US Historic GP 01

Hi all,

Did anyone of you saw the historic race at Indy ? I've just found a picture of it in France's only weekly motorsport : what a grid !
Eagle-Weslake, Brahbam-Repco, BRM, Tyrells, Brabham-ALFA, March 751s, Ferrari 312T2, Penske, Ensign, Hesketh, Parnelli, Wolf....

Not to mention some famous (and not so famous!) faces ....

I wish I had seen this. Just half of the historic cars & guys there were worse twice the "real" race !!

Did they actually race or drive at speed? Or they just did a few parade laps? The historic F1 cars appeared at the Monterey Historic Automobile Races few weeks before the USGP and they took part in a 10 lap sprint race. The FW07 won, FW08 took second place and I think the JPS Special came in third.

I was wondering too if this was a real race or an exhibition ? The picture in the magazine represents 25 cars at the end of the straight in classic starting grid position (2-2-2...). No other comments are made, but I suspect it was an exhibition because the order of the cars seems to be chronological : Eagle & Brabham-Climax ont row 1, Brabham-Repco & BRM P160 row 2, Tyrell 001/2/3 row 3, Brahbam-ALFA & Penske-DFV row 4, Ferrari T2 & March 751 row 5 etc... until the last row where there seems to be a 1979 Tyrell and 1982 March. So ??

I was at both Indy and the Monterrey Historics this year--it *was* quite a grid!

At Indy they weren't allowed to race as such by the organizers, and had to run behind the safety car which governed their speed. It was a parade ordered by age as long as the drivers could stand it that way.

TheTyrrell 002 was all over the bumper of the safety car in an apparent attempt to get them to pick up the pace, but it was for naught.

A friend is running one of the cars at these events, and tells me that they're working with the organizers to try and put on an actual race at Indy next year.

A couple of items of note:
The Eagle Westlake at this year's event is apparently a completely different car from the Eagle at last years (which appears in these pictures).

The Tyrrell 002 was joined this year by the newly restored 004 chassis--it was beautiful to see the two of them take the corkscrew at Laguna Seca together!

thats too bad they had to follow a pace car at indy. i had a BLAST watching them run at Laguna. best of luck to your friend on pursuading the organizers because i will be at indy next year. it would be very special to have them race on Sunday before the GP.
