Four cars failed the preliminary "tests" of the Paris - Rouen trial and were thus not allowed to start the main contest:

#3 De Dion-Bouton steamer
#12 Tenting
#21 Alexandre Letar steamer
#29 Peugeot

Does anyone know the drivers?

# 3 = probably driven by Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat.

# 12 = driven by Tenting (a former foreman at Dalifol (in around 1875) – Dalifol was a Parisian foundry who, in 1876 in association with Amédée Bollée Père, built a steam tram).
Although not qualified, Tenting took part in the Concours, at least till Mantes where he was photographed (photos of all cars were taken by Girard, when the field stopped for breakfast in Mantes, at the Hôtel du Soleil d’Or).

# 21 = driven by Alexandre Letar.

# 29 = driven by Armand Peugeot. He too tried to follow the Concours to Rouen despite his non-qualification, but broke down again (seems that Armand was a bad chauffeur). Finally he took the train to Rouen.

Thanks, Robert!

That is, again, superb information! You must have done one heck of a research job there!
