FISA + FOCA = FIASCO & The Modern World

While the FIASCO, well, fiasco played itself out like a really horrid -- but fascinating -- soap opera, it was a stroke of good fortune and a general lack of imagination which allowed F1 to eventually bounce back and seek new and interesting ways to self-destruct itself.
I have found this a much more difficult assignment than I anticipated. As I have dipped deeper and deeper into this whole affair, the more there is that I recall and the more that I remember. Most of it unpleasant. While I am still not truly certain how close F1 really came to a meltdown and a real split, I do think that the possibility was always there. Indeed, one of the real mysteries to me has always been why the FOCA did not become an independent series like CART. Even after reading all the articles and the few comments that the principals involved have had to say, I still think that there were a few moments when the Point of No Return could have been reached.
Having just read pages of material I haven't bothered to even skim in years, I look at the current power struggle with a slightly different view. I sympathize with those who found themselves having to support either Hitler of Stalin when they really hoped that both would devour each other and never bother the rest of the world.
I know that I have expressed my desire to kick over this rock and see all the slimey, creepy creatures wiggle and crawl around, but now that I have I feel a certain sadness. Why? It seems things were as bad as I remember them being.....

... if not worse. It's the damn money, I reckon. Unfortunately there seems to be no way to take the money out of the equation. At least somebody noticed something was wrong - Max Mosley has dusted some sulfa powder into the shrapnel gash on the leg, and applied a compression bandage - but he's not yet noticed the sucking chest wound.

Are all these changes (and changes to the changes) to be nothing more than putting a band-aid on a broken leg?

I think it was the sucking chest wound that caught his attention. The sound of air escaping from the PR/sponsor/ra ra ra hot air balloon. M&B are just confused about how much to tweak the fuel valve.

Here in the UK, M&B used to be a well-established commercial brewery. It is, perhaps, fitting that in the past some people have questioned whether the other M&B had the requisite competences to coordinate a casual drinking-party in such an establishment.Originally posted by oldtimer
