Sorry, no. Info came from USAC Yearbooks when he was still active (1966-75 in my records), hometown always given as New Carlisle (OH). Wife Norma, four children (Pam, Tony, Steve and Kim) in '67 and '70 also. Raced stock cars and modifieds 1951-65 - that's all I can come up with in a hurry.

My date was supplied by him, but I guess if drivers can knock a few years off their age, so can journalists

Speculative shot, from a Times birth announcement:

Clive Gallop - possibly Feb 4th 1892, at Mena House, Pyramids, Egypt. Father of the infant was Reginald G Gallop, a barrister, resident at Lavington House, Wimbledon.

edit: death notice, again in The Times, says he died September 7th 1960, as the result of an accident, aged 68. Full name Reginald Clive Gallop. Described as Lt-Colonel Gallop and lived in Leatherhead, Surrey (like a lot of retired colonels!)

second edit: definitely our man! Marriage announcement from 1932 describes him as "elder son of the late Reginald Gallop".

Re Bill Aston: He is listed as New Zealander here. If in fact that one was the well-known Englishman Bill Aston (1900 - 1974) it would mean he travelled to New Zealand and raced there at the age of 53 just one week after he competed in the Coronation Trophy race at Crystal Palace on 25 May 1953.

Oops... just when I looked this up I noticed that the man was spelled "Ashton" in the results of the Dunedin Road Race 1953.

Bill Urquhart-Dykes died before April 9th 1981. That is the death date of his widow, whose home was in Cobham, Surrey.

His father, William Alston Dykes, an officer in the Cameronians, seems to have hailed originally from Hamilton in Scotland, but there also seems to be an Irish connection, as both Bill's mother and wife were from Dundalk. Assuming Bill was born the right side of the blanket, then his dob is after December 3rd 1896, which is when his parents married in Dundalk.

Edit: I think I've found him! But apparently on the wrong side of the blanket - August 13th 1896 in Hamilton.

The caveat is of course that this could be a younger brother of Bill's father - the Times birth announcement (17/8/1896) is unclear and says that the father of the infant was William Dykes of London. OTOH, the father of the December groom is described as William Alston Dykes of Hamilton.

Which date, you will no doubt notice Reinhard (and others), is the one normally quoted for Emilio's death. In fact, he died on the 19th. I think we can blame David Venables for that one - he says "Monday June 20th" in "Racing 1500s". June 20th 1939 was a Tuesday: I've found a few other dates in the 1939 chapter are out by one day - I think he was actually using a 1938 calendar by mistake!

Would anybody have a birth date for Austin and ERA designer Tom Murray Jamieson? The only reference I can find to his age is in Harrison's "Austin: a racing history", which says that "towards the end of 1934" he was "only 28", so he was presumably born in either 1905 or 1906.

The Birth Index narrows it down to Oct-Nov-Dec 1905 in St Pancras (Vol 1b Page 20 if you want to invest in the birth certificate).

1905 is confirmed by an obituary which you will get a link to if you - I do not kid you! - google for "Thomae Murray Jamieson".

One of those two-part non-hyphenated surnames, like EC Gordon England and JG Parry Thomas.

I would have thought Thomas was the man's surname? He was often referred to as J G P Thomas. Unless of course you've seen his death certificate...

The Register of Births shows him as:

National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) shows him as:

and mentions his wife as Sybil Jamieson, not Sybil Murray Jamieson.

So I would conclude that Murray was a middle name.

J G P Thomas was John Godfrey Parry Thomas, 1884-1927, a completely different person.

While we're on the subject, Parry Thomas was always called Parry Thomas in period but is now called Parry-Thomas (hyphenated) by Wikipedia and others.

When he was born, he was registered as:

Perhaps this was to distinguish him from his contemporary John Jameson of Jameson Aero Engines?

As for Parry Thomas - even Hugh Tours' book doesn't make it clear. Although his father was the Rev JW Thomas, the "Parry" comes from his mother's maiden name. In the space of three paragraphs, Tours calls him "Godfrey", "the young Parry Thomas" and simply "Thomas" - the name by which everybody at Leyland knew him. A little further on, he quotes Reid Railton:

I never permitted myself the familiarity of calling him anything else [than Thomas]. Most of his later friends among the racing fraternity called him 'Tommy', and to his family he was Godfrey. Nobody ever called him Parry.

Yet, again, the contemporary press references are often to "Parry Thomas" - as is the title of Tours' book!

This isn't particularly helpful, but I've found that people who lived in the early part of the 20th century often went by names that were nothing to do with the given name on their birth certificate. If Parry Thomas's father was also a John, it is likely that he went by one of his middle names (Godfrey it seems) with family, from an early age.

Going by the elderly people I've encountered, male names like "Jack" or "Tommy" can be short for almost anything. Likewise "Meg" or "Dolly" for women.

It only takes one person to hyphenate or alter a surname, too, for it to become the accepted form. I think it is only modern fraud concerns that have made casual name-changing frowned upon these days.

Not sure about Murray Jamieson, but in the days when the unadorned surname was normally used, the use of "Parry Thomas" to distinguish which Thomas you were referring to (and to make it clear you were not referring to a close family member by his first name) would be normal. When in the 1950s given names were more commonly used, even in semi-formal circumstances, it was not uncommon for someone to change which of his names he used - a colleague at work called Adam Roger B***** was known to us as Adam, but had been Roger at school. Similarly several men I knew were known by a name that was not formally theirs such as F.A.B. ("Mike") Gaire, E.M. ("Joe") Strover and E.R. ("Peter") Owen - not to mention C.T. "Tom" Delaney where his second name was Terence, but he must have been called "Tom" to distinguish him from his father, L.T. Delaney, who was known as Terry

The modern standard is for someone to have two forenames and to be known by the first of those names, so we may not realise that this has not always been such a standard. In researching my family tree, I have found quite a few people known by their second forename and it seems that these are often the case where the child's first name is chosen to honour a grandparent but the second forename is the one actually used. In my own case, Allen is the third of my forenames, the other two being my grandfather's names, but I have only ever been called Allen. My father-in-law is known to his brother and sister by his "middle name" but to his friends and colleagues by his first name.

So it is quite possible that, like me, Archibald G F Nash was known by his third name, Fraser. However, he didn't actually change his name - as Wikipedia claims - from "Fraser Nash" to "Fraser-Nash" as he is clearly shown in the England & Wales Register of Deaths under 'N', not under 'F'. We can all change the name by which we wish to be known - ask Lulu or Gideon Osborne, our current Chancellor of the Exchequer - but unless we use a deed poll, nothing has changed legally.

Maybe there was a common inter-war affectation of wanting to look double-barrelled. David Lloyd George had done exactly this and as Prime Minister for much of the inter-war period, he may have started or contributed towards such a trend. Rugby player Eric Loudoun-Shand is another example from this time, as is Edith Woodford-Grimes who did exactly the same thing but employing one of her husband's middle names.

But if we want to be accurate, we should list Murray Jamieson under J, Parry Thomas under T, Gordon England under E and Fraser Nash under N.
