He also drove a F5000 car a few years earlier - can't remember that either but I'll check for you.
You can pick up all his F1 results (including non-championship races) here but I'm sure you already have that.

OK - I was wrong. He never ran in F5000. Funny, I have a distinct memory of him in an Eagle in 1974 but I can find nothing in the results.Originally posted by Allen Brown
... but I seem to remember him driving something else as well. I'll check when I get home. He also drove a F5000 car a few years earlier - can't remember that either but I'll check for you.
Also, that was his only Single-Seat Can-Am appearance.

Tyrellp34,
Did you find anything on Depailler's motorcycle career. I've always wanted to know about his achievements on two wheels. I know he never scored an FIM World Championship point (unlike Beltoise, Brambilla and many others), but do you know if entered some WC races (maybe a french GP at Charade) ?
My father was into the "deltaplane" (not sure the word exists in english) scene in the late 70s-early 80s. I remember him telling me that Depailler had been in a few official races (national championships or something). Do you have any info on that ? If not do you want me to try and find more about it ?

Patrick Depailler starts in 1962 with national motorcycle races in France. In 1963 at the “cup de Paris” at Monthlery he and Jean Pierre Beltoise met each other for the first time. During that season Depailler was unbeatable and recently won the 50cc national championship that year.
In 1964 Beltoise had his big crash at Reims and had a rest for some weeks or month. During his time of restoring he lend his Bultaco to Patrick for some races. Patrick has had a fine victory at Cognac with the Beltoise Bultaco.
In 1966 he was again national French champion into the 250cc class with Norton.
After that he was to busy concentrating in Automobil sport, but he was 2nd also in 1966 after Cevert at the “Volant Shell award”.
Evan as a F1 driver he never lost his love to huge overpowered motorcycles. In the late 70ies he bought the 6 Cylinder Benelli which becomes one of his favourite toys.

In a 1974 Eagle? Thanks for giving me an excuse but I'm afraid I'm just losing it.Originally posted by Jonathan

Does that take the record for the most completely wrong anyone has yet been on TNF?
And does it finally convince me to stop trying to answer questions when I'm at work and don't have access to my books and notes? Well, I sure hope so - I can't take this sort of embarrasment very often!

At least it wasn't beach buggy racing!Originally posted by Allen Brown
I've finally figured out what the shatterered remnants of my memory were clinging to. It was an Elfin F5000, not an Eagle. In Australia, not the US. In 1980, not 1974. And it wasn't even Patrick Depailler, it was Didier Pironi.

Yes I'm right. In 1977 Gilles Villeneuve took the pole ahead of Patrick, Cobb, Rosberg (Chevron Opert), Laffite and Holmes.
Cobb (March) won the race ahead of Holmes (March), Depailler (Chevron entered by Fred Opert), Gilles Villeneuve, Hill (March) and Laffite (Chevron Opert).
