All drivers have good & bad luck over their careers. Every champion needs some luck. Good on Alonso for having some recently. Complaining about it is sour grapes pure & simple. When the history books document past champions they don't include a footnote saying "he got lucky"

I follow Webber, often dubbed the "unluckiest driver in F1" from 2001-2008. Finally he has some good fortune this season & his knockers rant about how lucky he's been. It's pathetic.

This.

-Montreal's bad luck with back markers.

Sometimes I wish people could give credit to drivers (to any driver) when they do things right instead of making excuses to not congratulate them when they do a good job.

One can say that Hamilton was very lucky to start his career in a WDC/WCC winning car with a double champion doing the hard work (feedback, set-ups...), we can play this game all day but at the end every driver have his share of good and bad luck.

You are mixing bad luck and mistakes

Monaco was a mistake but also really bad luck, with that kind of crash the chaces to damage the chassis are very small.

I don't know what all this "luck" is coming from....
Isn't there a saying "The best are usually the luckiest" "The luckiest allways win" or something close to that, it's just an excuse because person "X" isn't in the same position as person "Y".

I consider luck a trait, looks like alonso at this point of the championship is the best.

He sure does seem very lucky. All the time.

Wonder how much is random luck, and how much is luck of his own making.

Who knows, but thank god he's driving a Ferrari :D

Sounds like another Fernando bash thread... :well:

Yeah, too many crappers here.

People bashed Alonso when he commited mistakes early in the season. And Germany happened for a reason, plus wins at Monza and Singapore; threads like "will you be happy to see Alonso win the title since he was gifted 7 extra points" had already started. Now the championship isnt finished, we have crappers with threads like these. Where is the credit when its due, all we se are haters around here who cant even acknowledge a rival's great drive.

Fernando and Ferrari has come back from nowhere mid season to lead the championship two races to go. Its simple beyond some people's wildest dreams, because they thought Lewis the driver of century would be leading, but no he isnt; Vettel with all his speed isnt, Webber crashed, Hamilton crashed, Alonso has crashed this season. TIME TO WAKE UP, Alonso is leading the championship.

The same people who use morals and ethics to condemn the incident in Germany, hide behind the very same curtains like cowards when beaten fair and square over and over again.

Of course he is but the thread is not about that. The thread is about his luck. Don't get me wrong, I think he's been driving well for the last few races but if you look at his 5 victories we can see that besides being gifted in germany he inherited two others. So, the thread makes sence.

if alonso wins the WDC which is what's likely at this point, he will be a very deserving champion, just like in 2006. Still, i can't help but feel a bit for the other contenders. But its just the way motorsport goes. I wish Will Power won Indycar as well, but these things happen. It's all part of the game.

"The more I practice, the luckier I get." (Gary Player)

This sums it up beautifully...

No person is naturally inclined to be lucky. Luck is what happens when events out of your control happen to be to your advantage. It evens out over a period of time.

Sometimes what seems like luck is nothing of the sort... it is the driver's skills that put him in a position to take advantage of a situation.

I don't really see any argument that Fernando Alonso has had a balance of "luck" in his favour this year - but even if he did, there are no grounds for arguing that ALL the MANY successes of his career are down to luck.

The man can drive, and the man can think.

You mean like Prost?

Seriously, he may have had luck this time against Vettel but he beat all the other drivers and
Webber crashed due to his own mistake. Is that luck too?

Still beats the crap of not knowing how to warm up your tires.

Hamilton should have won the Korean GP after the Ferrari pit mistake. Alonso did not lose control, drove better and won.

Get real, the McLaren was at best 3:rd quickest car this weekend in the dry. In the wet they had even more
problems. Button was fighting with STR for position...

Alonso the inheritor?

Let's not forget that EVERYONE gained a place when Vettel retired - so I guess they're ALL inheritors. It's silly to try to tarnish Alonso's achievement in this race by implying he somehow didn't deserve it because Vettels engine blew. FA was in the best place to gain from Vettels retirement - you can hardly slag him for that.

Ultimately I wouldn't say that Alonso was "lucky" as much as Vettel was VERY unlucky.

Melbourne this year Vettel also had a motor problem and Alonso got the win. For the thread to make sense, it would be far better to have all races where Alonso inherited victories due to technical problems of other cars and races where Alonso did not win a race due to technical problems. Just naming two races isn't a very good opening post.

And just maybe the more experienced drivers don't like to kerb hop, change down early etc giving up a little time here and there as well as many other tricks learnt over the years that destroy cars under others, sometimes the same car. There are a lot of things you shouldn't do constantly in a fragile at the limit F1 car and I see Vettle doing them and Alonso doesn't. If you drive it at the limit all the time chances are you will win and chances are it will break occasionally and that includes tyre management.

Being a WDC also involves getting to the finish as well as getting there fast.

This is Alonso bash thread with many haters trying to find excuses for his great drive, but that doesn't mean you can troll. Button is usually a good measure of how good the car is, and McLaren was horrible today, Hamilton could not do better than 2nd with this car today even without his error.

Not to mention that Alonso list his place to Hamilton with his own mistake so I guess that makes them even in mistakes today.

In fact, some Hamilton Fans said he would lead the race after a few laps when the race started :well:

Exactly. Hamilton has superhuman wet driving skills and the Mclaren is a speedboat on wheels.

Lewis should have won the race after Ferrari's pit mistake. However, Alonso made no mistakes and drove to win. It was not his fault Webber crashed or Vettel fried his engine.

But that clearly wasn't the case, was it? You don't honestly think Jenson is suddenly 4 seconds off the pace? The car was clearly rubbish.

Well, neither do I hope you believe Hamilton is suddenly 4 seconds faster than Button on skill, in those conditions? After what we've seen earlier in the year?

However good or bad the car in general, I think it's obvious that Button had some unique and specific problems today, so he's, for once, pretty much useless as a gauge for the cars performance.

Not necessarily. As Button himself said, he was suffering massive tyre wear, but at the same time unable to get heat and grip into the tyres. Unless of course you are accussing him of making that up. From actually watching the race it was clear from both starts that the McLaren was taking a few laps to get up to speed compared to the Red Bulls and Alonso at the front, which would tend to indicate an issue with bringing the tyres into operating temperature. Seems that whenever 'poor Hamilton' is involved in anything you throw a flakey. Perhaps try and be a bit more balanced and it would negate pointless arguements arising from your childish bitterness towards one of the best racing drivers in the world? ;)

Sure, what else could it be but bitterness that's making me laugh at suggestions how Hamilton drove a wheelbarrow onto the podium today. :D

Herp derp.

Alonso lost 10 points in Hungary 2006 due to a wheel nut and another 6 in Monza 2006 due to engine failure. That's SIXTEEN POINTS LOST.

Schumacher lost his 10 in Suzuka. TEN POINTS LOST. Schumacher lost his other points due to crashing: Australia and Hungary. Alonso didn't make a single mistake all year that ended his race.

Alonso has had his share of luck but i think since pretty much since 05 every champ has had some luck.

2005 - unreliable macca helps alonso

2006 - shuey engine going in suzuka help nando

2007 - hamiltons gearbox issue in brazil helps kimi.

2008 - massa engine going in hungary or the infamous singapore "fixgate" helps lewis

2009 - unreliable RBR plus driver errors help JB.

To win the title you do need a bit of luck

In 2006 Alonso got lucky? I remind you Alonso and Schumacher had the same number of retirements due reliability or car problems.

About this thread, sour grapes  But keep it coming. :p

Suzuka 2006 was an amazing race from him. From memory he was behind both toyotas and both ferraris off the startline, yet by the end of the all pitstops he was a handful of seconds behind schumacher and catching him, forcing ferrari to push extra hard and arguably contributed to his engine failure.
