I always wondered, that his name sounds very German, in particular in the "Friederich" version. Driving for the Molsheim-based Bugatti factory could be another indication, that he was from Alsace?
Am I right with this guess?

Ernest FRIDERICH. Antoine Raffaëlli, Bugatti's specialist, included some proofs in his book. A seal for example.
Ernest FRIDERICH. Maurice Sauzay, Guide Bugatti.
Ernest FRIDERICH. Erwin Tragatsch. Le dictionnaire marabout des voitures de sport et de compétition.
Ernest FRIDERICH. Godfrey Eaton. The Type 35 Grand Prix Bugatti - Classic Car Profiles.
Ernest FRIDERICH, Alpha Auto.
...
but
Ernest FRIEDRICH. Serge Bellu, Le Sang Bleu.
FRIEDRICH, Cyril Posthumus, The roaring twenties.
I've chosen ERNEST FRIDERICH, RENÉE FRIDERICH (daughter).

Friderich in Venables' "Bugatti: a Racing History" too.
In the English edition of "Sang Bleu", he's Ernst Friedrich
I think this is one like Costantini (and Hutchison!) which sub-editors "correct" because they think it's wrong ......
