Hello,

Proton is involved in F1 with Lotus.

But did they also have any other racing ambitions? Especially in Formula racing? Were there any involvements in formula racing? In other categories?
I know they are involved in Rallye racing, but more?

Was there not a 'one make' saloon championship in the UK a few years back ? I sem to remember something like it, possibly containing current WTCC ace Robert Huff....
Or am I mistaken ?

Proton's three years in the British Touring Car Championship don't seem to made much of an impact!

There was a Proton Coupe Cup in the UK in the late 90s. It got absorbed into the Super Coupe Cup (with a lot of other one-make series that were no longer manufacturer supported) and some of the cars still appear every now and then in various saloon races around the UK.

Before the BTCC effort with the Impians there was a Satria GTi that was run occasionally in class B (the ex super production cars). I don't think it had any works involvement; I think TH Motorpsort ran it but OTTOMH I can't remember who for.

There were heaps of Proton Satria GTIs that raced in Aussie production car racing over the last 10 years or so.

The older Satria's were Mitsubishi engines [and the cars better finihed Mirages] so most development was advailable.

Damn i thought I had finally managed to erase the memory of watching a round of the Proton Coupe championship at Croft. Possibly the most tedious 20 minutes ever. But it felt much longer....

The day I came closest to quitting marshalling was when the final race at Brands featured a 10 car grid of Protons. May I suggest that the word Proton should not be used in a forum dedicated to Motor Racing.

Jeremy McWilliams put the Proton/Modenas three-cylinder 500 on pole at Phillip Island in 2002. Kenny Roberts had a decent season on it in 1998, too, with a front-row start and a 6th place in Germany, and a number of top-ten finishes. Think that was mostly down to Junior, though.

TH Motorsport ran the Satria in a couple of late-season 2001 BTCC rounds for Steve Wood. There had been some Proton involvement in Production Saloons (think it was known as the National Saloon Car Cup by then?) the previous year- a Proton Compact GTi for Frenchman Richard Cuene-Grandidier. It was entered by 'Kermit Racing with Proton Motorsport'

As Derwent said, the BTCC effort was underfunded and uncompetitive- drivers were David Leslie and Phil Bennett for 2002/3, replaced by South African Shaun Watson-Smith and Malaysian Farique Hairuman for the final season. After they pulled out of the BTCC, the team continued to race at home in Malaysia for a while- IIRC, before taking on the BTCC, they'd had some success in South Africa, although I think they'd been racing Opels rather than Protons there

What an extraordinary comment. Who else would you like to proscribe?

How about any other manufacturer cynically foisting third rate racing of fourth rate cars on the public?

Right. So that's Renault then.

Au contraire I enjoy Formua Renault single seaters- which increasingly is the only single seater show in town now that F3 has gone all European on us. But Renault 5 racing was - on a nostalgia theme- pretty...ermm ..rubbish.As was Formula Talbot and too many other doomed one make series to name;this years winner being the cynically small gridded 'Chevron' GR8 series.Only 30 seconds a lap seperated quickest from slowest at the one event I yawned my way through
