Two great motorsports characters have left us this last week.
Bill Doheny. 1/12/03. Grandson of an oil pioneer who made a big Los
Angeles strike, Bill was Chairman of Union Oil before its sale. He was a
big-time philanthropist. In the beginning of SoCal sports car racing he
entered Ferraris for Bill Pollack and Ernie McAfee. He also began an
organisation that provided the model for the 11-99 Foundation, a charitable
group for widows and children of the California Highway Patrol.
Dick Hammer. 1/16/03 Hammer was a motorcyle racer in the 50s and 60s. He
was twice in the lead of the Daytona 200, America's most prestigeous
motorcycle race in the closing laps, only to have his engine blow. He had
great success in flat track and was well known at Ascot, a half mile
bullring where he always put on a good show. He excelled at what we call
here TT racing, which means the track has a jump and road racing. His
service was held today (Sunday) at the San Clemente Presbyterian Church, a
structure his construction company had built.

Jon Derisley died last week. Well known in Lotus circles, but I only met him briefly and can only say that he seemed to be a real character who will be sadly missed.
A bit about him here...
