"Bullitt" was a Steve McQueen movie that is regarded to having the best car chase scene ever produced on film. It was between a Dodge Charger and an 1968 Ford Mustang. Do you all agree? Supposedly, this car chase scene gave rise to the "You drive like Steve McQueen" expression.

What other car type movies that don't involve racing do you appreciate as classics. I really liked the original "Gone in 60 seconds" move. However, the remake just didn't do it for me.

BTW, Ford came out with a special edition Bullitt Mustang this year that is bascially a souped up Mustang GT and painted dark green like the original. I thought that was a rather neat idea.

there's Ronin with some good chases in Nice and Paris. There are more cut scenes than you see in Bullit. Bullit I believe was far more dangerous. The Bullit-DVD includes some making-of material which is quite impressive though very short.

Just saw Ronin a few days ago on DVD with a neat home cinema equipment... the car chase scenes are a really awesome experience...

But I think that Bullitt - condisered the 1960's technology in comparison to today's high tech stuff - is still the best in car chasing scenes. Nice that Ford remembered S McQueen and featured scenes from this movie in their recent Puma (?)commercial - S McQueen drove a Ford Puma!

You can find out about the original cars used in Bullitt at

I always liked "The Italian Job."
Ronin is very well done.
Bullitt, however, stands as the "classic" car chase film.

And don't forget all those "James Bond" gaffes!!

My favorite has to be an early '70's B-movie called "Lady Ice". A villain's daughter (Julie Andews, I think) in a red Ferrari Daytona chases The Good Guy, Donald Sutherland in a light metallic blue Maserati Ghibli Spyder through streets of Miami. Classic cars and classic chase... At least they shouldn't change sound of engines for it (in Bullitt McQueen's Mustang actually has sound of a GT40, added in montage).

interesting. but the sound does really make that scene!
like the sound of the guns in his other movie - 'the getaway'. the sound was awsome at the theatre.

according to frankenheimer, the basic shooting techniques in 'ronin' were the same as in 'grand prix' (large cameras mounted fore and aft in very fast cars), but the equipment was much better.

while not great, i thought the chase through traffic in 'basic instinct' was effective.

"Driver". Fantastic film.

None of the characters had names, apart from "The Driver" [Ryan O'Neal], "The Player" [Isabella Adjani] and so on.

Lots of great car chases, some wrecks and so on...

There's a riveting chase scene in "To Catch a Thief", a mid-1950s Hitchcock film. Grace Kelly (woolf woolf, pant pant, drool drool) is driving a Mercedes roadster up some twisty Monte Carlo mountain roads. Police are following, Cary Grant is her nervous passenger, and there are cliffs on one side of the road. No elaborate camera setups or special effects; just masterful shooting and editing on Hitchcock's part to creat a truly suspenseful scene.

"The Seven-Ups," with Roy Scheider, might deserve a nod here; a chase scene pretty much in the vein of "The French Connection."

does anyone recall the film, "Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry"? something of a four-wheeled "Easy Rider," with Peter Fonda starring as one of three bandits on the run.

"Two-Lane Blacktop" with its existential subtext, is somewhat similar to "Vanishing Point."

anyway, all of these are from the early 70s, a period rich with films featuring car chases.

incidentally, during the car chase in "Bullitt," McQueen and his foes turn onto Mansell Street (the street sign is in-shot). a case of Nigel getting some early promotion?:)

I enjoyed Grand Theft Auto. Chasing the Rolls Royce at any cost to stop the marriage of a young couple. Nice variable vehicles used to chase the car.

On saturday, through Barcelona's "City TV" I enjoyed the Jean-Louis Trintignant's film "Un Hombre y una Mujer", dealing with a works Ford driver (Trintignant) competing in Le Mans (GT40) & the Monte-Carlo Rally (Mustang). His partenaire is, if I'm not wrong, Mireille Mathieu.

I think she was Anouk Aimee. I thought it was a fantastic film, spoilt only by some daft dialogue when Trintignant says to Aimee that the racing car exhaust system is made from organ pipes. Perhaps that scene wasn't meant to be taken seriously.

Another film with a car theme, black and white I think, which I saw about 35 or 40 years ago, had a chap taking a Bentley (W.O. vintage) or maybe it was a Lagonda round a course on some island, trying to convince his female passenger that he was really the owner of the car/mansion/island/whatever.

Actually he was a double, investigating a murder. But the objective was to lap in 4 minutes (or whatever) which is what the other guy had done in a race round the island. The part played by the actor was "Ward McKenzie Prescott" but I can't remember the name of the film or much else about it.

At the time it seemed a great bit of filming but I suppose if I saw it today I might be a bit more blase about it

Ian,

you must be right with the name of the partenaire of Jean-Louis Trintignant, anyway, she's a very pretty girl.

From my point of view there are two facts spoiling the film: the dialogue about the organ pipes, and the speeded images of the Monte-Carlo Rally, doubled with the screeching of the tires... over the snow!.

She sure is!

I suppose you're right about the images from the Monte-Carlo Rally, but it was nice to see them even speeded up!

Personally I always thought the Bullit chase was massively overrated... (and check out the re-appearing VW Beetle that's tootling along in a lot of scenes).

The French Connection chase is impressive, especially as it was done totally illegally on the open road (ie, they didn't close the roads for filming).

Nothing will ever top car chases in 'The Dukes of Hazard' or 'The A-Team' :D

(honourable mentions: 'Starsky & Hutch' and 'The Professionals' (Capri heaven!))

Oh, and Le Mans contains one of my fav film quotes. Steve McQueen gets to say to the waiter 'Cheese please'. I dunno why, it's just cracks me up (prob because it sounds so... er... cheesy! And rhymes - I'm sad like that)

I never miss the Bullitt chase scene. I think it was the best chase scene and having grown up in San Francisco at that time makes it a part of my life.

Vanishing Point was another great car movie. Good race between Dodge Charger R/T and a Jag?

The Gumball Rally was another one. Some nice cars in the film and the one that got me hooked on the 427 Cobra. Some pretty corny acting but great car shots. Gotta love Franco (Raul Julia) as the Ferrari team driver.

Hi there, If your into older cars, "The Fast Lady" starring a 3/4and a half Bentley with James Robertson Justice, Leslie Phillips, Dick Emery and a bird whose name I've forgotten in a rather silly English farce with great driving scenes of the Bentley on a skid patch and in a race at (I think) Silverstone. Nice period piece. Not much touches "Bullitt" but in a pure racing sense has everybody seen "The Sound of Speed" with the front engined Scarab F1 car now fitted with a Chev V8 at Riverside with Reventlow pretending to drive although its actually Chuck Daigh. Not a word is spoken nor is it necessary. Fabulous in-car footage and sound. Four thums up!

I can't believe nobody mentioned 'Blues Brothers' so far... *shakes head* Police chase was a classic! And, no, I don't think they overdid it with crashes- it kept me pinned to the floor in fits of laughter. :)

The earliest car orientated film I can remember watching is "Genevieve"....not sure that it quailifies as a car chase though. I think I constructed an Airfix model of the star.

David, I can barely believe you forgot the bird!

She was the delectable, delicious, delightful Julie Christie in one of her first starring roles. They never mention it now, too lowbrow I suppose, but I was smitten for life when I saw the film as a 16 year old schoolboy.

Now that old or at least middle age has come I can also appreciate the superb screen presence of James Robertson Justice.

The other early Julie Christie film that is worth seeing for her alone (although its actually quite a good film anyway) is of course Billy Liar.

Hell drivers…Old b/w brit film. Basic and the forerunner to the modern car chase played out with trucks, the speeding up of the film is easily recognisable….

The Italian Job, more renown for the saying about the ‘ bloody doors off’ , minis, I knew the driver who starred as ‘Tony’, his tales of the making of the film, the lambo being pushed off the road had the engine and gearbox taken out first because of the expense, the director wanted the minis to do a 180 in the tunnel shots, they towed out about four minis before he gave up.

Vanishing Point, the Chrysler Dodge Challenger, and the trans US hi speed rush

Hi Ian McKean, I didn't forget the bird, just her name! i kept thinking it was Julie Andrews but she was'nt a real person until "10" was she? I remember the leading man was "Murdoch Troon" but cannot remember the actors name.

I cannot believe that nobody has made a comment about my favourite car movie "The Sound of Speed". Made by Bruce Kensler in 1961 if I recall. I know Karl Ludvigsen was looking for a copy of it a few years ago so it has his stamp of approval!

How do I add other correspondents quotes to my comments? I'm a complete duffer with computers.

David,

You just click on the quote icon and the persons whole post will appear in your posting box. You can edit out the bits you don't want as well.

Regarding cars in movies, can anyone in the business tell me why they have to add the sound screeching tyres even when the car is travelling on grass or dirt?

For some reason this has ALWAYS bothered me.

275 GTB-4, I agree with you on "The Burglars", a great chase sequence. Remy Julianne's work, I think. I saw this flick at a Drive-In and watching the "inspired" drivers leave was almost as good as the film.

"The French Connection" has one of the most exciting car (vs. the EL) chases ever. Even more exciting when you know that the producers couldn't get streets closed or police help and just went ahead and did it. Bill Hickman did the driving, as he had in "Bullitt"

"Against All Odds" (a pretty good Film Noir) has a great one as well, Jeff Bridges in a Porsche 911 vs James Woods in a 308 GTB along Sunset Blvd through traffic at high speed. I saw a interview with the stunt director, he said it was the most difficult job ever as he was not allowed to have any collisions and any cars even scratched. One of the most realistic chases ever on the screen.

There is a remake of "the Italian Job" coming out next month. There is a preview on Yahoo.
I watched it, but I can't recommend it because I think it gives the whole plot away. I hope I'm wrong.

Here is a link to an interesting article about the chase in "Bullitt".
http://home.maine.rr...n/bullchase.htm

In agreement with David. The "Sound of of Speed" is mesmerizing. A definite "must" !

The Italian Job of course.

The Castle of Cagliostro has a wild ride of a chase, if your into animation. But then again 80% of the potential audience disappeared with that word :p

I love Ronin. There was also it's 'prequal'. Luc Besson, the man behind Ronin has done a few car films. Just before Ronin, he did 'Taxi'. Great chase between the hot Peugeot 405 Taxi of our hero (thinly disquised Super Tourer?) and a pair of German crooks with Mercedes street racers. And a very impressive list of stunt drivers; Phillipe Alliot, Jean-Pierre Jabouille, Jean-Pierre Jarier, Jutta Kleinschmidt, Henri Pescarolo, Jean Ragnotti and Jean-Louis Schlesser. Getting the drivers to stop conducting the world lie telling championships around the card table on set must have been harder than performing the actual stunts.

My second favourite car chase? The Blues Brothers. Hilarious stuff. Each time you watch it you see more cop cars get wrecked. And don't forget, we're wearing sunglasses.

If I see another racing cars on the streets chase, a la Charlie's Angels or Driven I'll be sick.

My favourite? Like there was ever doubt.

Le Mans.

I'll say it again, if you haven't seen The Gumball Rally you're missing some of the best 365GTB/4 Daytona and Cobra 427 footage ever caught on film. Not to be confused with The Cannonball Run, of course

Years ago, I saw a real low-budget B-movie thriller on late night TV - it was some sort of murder-and-intrigue-and-Mafia kind of thing set on the Cote d'Azur and various parts of Italy. It started at the Monaco GP - loads of colour footage of Sharknoses, Lotus 18s etc. Don't think it was 61 as there was no Moss... so I'd guess at 62 with an outside chance of 63. There was an assassination of a spectator during the race, IIRC.

Anyone know what this might've been or if there was any more racing content in it?

Oh, and anyone mentioned 'The Killers' yet? Plenty of gorgeous sports cars in it...

One of my favorite car chasing films is Smokey and the Bandit, starring Burt Reynolds and Jackie Gleason. The cars are a black and gold Trans Am persued by an ever disintegrating police car. The plot, about beer smugling from Texas to somewhere east, seems to be the excuse for a lot of wrecked patrol cars during it's play time.

Hi, David,
As Eric has pointed out, the male lead was Stanley Baxter, which I had remembered although I had forgotten his character's name, Murdoch Troon.

I'm not sure about "10". Wasn't that the girl who played Jane in Tarzan? Her name escapes me at this minute but will come to me in a few moments. Other films that I remember with Julie Christie were Shampoo with Warren Beatty and Don't Look Now with Donald Sutherland, set in Venice. I believe there has been some discussion if the love scene in the latter was shot "hard" although the version shown on British TV is relatively innocuous.

Rendezvous gets my vote for non-track action. No specially built stunt cars, no mysteriously reappearing Volkswagens, just nine minutes of balls to the wall Ferrari V12 through the early morning streets of Paris. It's recently been remastered and is available from spiritlevelfilm. For those of you who have one of the old VHS copies, the new version is a quantum leap in quality.

Can someone help me with "Climb Dance"? Is that from Pikes Peak?

Interesting about Rendezvous - everyone sings its praises, but the version I saw (downloaded) had audio that was clearly overdubbed. This was discussed in one of the previous "car movie" threads.

Yes, it's from Pike's Peak. I've got a copy of it in some weird movie format on my hard disc, but it's sixty-odd megabytes....

"The French Connection" has one of the most exciting car (vs. the EL) chases ever. Even more exciting when you know that the producers couldn't get streets closed or police help and just went ahead and did it.

Was my post invisible?! :D

Hi all,

Don't get much time to look around but just found this thread.

Many years ago (yes I am that old) I remember reading a 'Fifth Colunm' about a film called 'Rendezvous', searched Amazon etc. and could not get hold of a copy - wasn't smart enough to download from the internet!

Then I read this:

So I ordered the film and .... well I'm not good enough to put it into words. All I can say is that the article is spot on. Yes I love all the films already mentioned but this is something else.

Steve.

PS.
I was impressed by the service from the Co. I got the DVD from I sent an email thanking them, this is the reply:

Pleasure,

Hope you enjoy the film....spread the word and drive safely (heh heh)

Hi,

I placed my order on Thursday evening - your 'Confirmation of order email' is timed at 18.55.

This morning, Saturday, the DVD arrived.

Many, many thanks for the fantastic service.

Steve.

Maybe just me but I liked that!

The car park scene in Driver reminds me of my wifes parking, but don't tell her I told you!

My vote goes to the Italian Job of course!

And Vanishing Point was good.

I was a little disappointed with Bullit, but loved the cinematography of a couple of scenes, like when the Mustang appears in the rear view mirror...very tough.

But Im hoping to get a copy of Rendezvous very soon.

Am I the only one who has seen 'Taxi' and 'Taxi 2' ?

No classic cars in 'em, but very impressive (and funny) raw driving stuff. And the opening scene in 'Taxi 2' is hilarious, with the Marseille Peugeot taxi tailgating a Peugeot turbo that is taking part in a local rally, the taxi driver complaining about those bloody tourists blocking the road :rotfl:

No elaborate camera setups or special effects; just masterful shooting and editing on Hitchcock's part to creat a truly suspenseful scene.

Sunbeam Alpine. I think Hitchcock did a similar scene in "Notorious".
