Music and motor racing

Having been to Santa Pod last weekend- and it was BRILLIANT-I am prompted to remember when I use to go there in early 70s- when the top fuellers came popping and cackling down the fire up lane the PA would play 'Born to be Wild' by Steppenwolf - perfect soundtrack to get the adrenalin going.I can safely say that after watching someody do a 4,9 ss quarter at 300 mph plus from as close as I could stand last week it is almost terriffying and the noise is beyond loud- enough to make your insides shake.If you have never seen this stuff- do so !

I've always loved the piano music from "The Speed Merchants." I've never managed to find a copy of the piece and I can't recall its name at the moment.

I always thought that the music from "The Speed Merchants" was original compositions. In the film, all of the music is very shrewdly matched with the footage, particularly in the Sebring and Le Mans sections.

I believe that 'Risk' was devised by the French film director Albert Lamorisse.

Little bump as this month's Vintage Racecar confirms Mario Hytten's sponsor in British F3 in 1982 was Swiss electro proggers Axxess.

Talking of Swiss electronica, Yello's singer Dieter Meier was publicized as being a part-time racer, but I'm not sure how credible that boast was.

I hope not to sound like too much of the grump I am, my two major loves are music and motor-racing, but I feel they usually go together like oil and water! If Eddie Jordan or Damon Hill are involved its even worse. See this as some recent evidence:

I was working on the CART website--'99-'00--when I stumbled on to "Speedway at Nazareth". Passed it on to the pr staff, suggesting they should adopt it as the series theme song.

I think they started playing it on the p.a. at some of the tracks.

I the Terry Knight mentioned above is the one I saw in Atlantic cars then I have pics of him. Some day maybe I can find them and post them here.

Yello did release a track called 'The Race', from an album titled 'Flag', so maybe there is some involvement. A bit of Googling links Meier with an Audi 50 in hillclimbs in the late 1980s.

The "Flag" on the album cover is a chequered flag as well. I'm quite relieved Meier did hillclimbing, at least there's some truth behind it.

I'm assuming it's the same Dieter Meier. Interestingly, Dieter Meier could be loosely translated as Teddy Meyer...

I noted in town today Waterstones was full to overspilling with people queueing to have an autobiography signed by Amanda Holden.  I wikipedia-ed her to find what she had done that was worthy of writing such a tome (absolutely nothing), I found that she is currently married to Chris Hughes, and David Coulthard was Best Man at their wedding.

 

Chris Hughes, to this Antperson, will forever be known as Merrick, the second drummer of Adam & The Ants, but also known as a record producer of note (Songs From The Big Chair, Electric Soft Parade's debut).

You're bored!  The first thing that sprang to my mind was that her name was a joke one done on similar lines to Amanda Hugnkiss.  In this case A-man-to-hold-onto.

"Daddy's Speeding" by Suede. I think it's actually about James Dean, but there's a line about "teenage boys trapped in steel and celluloid" that always makes me think of Francois Cevert, for some reason.

 

Other than that, I tend to associate motor racing with classic heavy rock, like many here.

 About twenty five years ago I was with Bill France, the father of NASCAR in his office in Daytona when he handed me a tape ( No discs in those days) of a recording done by famed country and western singer Mel Tillis singing his song " Its a Long Long Way to Daytona" complete with engine noises. About ten years later at a state fair in Florida I actually heard Mel Tillis in concert where he sang the song.

Footnote :   You can hear Tillis singing the song on You TUbe  but it is a different recording without the car noises.
