While adding more WRC results to RallyBase, I got stuck with the standings of the Cup for Drivers of Production Cars (the Group N Cup) and the Ladies' Cup. Does anybody have the final points (preferably with event scores) for either of these championships (just the top competitors would already make me very happy)?

At the moment I'm adding the World Championship results of 1990-1993 to the database of my website (http://weasel.studen...e.nl/~rallying/) and it's sometimes difficult to get complete information. If there's someone on this forum with rally or motorsport annuals (i.e. World Rallying, Rallycourse, Automobile Year/Année Automobile) of those years who would be willing to look small things up to make RallyBase more complete, I'd really appreciate it.

Earlier in this thread fines has posted a list of group and class winners of WRC rallies, which already has been of considerable help to me. But does anyone have the finishing positions and codrivers of these winners?

Sorry to bring this thread up again, but I'm still looking for more details on the list of class winners posted earlier. Is there anyone who has the overall finishing positions and names of codrivers as well (maybe just for some years)?

Anyway, I can inform you that I've added the WRC results of 1987-1989 as far as I've got them, and will probably add 1983-1986 next week (for address of website see previous post). Anyone who is interested in rallying history and willing to help with gathering or checking results, is more than welcome to contact me.

kabouter,

I think I can help you, providing co-driver names, class winners or so. I have a lot of info on both WRC and ERC. Maybe tomorrow I'll post another reply with data missing.

Carles.

Carles.

That would be great. :D All additions to the database are welcome. I want to start with the European Championship as well in the near future, and I can use every bit of help for that.

Thanks very much for adding the codrivers Anjakub
I am in the process of adding the results of 1983-1986 to the database, so these additions for 1983 are well-timed indeed :)

MrA., the name could well be Prud'homme (or maybe Preud'homme), written like that. It's a possibility in French.

MrAero,

M.(Michel I think) Prud'homme is the real name for the codriver of Jean-Paul Luc.

Darren,

I'm interested in the history of rallying, and this is a first bunch of results, dates and similar stuff, to improve your database.

Carles.

PS: In a few days, I'll try to fulfill the gaps remaining, if you're interested.

Carles & Mr Aero - thanks for all of that. I'll update the database I have, and I think that the easiest thing I can then do is to upload the lot onto the web so that you can see the latest version of the data and point out any other problems. Another item on my to do list!

The WRC results of 1983-1986 have been added to my database (RallyBase, address of the website in my signature). As you can see, most of the data in this thread about the period 1983-now is present in my database. For all rallies I've got the top 10, other important finishers, most Group winners and major retirements. So Darren, I don't know if it's necessary if you put your info for that period online (for the WRC events that is), because everything's already included in my database (I think).
I will again go through the results posted here and add the things to RallyBase that weren't there yet. Maybe we can see RallyBase a bit as Darren's Minor Championship Results Page for rallying, but in a more organized way?

I'm adding a list of sources to my website (the list can be found here: http://weasel.studen...x.php?type=info) and now I was wondering where the list of group and class winners in this thread is taken from. I've used the list quite often, so I'd like to mention a source for it.

By the way, Darren, have you already had time to put your rally data online?

Working on it. It is one amongst several things that I'm doing right now (I'll add notes to "I had an idea" thread when I've added the data). I have noted down several extra's from Motorsport etc, so you can grab them when I've got them available. You'll also find several extra rally results on the same page from the ERC and various British championships. I must remember not to start so many things at the same time.........

I haven't "stopped in" at this thread before. Impressive stuff, but a lot to go through to find out just what is what - more than 50,000 words.

On the subject of Monte Carlo Rally, there is a very expensive book on this event out now. I had one on the way to me but it has been lost/stolen en route. So I can't say how good it is. I can't tell any more about it - I don't know author, publisher, where it can be bought. A friend phoned and said he was buying one, would I also like a copy? I said yes, but it has not arrived.

But if anyone comes up with exact dates of the early Monte Carlo Rallies, start and finish dates, I am keen to see them.

If this has been mentione dbefor in this thread, please accept my apologies. I don't have the time to read all of this.

I have noticed the book being available, but I was hoping for it to come down in price a bit before I purchase one.

Kabouter - while I remember, most of the small updates I have made have been to the 1970s/early '80s stuff, so it will be extra to what you have on your web-page at the moment.

I know of the existence of the Rallye Monte Carlo book as well. But being just a poor student - :| -, it was way out of my league at the time. Maybe I can find the details for those interested, I must have a magazine with a review somewhere.

Darren, those new additions could be interesting. First on my program is to finally include Asia Pacific results, and then WRC results 1979-1982. I was missing some (what I consider) essential data for 1982, but I think I will receive them soon.

Barry, I'm trying to get all the contents of this thread on my website (which I hope will be easier to search than this enormous bulk of text). Most of the data from 1983 and later is available, previous years will be added gradually. I don't think the early Monte dates have been listed here yet, and I have no clue where to find them except in the aforementioned very expensive book...

Kabouter - I've just had an idle flick through your results. The 1983 Portuguese rally should be the TAP Rally of Portugal Vinho do Porto - it was sponsored by TAP since its inception. It's a consistency thing, as you have the RAC Rally listed as the Lombard RAC Rally, Lombard being the sponsor.

I know that TAP has been sponsor of the rally since its inception, but it wasn't in the official rally title for some years. The official logo of the rally in 1983 just says Rallye de Portugal Vinho do Porto. That's also the name World Rallying gives. Only in 1994 TAP returned in the rally title.
This is just a hunch, but I think FIA rules only allowed one sponsor in the official name of the rally, and Vinho do Porto was title sponsor, so there couldn't be TAP in the name anymore.

But thanks a lot for checking the results!

I also managed to find the details on the Rallye Monte-Carlo book (I think this is the book Barry meant)
Le Rallye Monte-Carlo au XXe siècle
author: Maurice Louche
760 pages (2 volumes)
1800 pictures (in b/w and colour)
text in English and French
recommended price: EUR 155

publisher (the author himself) :

At the very start of this thread, Rice suggested this book. Searching the web and library catalogues however I haven't been able to find it mentioned anywhere. Is there someone who knows more about this book?

Some book info:

World Rallying by Martin Holmes - the early editions covered the current year and also went back to the start of the WRC in 1973. Top 10, class winners, major retirements all detailed with car numbers and registartion plates. Also top 10 of all European Championship events and top 3 of Asia Pacific, Middle East and African Championships. The series is up to about number 28 from memory. There have been a variety of publishers.

Monte Carlo - The Louche book mentioned above is the definitive one. All finishers covered but no mention of retirements. A fabulous book.

Tour de Corse - also by Louche and also excellent

Sweden - Swedish language book title something like "Full Fart Genome(?) Sverige" Sorry I'm not at home for a few weeks to give the exact title and publisher. Excellent book but irritatingly lists all finishers in their class order, not overall.

Finland - 3 books. Latest by Illoinen is nice if very incomplete on statistics. There is another one that covers 1953 to about 1990 and lista all starters, finishers, non-starters, officials - everything! This is the perfect book for the statistic fan.

RAC/GB - Maurice Hamilton's book tells the story but is light statistically.

Portugal - I found a lightweight book mixed with a biography of Cesar Torre in the wine shop at Lisbon airport!

San Remo - Again a rather lightweight Italian language book.

Safari - some good stuff. Vivian Mitchell wrote a history up to about 1980(?) with full entry lists and top ten finishers (when there were that many!). Also Disney's Shell history of the Safari. Roger Barnards book published in the mid-nineties gives all finishers with penalties so read in conjunction with Mitchell it's pretty good. Klein threatens to produce the definitive book one of these years......

Olumpus,POR,Canada,Catalunya,Ivory Coast,Cyprus,Argentina,Australia,NZ,Acropolis nothing I have seen. Anybody know anything?

Thanks for all the info Fred

The other one you mention above is Jyväskylän Suurajot 1951-1990 by Olavi Ukkonen, published by Jysuma Oy. Leif Snellman is scanning the results pages for me, and that section really is fabulous.

Almost got it right, Fred.....Full Fart Genom Sverige (At Full Speed Though Sweden) authors were Anders Tunberg and Peter Haventon, published through Bienen&Haventon. ISBN 91-971861-2-0.

But I agree, that the results pages (the main reason for me to purchase that book) were something of a disappointment. Many interesting and rare pictures included though.

If I remember correctly the edition was just 1000 copies (possibly 2000?) so it's a hard to find book. Luckily there is one available at a Helsinki library.

The Tour de Corse book mentions retirements, but it doesn't give first names or times of the finishers. Does the Monte Carlo book mention first names and finishing times (and Group and Class positions)?

I've got my 2001 edition of the World Rallying series today. I'm a little bit disappointed for the race reports are very brief and there are no stage-by-stage times. It's nice to see the results of all European Championship rounds and the winners of the national championships though. I'm considering the switch to Rallycourse next year and the purchase of its older editions. Is Rallycourse any better? Does it contain in-depth rally reports and stage-by stage times? Does it cover the European Championship?

I was lucky to find my copy in a used-books shop in central Helsinki a couple of years ago, IIRC it was quite a bargain too...

I've now got copies of the result pages of Full Fart Genom Sverige, and it has already helped filling some gaps, and finding some hitherto unknown class winners, but for a lot of drivers I can still only use AF (=Also Finished) in the results because I don't know their overall positions (example: http://weasel.studen...ult&rallyid=151).
Is there a source that lists the overall results - and maybe retirements as well? Maybe there is a Swedish motorsports magazine that gave full results?

Geza, the edition I have of Rallycourse - 1996 - only gives the top 10 for the maximum coefficient ERC events, and only pays attention to the British Championships. In that respect World Rallying is superior by far. Rallycourse in 1996 gave the top 6 for each stage, and the Group N & F2 fastest times.

Thanks a lot, Kabouter. Today I visited one of my friends, who owns a couple of Rallycourse books. I looked into one of them and I found it really dissapointing. There's only half a page about the rallies itself in it. It doesn't tell the story of the rally, how the lead changed hands, who were in which position at certain stages of the race, who had mechanical trouble, etc. I would really like to see a rally annual, which contains the complete story of each race of the championship. Perhaps the new Rally Yearbooks by Philippe Joubin & co. ?

Thanks to Janusz Szymanek the results in RallyBase for 1986 (http://weasel.studen...champid=wrc1986) now contain all class winners, and all points scorers in the Group A World Championship, except for the Rally Argentina (http://weasel.studen...ult&rallyid=222).
I'm now almost finished with fulfilling one of my longest standing ambitions: compiling the full points table of the World Championship for Drivers of Group A cars in 1986 . As I mentioned earlier, only three drivers from the Rally Argentina are needed before I can present the full table.
Is there anyone who can help with the result for Argentina, so that this table can be completed?

The drivers finishing just outside the top 10 in Argentina are now added to the database, which enabled me to complete the Group A classification.
The full points table of the 1986 World Championship for Drivers of Group A Cars is here:
http://weasel.studen...dingid=wcd1986a

In the last weeks many results in the period 1994-1999 have been completed or added to.
Something I am particularly looking for at the moment is a full result of the Tour de Corse 1992. It seems impossible to find more than the top 16. Is there anyone who can help?

WRC results of 1979-1982 have now been added to RallyBase. Included are all points scorers and many other 'important' drivers and class winners. There are undoubtedly some mistakes and typos, so please let me know if you spot anything that is not correct.

I've got the Maurice Louche Monte Carlo book and despite the price the best book I have ever bought. Loads of detail, and for anyone who has it have a look at the picture on pages

66 Top right 1934 No. 144 Lecot - Citroen 4580cc 98th O/A 114 finishers
68 Middle piv 1935 No. 122 Webber - Ford V8 3622cc 102nd O/A 103 finishers
72 Middle pic 1936 No. 63 Tiel - Minerva-Kromhort 7000cc 71st O/A 72 finishers
75 bottom right 1937 No. 77 Van De Weerd - Bedford 3180cc 76th O/A 81 finishers

For those of you who don't the make of the last one is a bit of a give away but these are all Buses!!!!!

Other good rallying books

Rally by Reinhard Klein has been mentioned before.

The BMC/BL Competitions Department by Bill Price is good for info on Mini's, Healey's etc.

Monte Carlo the Mini Legend by the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust. Very specific but everything on the results from 1960 to 1970 for Mini's.

Works Mini's by Peter Browning, again very specific but loads of info and results.

Seven Year Twitch by Marcus Chambers &
Rupert Jones, Memoirs of a motorsporting Clergyman are good for the insight to rallying in the 60's.

I do have a reason for the Mini and 60's books, despite the fact I wasn't born until the 1970's.

I own this car now.

I've just found Geoff Mabbs as a starter in the '63 Tulpenrallye (Tulipes) at the wheel of a BMC Mini Cooper S, but I don't know if is the same car or not.

There is a thread nearby called "La Turbie - The Early Races". The question has been raised of the use of La Turbie in rallies. I was under the impression it has been used often in either or both of the Alpine Rally and the Monte Carlo Rally.

Can any of the experts here duck over to that thread and give us some recent (ie past half a century!) history of motor sport on La Turbie?

Cheers for that, where did you find the info?

I know Geoff Mabbs had a Austin Cooper S later in 1963, but the Tulip Rally was in April so it would be OYA he used. The first Cooper S were used in September 1963 on the Tour De France. Mabbs ran at car Number 1 on the 63 RAC in the car also on my web-page.

Off to search through Google for a while!
