Early 3-litre F1: the supercharged alternative

Given that some teams were scratching around for a suitable engine in the early days of the 3 litre formula, did no-one consider supercharging one of the existing 1.5 litre engines as a stopgap? Some people used 2 litre BRMs and Climaxes, but would a blower have been better?
