One size fits all so it's 1pm at Ted's on Saturday too? May not be quite as highbrow as Friday as it is one of the 'people's days' so as to speak (perish the thought! ) but at least there will be no embarassment attached to an inability to count rivets (or anything else efficiently for that matter.............) :smoking:

A proper list of exhibitors might have persuaded me to go -

An excellent day spent with enjoyable company. I have to say that most of my visit was spent renewing acquaintances and chatting, rather than studying the exhibits, but I left with the impression that it was better than last year with something for everyone. Although time was spent browsing the bookstalls, I managed to resist adding to the library. Thanks to Mr Rainford for conveying a group of us in comfort from Cheshire. Delighted to meet Tim Murray for the first time.

Indeed ...........a pleasure to meet Tim at last

Have to say following Mr Cox around the Show was akin to a Royal Walkabout; he seemed to know everyone

The Show for me was a vast improvement on last year

Mr Cox, how did you escape me today? Mr Rainford was under orders to make sure you didn't leave the building until I'd met you.

Oh well, 2012 then...

Gentlemen, I'm touched. I was also extremely pleased to make your acquaintance.

I can say in their defence that as soon as I'd told Alan and Phil that they might find you and Roger taking sustenance in the cafe they set off to try to find you, but were obviously too late.

I enjoyed myself with my family today and there was plenty of cars to see.

I had a nice time looking through the autojumble hall, scrumming through books and magazines which I enjoy the most. My son (who is only 11 months) enjoyed looking at the old motorbikes and the historic rally outside the Hall.

Of course I went to the Birmingham Superprix tribute stand and I had a quick look around and met Dave Lucas who organised the stand.

Sorry I missed it. Phil offered me a seat in the car, but sadly work took priority. Maybe next year.

Great to see the ever helpful Ted @ Ferret for the first time this season today, and also Pullman99 / Ian Robinson & David Beard on his way to a Lotus love-in!
Busy as hell today; it took me over an hour to get from Stoneleigh village to the parking. :well:

Two rather different Elvas..................

I was there at 1.00 pm. I asked Ted Walker if there were any other TNFers about, and he said that someone else had just asked him the same question, but when he looked around he couldn't spot this other person. A few more TNFers turned up a few minutes later. Sorry to have missed you.

The number 6 Elva in Giraffe's pictures had been converted to Porsche power (rather crudely in my opinion) in the USA, and had made its way to the UK via Germany. There were several Elva Porsches in period and also George Follmer's Lotus 23 Porsche. I have often thought it would add to the general interest if someone tried it in historic racing today. Has it not been done because

a) you can only do it if your chassis ran with a Porsche engine in period
b) you can only do it if you use the 4 cam Porsche engine that was used in period (hugely expensive apparently; the vendor of the Elva at the show was quoted 140k euros), or
c) the development of Lotus twin cams over the intervening period has negated the power advantage the Porsche engine had back in the sixties

I would be interested in your thoughts.

Regards,
Steve

I heard that Barry as I was stuck for approximately 80 minutes in it! The problem was that vehicles were getting bogged down in the carpark due to conditions caused by overnight rain. Car owners were being advised to dump their vehicles and "not to worry" they were being shifted about by tractor! I was fortunate as just as I approached the gate they shut it and I was shunted down to the VIP carpark at the main gate which was hard standing.
Whilst there are many reasons for me to return to Stoneleigh today (I only live 28 miles / 40 mins away & was offered a free pass), I have decided not to risk it and to stay at home. :well:

I got stuck attempting to extricate my car - huge thanks to the three pushers who helped me out - from a slight slope (and I was being ever so gentle with the clutch) but the tractors by late afternoon had been told not to help as they were causing further problems. I did see one tractor itself stuck but another was helping a 4WD Audi A6! Shades of South Bank at Brands! Maybe I should've had some Pirellis on?

Anyway. Great show and nice to meet up with Giraffe, Ted Walker, and Andrew Kitson. Nice as well to see Baby Bertha.

And, blimey, is it really 25 years since the first Birmingham Superprix? The Museum of Science & Industry in Birmingham was asked to parade their "Blitzen" Benz earlier in 1986 and wanted to contrast this with a current racing car to help promote the event. I arranged with Bridgestone to loan them one of the 1985 Ralt RB20s of Mike Thackwell and they had this in the museum for several weeks.

Posted Image

Interesting to find one of the 1995 Simteks tucked away too.

Posted Image

One of the art section stands had this beautiful model of Bluebird CN7 along with some nice paintings of Donald Campbell and the Bluebird K7 boat.

Posted Image

Crosthwaite and Gardiner had a very interesting stand too that featured a pic of the newly recreated Dymaxion car built for Lord Foster. They also have the original car currently being retored for the National Automobile Museum (formerly Harrah's in Reno) and one of their staff described it as "a hell of thing to move around the workshop" with some 18 turns lock to lock. The architect Buckminster Fuller wasa a pioneer of geodesic structures and wanted to apply his concepts, which he referred to as "Dymaxion", to automotive applications - hence the car which is built on a Ford V8 chassis but with the engine in the rear. I was invited to a reception to mark the opening of an exhibition at the Manchester Museum on the work of Norman Foster in 1985 and when I met him, knowing of his interest in Buckminster Fuller, mentioned that I had recently seen the Dymaxion car at Reno and he was most interested to learn that one of the cars was still in existence.

Posted Image

Octane feature on Dymaxion

Russell Brookes and the Andrews Heat for Hire Talbot Sunbeam Lotus are always good value. Stayed to watch the rally stage, with commenatry from Tony Mason, in the afternoon sunshine.

I was short of spare change for the H&H catalogue does any one recognise this Group C car ?

I thought it was a Sehcar and have since eliminated Argo, Alba, ALD, Gebhardt & EMKA from the list, it's certainly not a Nimrod or the Gipfast DPLM, so I imagine the Aston sticker on the nose may not be a useful clue.

Glyn, the tree seemed fine - just shook a bit during the impact - but the car wasn't travelling THAT quickly. Some muttering among the Meeja that a Proper Benz would just have reversed and carried on.

I also notice from Alan's posting of the full auction results that this abomination is still up for sale........

Might be handy to have as a set of spare bodywork if you've got the actual car I suppose...

Incidentally, as there's recently been a thread about Cheetah designer Chuck Graemiger, does anyone know what happened to the original car? IIRC, it was around in Interserie or German Supercup races at the end of the 80's but I don't know where it went after that- I don't think it's ever turned up on the historic Group C racing scene
