Some years ago in a second hand sale I acquired tankard, it's silver plate, pint stamped 1937 and bears the following inscription:

J.C.C.
Members Day
Donington 1938
Four Lap Race "B"
3rd
C.V. Wells
(Triumph)

I can't find any information about this event, or C.V. Wells. Does anyone know if records exist of Junior Car Club events from this period?

Boddy's Donington book mentions VSCC, SS Car Club and United Hospitals MC club meetings in 1938, but nothing of a JCC members' meeting

Which does not mean it didn't happen

Boddy does say at the start of his 1938 'round-up' chapter that a number of clubs had held race meetings at Donington Park in 1938, 'some of the results of which are given herewith', so by his own admission not a comprehensive listing.

A JCC Members' Meeting was held at Donington on 23rd July 1938.
According to my notes I have a copy of the programme - will look it out when I am back home.

There were JCC meetings in 1938 too; members' meetings were much smaller affairs

Motor Sport weren't that keen on Donington Park at the time. Apparently Donington were placing restrictions on commercial photography and insisting that magazines only used race pictures from the track's authorised agency snappers - which were of course more expensive. Motor Sport retaliated by cutting their coverage back and not reporting some meetings at all.

"Motor Sport" carried far less race results at this time than "Speed" The details you seek are in the review of "British racing results 1938" in the December 1938 issue of "Speed" (and probably in the August issue, which I do not have).

The event was the JCC (Midland Centre) meeting on July 23rd 1938. After a high speed trial there were a number of handicap races. The four-lap handicap was run as two heats and a final. The final was won by G Tyrer (847cc MG) from C.V.Wells (1,991cc Triumph) in second place and J.Martin (1,496 cc FrazerNnash) in third place.

This suggests that the prize you have is for one of the two heats rather than the final.

Speed 1 Motor Sport 0

Tinytim,

The JCC Donington meeting on 23rd July 1938 was organised by the Midland Centre of the JCC.

My marked up programme shows No. 28 C.V. Wells 1991cc as finshing third in the Four Lap Handicap B behind Follett in a Railton and Burton in a Talbot.
This is surely the result for which your trophy was awarded.
If you can provide an e-mail address I would be happy to send you a scan of the programme.

Thankyou very much for your efforts, it just goes to show how lots of info isn't available on the internet. Who would have guessed that you would have a marked-up programme for what was quite an obscure event. My e-mail: tinytim1957@btinternet.com
