Just received this picture of a badge.
It definitely says AIACR at the bottom.

Is this an official AIACR (Association Internationale des Automobile Clubs Reconnus) badge?

Leif - somewhat of a puzzle - 'RACI' is the standard abbreviation for the Italian national body, of course, which would have been affiliated to the AIACR, but the eagle and the white crucifix on scarlet field don;t look very Italian do they???.... Would any of our central-southern European chums have inside knowledge on this one????

Looks pretty similar to the badge on this brochure, published by the RACI in 1937:

'House of Savoy' rings a bell in connection with Italy but I must confess to not having seen a crest.

Will try to look up details............

Looking at a pre-war Italian flag the arms of Savoy seems indeed to be a red shield with a white cross. It was removed from the centre of the Italia flag in 1946. Looking closer at the badge one can also see the fasces under the while field. Thanks guys for leading me in the right direction.

The Savoy shield was indeed red with a white cross, with a blue border. The livery colour of the House of Savoy was blue, which is why the Italian footy team (and I think athletics teams) wears blue. Perhaps the red on the Savoyard shield gave rise to Italian racing red?
