Is there a website with some cutaways of GP cars 1930's or 1950's that one knows of per chance?

Or a book maybe ?

There's a big Italian book called Vetture ai Raggi X which is almost certainly unobtainable these days. Cyril Posthumus did a nice racing car book based around cut-aways but the absolute master of the art - Jim Allington - and I failed in our efforts to find somebody willing to publish a 'compleat' volume of his work, and he's now in the process, it seems of selling his material, I think through some auction house or other.

I've got a selection of fifties and early sixties Allingtons and Theo
Pages - could scan; I'm in the process of setting up some new web
space....

Mark, do you have the issues of Motorsport (numbers escape me ATM, I´ll check once I get home) that had articles on the Lancia D50 and Mercedes W196? There are cutaways of both cars which are fairly good quality. If you don´t have the issues in question I could possibly ;) scan the pics and send them to you.

Well, I didn't want to do nasty little screen-resolution shots -- I thought to do them justice 400dpi page scans were the best way to go! if you want smaller JPEG/GIFs I can convert them at my end and upload them....?

Maybe this is an appropriate time to mention Irfanview again?

This free download program enables anyone to reduce pics to the size they want... find it through google... Vitesse will verify its usefulness.

Mark, the Mercedes cutaway is of the 300SLR, not the W196 unfortunately...I´ll try to get the pics scanned and emailed tomorrow. I also found cutaways of the ´58 Testa Rossa, DBR1 and a couple of pics of a Bugatti Type 35 without the bodywork in some old issues of Classic & Sports car so I´ll scan those too if you want.

EDIT: There´s also a cutaway of something called the Lightweight SPL in one of the "I wish I´d designed" pieces in Motosport, interesting piece of kit I must say. Oh, and also I have some illustrations of the chassis construction of the Alfa 1900 Disco Volante in a book somewhere if you´re interested Mark.

I have a "60 Vetture ai Raggi X" somewhere. Is this the same book? It is 'very big', as in 45x25cms or something.
There was also a site by a Dutch guy selling blueprints and line drawings of many cars, includign Auto Unions, Alfas and Mercedes. It had downloadable small pics of the drawings. Unforunately I have lost the bookmark.

Just to test my computer equipment, I downloaded all 30 megabytes of these .TIFF cutaways, upped them to 16 million colours, reduced them in size to a nice managable 800 x 600 size and converted them to .JPEG and now have perfectly viewable hi-quality images and best of all down 15 times the space on your computer from 30 meg to only 2 megabyte.

Maybe someone could download them to test if they look ok on their computers as well .....

Riedner's "Last of the Silver Arrows" has works drawings of the 300SLR in it - they're big (fold-out), but I could probably scan them in page-by-page.... of interest to anyone?

I happened to see a copy of "Vetture ai Raggi X" ,
of wich Doug speaks, at "Libreria dell' Automobile", in Milano, last week.

I don't remember the price but it was sure over 100 euros, well out of my reach.
The book is really beautiful; for anyone going there, it is in the upstairs rare books section

Racing Car News March 1968, page 8...

A cutaway of a Lotus 49 is printed there done by Bob Dickson. Dickson was reported to have done a book ("printed on fine quality art paper, with hardbound colour covers") included five such cutaways by the author.

It was said to be a book on the series that year, with driver profiles, race reports, results, circuit diagrams, photos and technical specs of 'all the cars'... was to be sold for $3.00 (!) and was due on sale in April.

Anyone ever see that one?

For that matter, anyone got a spare?

Righty then, here´s the Lightweight SPL, a hillclimber built over a period of six years starting in 1933 by Alec Issigonis, it has a 750 cc sidevalve Austin engine fitted with a Zoller supercharger and weighs 270 kg. http://forum.racesim...p?postid=403014

Indeed - Les Rix (the guy who did this "new edition") seems a nice bloke. I ordered myself a paper set for Christmas a couple of years ago. There are a few oddities in the scanned text but these are mostly where the right character's been OCR'ed but in the wrong font or size. The Cresswell pictures are scanned well -- good enough to study, certainly, but they DO lose something.

The key here is that for 50 quid you can have both volumes on paper and use them - whereas manky "reading copies" of the original were changing hands for something like 200 quid a volume last time I looked.

(I also managed to get hold of a copy of Setright's sequel for 25 quid recently -- I think LJKS can fake being Pom quite convincingly, most of the time, but it's obvious he's no engineer... Another nice book though.)

Lots and lots of engine and car cutaways in my books "Classic Racing Cars" and "Classic Racing Engines." Not always as big as I'd like them, but they're there!

What a tragedy, Doug, that a book of Jim Allington's drawings didn't fly. They are just wonderful, one of the best of his breed.

One of the things I'm most proud of as an editor was my commissioning of a regular monthly series of cutaways from Clarence LaTourette for SCI and later C/D. He did some nice ones, especially considering that he often had to do them from a batch of photographs! Later I commissioned some other drawings from Clarence, including the Cadillac (1914) and Novi V-8s. I managed to keep copies of many of them.
