Some interesting stuff there... especially the open Mercedes sports car...

And look at the poignancy of this pic...

http://people.freene...otos/nord45.jpg

...a complete translation of the caption would be appreciated.

Well, my German's a bit rusty, but ...

Die Unfallstelle von Onofre Augustin Marimon
Er ist hier beim Training zum
Grossen Preis von Deutschland ums Leben gekommen

The accident location of Onofre Augustin Marimon

This is where he lost his life in practice for the German GP.

Ray, here is the translation:

"Place of accident of Onofre Marimon. He died here in practice for the German Grand Prix."

Does anyone know when this picture was taken?
http://people.freene...fotos/nord8.jpg

It shows what I think is a 1936 W25, a 1939 W154 M-B and also a 1935-37 Auto-Union. Surely this must be pre-war occasion since the A-U is there as well, and not taken in the period of 1952-54?

Udo, really nice pics and sometimes impressing what was possible for visitors at the ring.

Was that "Fahrerlager" the same MB Nürburgring HQ than in the 30s? Looks different.

No, Holger - I think our photographer used wrong terms here. The "Fahrerlager" of the Ring has never changed - it looks almost the same since todays time.
I think that the MB people took their cars and drivers to an outside farm or similar facility where they could work on the cars. I'm not sure but I think that Neubauer mentions it in his book.

Yes Udo, I know they use the wrong term for the "Fahrerlager", therefore my question if that photo shows the same Nürburgring HQ than MB used in the 30s. I must compare those pictures with some in my archive.

... and it would be interesting to know where this HQ was located. Do you know more about it, Holger? I have a vague idea of it having been in the village of Nürburg, but I'm not sure.

Yes Udo, I think you are right with Nürburg, but I must check my data and will come back.

I'm also interested where the Auto Union HQ was located (Nixon: Auto Union Album 1934 -1939/Kirchbergbook have some pictures which show details).

Does anybody know more?

I've also looked at those pictures and wonder where this was. It says they are next to the main grandstands and the Sport Hotel. I've always assumed that the Sport Hotel the mention is where the Dorint currently is or at least close by, this I assume would put the garages somewhere around the position of the current Museum.

But I'm probably well off.

Mark, I had a look to my archive - sorry Udo, couldn't find the MB HQ as fast as I thought- but back to the AU HQ. The Sporthotel was much bigger than the Dorint-Hotel, near to the Fahrerlager. But my impression is, that the AU HQ was over the street of the Fahrerlager . And that probably is near to the Museum. It must be a garage where is enough space for six Typ C. Maybe that Garage I could remember parallel the Döttinger Höhe (Udo, am I'm right?), which is a liitle more than 1 km from the entrance of the Ring.....?

The Sporthotel was in fact part of the old main grandstand and was overlooking the start&finish area. Holger, across the road from the old paddock would mean "Balkhausen", just a few houses there, even today (the place I have lived for some years..) Not likely for a AU HQ, although I know that Hans Stuck sr. always stayed with a family living in one of the Balkhausen houses, even in his late years. So maybe...

Döttinger Höhe I personally do not take into account. It is and was just a hotel, restaurant and filling station, at least to my knowledge.
Holger, do you have any pictures?

BTW: There is no longer a "museum", but something they call "Erlebniswelt". It includes a museum-like section with famous racing cars displayed. The rest is Walt-Disney..

Udo:
Nixon, "Racing the Silverarrows".

"Forsthaus St. Hubertus", the MB HQ at the ring.

BTW¨: I'll hope I'll scan the AU pictures tomorrow and post them here.

From "The German Grand Prix" by Cyril Posthumus:

The 1952 race celebrated the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Nurburgring, so ... a special show of historic German racing cars was arranged near the main gate. It comprised 1937 and 1939 GP Mercedes, a 6-litre GP Auto Union chassis, and a 1924 Targa Florio Mercedes.

Motor Sport, September 1952, page 403:

.... a display of past German glory was arranged at the entrance, consisting of a 1922 Targa Florio Mercedes, a 1937 Grand Prix car, a 1939 Grand Prix car, all from the factory museum and the original Auto Union chassis that was built as a Show model and exhibited in Berlin in 1934.

Substantially the same information from both sources ..... :)

Which must be the Auto Union chassis of the 1937 Typ C from the "Deutsches Museum", the only known AU at that time. Looks really possible.
