Hi all

I was going through some email letters now lately, of which one email asked a question about the 1952 Italian GP, why is it that Mike Hawthorn in the Bristol-Cooper is noted as nether a finisher or a non-finisher but that of not classified in the 1952 Italian GP ? Mike Hawthorn completed 38 laps of the 80 lap Italian GP.

Any possible reasons for this

Off the top of my head, this would be because he stopped in the pits for repairs and restarted the race, and was running at the finish, although so far behind that he wasn't classified. As to the reason for this, I don't have the information to hand at the moment.

On http://f1.rete.it/f1/en/03/00600.html it states that Italy GP lasted 53 laps. I don't know what happend during the race, but maybe he finished way down and was not classified? (an open door probably, but completing 38-53 laps is different from 38 out of 80 and could be the difference between non-finish and not-classified?)

Mmm, that site was probably wrong. Still the reasoning could be the same.

He had a lengthy pit-stop (see his memoirs Challenge me the race) to replace some parts in the car. He finished but was not classified.

Alessandro is right- according to 'Grand Prix!' he developed ignition trouble and had pitstop that lasted over an hour, but he rejoined the race...
