ok, i have to admit that i often have strange thoughts early in the morning, so when i got up today and signed onto atlasf1, 2 things caught my eye, ukyo katayama having climbed mount everest (and returned safely), and the friday morning press conference.

now i think it was hemmingway that said that there are only 3 real sports, those being automobile racing, mountain climbing, and bull fighting, so the first idea that came to mind was whether or not we might now see ukyo in spain trying to become a matador anytime soon... as if that weren't bad enough, somehow the image of H2F in a matador's costume, sword hidden carefully behind his back, arm with the red flag , and eddie jordan, complete with horns, ready to charge!

of course , the bullfight scenarios with f1 people are endless... ron dennis could fit a variety of roles there, and i suppose Jos would simply punch out the bull like "mongol" did the horse in blazing saddles.

oh well. seriously, congrats to UK on a big accomplishment, and equal congrats to H2F on a well placed jab to eddie.

Can we turn this INTO a nostalgia topic by asking what other weird sporting (or otherwise) pursuits drivers through the ages have had? Or is that a bit old hat?

hey, i told you it was early... i meant this to go into the readers comments, but screwed up... but of course, other drivers pursuits... i guess jackie stewart and his shooting comes to mind, i dunno about other drivers.

mt E another pikes peak? i wanna be on the south summit to film the 4WD rally cars goign up the hillary step!

One of the Italians (de Caesaris or de Angelis) was a national junior ski team member IIRC. And of course Mansell entered the Australian Open golf tournament and did respectably.

Not to mention the Olympians... Ben Pon for instance among others. He represented the Netherlands in skeet shooting in Munich 1972.

Nigel also got his black belt in 93. He figured he needed it after several collisions with Senna.

Just a few off the top of my head - Robin Widdows - Olympic bobsleigh - Fon de Portago competed in the Grand National, Roberto Mieres - Olympic Yachter plus rowing (thats rowing as in redgrave not rowing as in Mansell!) & rugby & Divina Galica - ski-ier - more may come to me later.

Oh & Well done Ukyo - he always said it was his biggest wish in life (apart from winning the F1 title)

Bob Wollek was part of the french ski team but missed his Olympics qualification. He was disapointed with the french ski federation of the time and turned to car racing. Patrick Tambay also was a top skier.
The Villeneuve bros started motor racing with ski-doo.
Lella Lombardi played handball at a high level.
Cliff Allison was a professional jcokey. His many wins brought him enough money to buy his first race car.
IIRC Fon de Portago finished 4th at some Olympics (Cortina '56 ??) and was the leader of the Spanish Olympic Team that year, carrying the national flag in the opening & closing ceremonies. He was very good at many proletarian sports like polo, fencing... :lol:

Alain Prost loves cycling and before he bought Ligier he was often seen in amateur races.
Didn't Prince Bira competed in some Olympics in the 60s (yachting ?) ?

Almost every Swedish driver has been Ice-hockey players in their teens. We all have in this Ice-hockey-country...

One of the finest all round sportsmen was Carlos Menditeguy. At 17 he was Junior Tennis champion of Argentina. At the age of 17 he took up polo and became regarded as one of the top five players in the world. He played golf (Open Southern Champion of Argentina), Table Tennis (Champion of Agentina) and Squash (ditto). In 1950 he took up motor racing and the rest, as they say, is history.

Davina Galica was an Olympic skier before taking up motor racing - in 1968 she almost became the first British woman to win a Winter Olympic medal when she came 4th in the downhill.

Ian Ashley fences, David Purley lost his life doing aerobatics (officialy a sport in some books) Speed & powerboating is similiar but people who were in it are Dieter Quester, Lamberto Leoni & of course, Didier Pironi. Lance Macklin cycled & Takuma Sato, newcomer next year, of course, was on the verge of an Olympic call-up in cycling had he continued down that path one more year.
de Portago also swam, Guy Ligier played Rugby, Ken Tyrrell had a trial as a footballer (and Jackie Oliver?? Not to sure re. that one) & Moises Solana was a brilliant expert at Jai-Alai which is how he got the money to go racing

In a remote location into my memory I think I remember Carlos Sainz was a National Spanish champion in squash or some sport like that. Maybe someone can precise it more.

Of course Luis Moya is pretty good in karate, as we saw in those infamous meters of one Rally of Great Britain...

Stefan, I never made it to the Södertälje SK juniors...
Just skated for fun on frozen lakes...always played hard but fair... no cheap-shots...

But I am only 38 so I am actually thinking of a comeback..!
I will seriously consider any offer....!
