, and yummy)
"She's a bit**, she's a bit**" ! "Well, how do you know whe's a bit**" ? "Euhhh ? She looks like one, yeah...she looks like one", Yek !
