In the historic demonstration at Indy on Sat., the BRM caught fire between turns 3 & 4. The driver,who is listed as being John Springett, did the stop,drop, and roll while the marshalls attended to the car first! I think he was OK and I'm not sure how bad the car was damaged but I hope they both survived only slightly singed.

Boty driver and car are fine. Slight singing to the suit as he caught the shoulder harness on his epaulette momentarily. Loose fuel line. After tightening the fuel line and repairing a singed harness, and after about two hours of cleaning the extinguisher from every nook and cranny, the engine was fired and ran nicely.

Here's what the Indianapolis Star said about the incident in Sunday morning's paper:
Driver John Springett suffered first- and second-degree burns on his shoulder and palms in the Historic Grand Prix exhibition run Saturday. He was treated and released at the track's infield care center. He was driving a 1972 BRM P160E that was raced at one time by Clay Regazzoni.

The car was in Yardley livery and it looked FANTASTIC. Fortunately both driver and car are fully recovered, but it was a close and scary call.

One of the gents who built '160/09' was there this weekend, Laurie Garrish. We had a some great chats about his days as an apprentice there and he showed me some items which identified that car as '09' even had the chassis plate not said so. Remarkable how each car is so distinct to those who built them, even years later.
I was in the NW Vista stands when '09' caught fire and my initial thought was a loose fuel line was the culprit. No surprise that relatively little damage was done. While these cars have the rigidity of a cardboard box, they were still tough ol' birds....
