17 I think, but very embarrassed not to get Von Trips' nickname !! Have to say that was the weakest Mastermind field I've ever seen. Two people got 3 pts and 5 pts on their expert subject FFS !!

But going through again now (and not cheating myself) I got 14

Now, if it had been 1950-1970...

They wouldn't let me do any form of Grand Prix Racing for my specialist subject when I was on the program in 1993 because someone had done a motor racing subject in the previous series. I ended up doing the "History of the Swiss Confederation 1291-1849" and then "the China Clay Industry in Cornwall from 1745" in the semi-final.

I can't remember the year when we had motor racing as a specialist subject in New Zealand Mastermind but these were the questions.

Topic: Grand Prix Motor Racing, the years 1960 to 1970

1. Who was the oldest driver to win a race in this period?

2. In what race were rear-mounted aerofoils first used?

3. Monaco was the shortest circuit used during this period, what was the next shortest?

4. McLaren, Hulme and Amon all drove in Grand Prix in this period, name one other New Zealander.

5. What was the points difference between Hill in first and Clark in second place in the 1962 World Championship?

6. What was the last Grand Prix Stirling Moss won?

7. The 1961 British Grand Prix was held at what venue?

8. The last front-engined car to start a Grand Prix was in the 1961 British Grand Prix, what make was it?

9. Jack Brabham was disqualified from the 1960 Monaco Grand Prix for what reason?

10. Who was the youngest driver to win a race in this period?

11. How many races did Dan Gurney win in this period?

12. The fastest race run in this period, at an average of 236.8 km/h was which event?

13. The youngest driver to score championship points was aged 20 years and 113 days when he finished fourth in the 1962 Belgian Grand Prix. Name him.

14. What make of car did Fred Gamble drive in the 1960 Italian Grand Prix?

15. At 507.6 km it was the longest race in this decade. Which was it?

16. Who was the Lotus team manager in 1961?

17. Within this decade what was Bandini’s first Grand Prix race?

18. What was the time of the winning margin in the 1960 Italian Grand Prix?

19. Name the driver who raced under the name Geki.

20. Pedro Rodriguez drove in the last race won by a Cooper. Name the race.

21. Who drove the third works Cooper in the 1960 British Grand Prix?

The contestant, Mark Holman, correctly answered 9 questions, got 5 wrong and passed on 7.

I much surprised myself by getting 16 correct.
I didn't know Number 8 and guessed incorrectly.

Which was the "trick" question referred to above?

(That is the only episode I can remember seeing from which I did better - slightly - than the eventual winner in both 'halves' of the quiz. The general knowledge questions, especially the winner's, just happened to hit the spot for me.)

The questions posted by Milan, from the NZ version, look very much more difficult to me.

Does anyone know where one might find the questions from past series might be found? I can't find them on the BBC site. One contestant chose the other subject I might have attempted - the 'Samson novels of Len Deighton - but I missed the episode. (This was in the 'current era', not the Magnussen days.)

I was the guilty party who set the questions (and they were checked by someone else)
When I watched the programme go out, to my horror I realised he'd answered a question correctly, but was given "wrong" - entirely my fault
I didn't know him, but wrote a grovelling letter of apology
He still speaks to me

Number 14. Two variables - 1960s and BRM. I think he answered without listening to the last part of the question as he said four.

Well that might just be a case of blissful ingorance for me... I could recall the two Lotus wins and subtracted from 5.
But all of his Monaco wins were in the 60s, surely, so wouldn't 4 have been equally wrong?
I'm being notably more dense than when I watched the programme, because I fear I'm still missing the point here, Richard!

I've often wondered what happens in this situation. Is the contestant allowed to challenge an answer that he or she knows to be wrong, or does one just button one's lip and press on?

I came out with 'five' before listening to the whole question.

Not sure about Mastermind, but you could certainly challenge answers on 15 to 1. It happened during the one I was on. Can't remember what the question was, but the answer they wanted was "white noise". The contestant offered "shash": Bill Stewart initially said it was wrong, much to the consternation of the contestant, who was on his last life in the first round and challenged it on the grounds the terms were interchangeable. The recording was stopped and after some consultation they agreed to accept his answer, so everything was reset to after the previous question and they re-recorded it.

Happened on my go as well. The person setting the questions was in the booth over looking the studio above the high numbers. I am sure people have challenged questions on Mastermind, but the arrangement seems to be that one does it afterwards and the score is corrected. Not like Susi Dent and her book of invented words on Countdown, which also happens to ignore other common words.

I was on Mastermind in the Magnusson era and can confirm that contestants are allowed to challenge an answer. It happened in my heat (over a music question in the General Knowledge round) and resulted in some discussion because the question was ambiguous. In the end, Magnus asked us, the other competitors, whether he should allow the guy's answer. He was doing very badly, so we let him have the point.

I'm not sure if it is still the case, but in my time - 1993 - you could tell whether some such incident had happened during a question set because only then would you see a close-up of Magnus reading a question. The director needed the cut away to cover the break in continuity.

It's more a question of camera angles. If there is a cut to a different angle just before a question i would summise that there was an interuption of some sort. A friend of mine went to a filming of Mastermind and it took over 3 hours to complete the one episode.

I went to the recording of an episode of "This Is Your Life" when Michael Aspel hosted it and it took one minute longer to record than transmit, he made one small error which he then automatically corrected without any of the production staff getting involved.

I have to confess to getting them all, much to the other halves disgust, who kept saying "can't you answer them in yor head", which I found impossible!

Many years ago I was auditioned for Bob Monkhouse's "64 Thousand Dollar Question". Weeks later I was told I wouldn't be needed as the production company had been told by the NMM at Beaulieu that the best person to set the question for a round on the worlds land and water speed records would be, me! I wouldn't have minded!!!

Of course not, Robby. I did actually recheck the programme and he announced his subject as "Grand Prix racing 1960-80". Here in Pedantryland we all know that what he meant was "Grand Prix motor races which were part of the FIA World Championship for Drivers 1960-80".

Never did like nickname questions, as they usually depend on which papers you read.
Agreed it had a couple of weak contestants - their subjects were broader than they expected, one feels.
And, it seemed to me, there were very unbalanced General Knowledge questions between the two that had done well in the first round.

<<extreme pedantry alert...>>

Leaving aside the obvious GP/F1/WDC/non-WC "definitions conundrum" which may possibly blight a couple of those MM questions - Q1 asked 'which car' not 'which marque' so I contend the answer should be a little more detailed than just 'Lotus'...

Seems a shame that such a supposedly erudite programme should have joined the trend for interchanging GP/W(D)C/F1; if we are talking about races pre-81, surely 'Formula 1' was still a prescription for a class of car, not the name of a wholly distinct sport as it now seems to be. Not many of those questions were actually about 'Formula 1' as it then was. The 're-branding of history' to suit the marketing needs of subsequent commercial interests has been discussed here in relation to USAC/CART/Indycar etc, but when definitions are revised or ignored within a wholly historical context it just seems wrong - even without the possible future confusion over non-WC F1 races and non-F1 WC races. But perhaps it doesn't matter.
