The offiicial FOCA videos cover every GP from 1981 to the present. They are fairly easy to obtain. Pre 1981 it is a bit more hit and miss. Not all GPs were covered for TV and, if they were, videotapes were not always retained. There is a nice "film" series originally released under a Marlboro banner which contains half hour summaries of the GP seasons from 1970 to 1979. They are nowhere near as complete as the later FOCA series. Not all races in each year were covered and there were limited numbers of cameras at some events. Other than these, the rest is a matter of digging up scraps from lots of sources. Pathe News have recently put all of their newsreel archives onto the internet. Clips can be downloaded for free and some do cover Grand Prix (and other F1) races. The average legth of clip is about 3 minutes.

You may also want to have a word with nigel red5 - he has a vast archive, and a sticky ad in the For Sale & Wanted forum.

Strange - they used to be obtainable through Duke. Are you in the UK? They are often avaialble through motor accessory chains such as Les Smith or Halfords. I've seen them in WH Smiths as well. Try some of the F1 memorabilia shops as well. You might find the Marlboro series through those types of outlets as well. An there's always Amazon.

Yes you are right, I checked Amazon.com and they have a lot of video tapes.
I bought the 1982 season resume and soon I will buy the 1983 if I get satisfied, of course!!
But if anyone here have some F1 GP races in video tapes and wanna sell or send or whatever I'm completly free to negociate. I also have the original FOCA tape with car accidents till 1986, anyone saw it?
Btw, what's the Pathe News link ?? Any link with free downloads (good picture quality) will be good to receive.

I think the Pathe link is www.britishpathe.com. I have to admit that the "free" versions are fairly "Lo-Fi" witha logo emblazonned accross the bottom of the picture. Better quality versions have to be purchased.

Regarding the FOCA videos, the 1981 tape is pretty good (narrated by Simon Taylor) and the 1982 video is excellent (narrated very wittily by Clive James). The 1982 season was of course marred by two fatal accidents and these are treated with just the right amount of gravitas by Mr James. Unfortunately, the 1983 video soundtrack is disastrous with some New York accented lady asking dumb questions all the time. I don't know what posessed the producers when they were putting it together. It's a pity as the 1983 season was very exciting. Maybe this tape should be re-recorded witha new narration at some future date.

I can't comment on the 1984 and subsequent tapes as I've not seen them.

I totally agree about the 1982 tape. 1985 is memorable for the race commentaries by the drivers (Prost, Piquet, Mansell, Senna, Alboreto, Rosberg, Johansson) and I seem to recall that 1989 has some really good in-car footage. I believe there isn't/won't be a video for the 2002 season because Bernie wanted too many $... :(

David.

I believe there will be a 2002 video David, it will be subtitled 'Michaels Record Year'. I have seen it advertised in Autosport I beilieve.

I also have all of the 1980's F1 review tapes, 1982, 84 and 86 all have Clive James, and all are brilliant. He treats the Villeneuve/Paletti incedents with more than enough respect, and on the subject of the racing he is well informed and witty.

The 1985 tape is another good one, for it has Michele Alboreto, Nigel Mansell, Keke Rosberg, Ayrton Senna, Stefan Johannsen, Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost commentating, with Simon Taylor doing the introductions to each race. Senna's sections in particular are worth the price of the tape alone. The 87, 88 and 89 tapes are all also very good, with a lot of action and on board moments.

As for the 1983 tape, yes, it is a shame about the commentary. It ruins what is actually a pretty good collection of season highlights.

On the subject of Clive James I'm forced to repost this:

I have most of the FIA review tapes and I can say without hesitation that he is the most annoying commentator I have ever listened to. His commentary contained hardly any useful information at all just a constant string of puns. Listening to him say for the 500th time that Rosberg retired because he needed a smoke instead telling the viewer WHY he retired makes me want to fly to the UK and strangle him.

If you think Formula 1 is a 95% about Eddie Irvine jokes then these tapes are for you otherwise I'd recommend the 1988, 1989, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1997, 2001 tapes as all being excellent.

Horses for courses I suppose. I like him anyway. I've always been a fan of his writings especially his work as a TV critic for The Observer from 1972 to 1982. His comments on the likes of biased sports commentating, use of cliches, Nixon's resignation, the death of Albert Speer etc are well worth seeking out.
